DO THEY KNOW IT’S CHRISTMAS?

The day after seeing a TV report about a famine in Ethiopia, pop singer Bob Geldof decided he wanted to do
something to help Ethiopia. It was this TV report that gave Geldof the idea of recording a song for the African
famine. He asked another musician, Midge Ure, to help him write the music and lyrics and they then recruited
forty-five of the most popular Irish and British singers of the early 1980s. Each artist in the group, known as
Band Aid, sang a line of the song ‘Do they know it’s Christmas?’. The result was one of the biggest-selling
singles of all time. The success of the song probably had more to do with the performers rather than the
quality of the music but it was a great success. The BBC played it once an hour. Geldof and Ure had hoped to
make £70,000 but they ended up making £70,000,000.

However, not everyone was convinced that it had been such a good idea. There were criticisms and doubts
about whether the money would reach Ethiopia. But when eight huge planes with the Band Aid logo arrived
in Ethiopia even the critics were impressed.

Difficulties with transporting the aid once in Africa led to the next phase of the effort. Geldof began to protest
against the local Ethiopian trucking companies which refused to transport and distribute the food. He then
organised the Live Aid concert held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London (attended by 72,000
people) and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States (attended by about
100,000 people) on July 13 th 1985. It was one of the largest-scale television broadcasts of all time with an
estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations. This is nearly 40% of the world population at the
time.
