PROJECT PROPOSAL TO ESTABLISH A CHICKEN PROJECT.

1.0 BACKGROUND
High Grade Chickens is a local group in Rhodene, Masvingo Province in Zimbabwe, established to improve
the welfare of children and families in Zimbabwe through commercial income generating enterprises.
The group was established in year 2015 and it has now 3 registered members with women and
disadvantaged children applying for membership. With the establishment of High Grade Chickens children
and women in Masvingo who are the main care takers of their families hope to increase their family income
and supporting their children. Over 75% of women in Zimbabwe are small scale farmers who are under
absolute poverty but have the drive to work only restricted by capital.

2.0 The strategies of HIGH GRADE CHICKENS poultry Project include the
Following:

 Improve the economic condition of the HIGH GRADE CHICKENS members as well as other sectors of
society as a whole.
 Train the children/women in income generative activities in order to generate enough money to support
their families.
 Train women in chicken breeding to acquire more efficient management skills in white meat production
and marketing.
 Providing improved varieties of breeds that are quick maturing and high yielding under average systems
of management.
 Community mobilization and sensitization of the people to actively participate in the various project
components. In particular, to encourage women breeders to voluntarily form small groups/associations
and societies based on the interest they themselves have in each enterprise.
 Assist the government and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in the campaign in relation to
organic farming and, in caring, protecting and preserving natural resources and the environment for
sustainable development.

3.0 JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT
There is an increasing demand for chicken not only in Zimbabwe but also in the SADC region because of
general improvement of standard of living of the people.
Demand for chicken in and around Masvingo Province is quite high especially in the suburbs in schools,
medical centres small mines and universities, etc.
In addition, many supermarkets are also selling such products.
Thirdly there are also chicken processing factories near in Zimbabwe which are also targeted market.
Chicken is one of the most promising enterprises in the Zimbabwe livestock sector. This is because they
require little space and relatively small initial capital per unit head compared to other livestock enterprises.
There is easy availability of feeds as well as drugs on the market. HIGH GRADE CHICKENS can get
Qualified veterinary personnel who are available in from the Veterinary services department and Arex
Officers.

4.0 MANAGEMENT
For any enterprise to succeed, proper and efficient management is essential in order to realize good returns
on investment. For maximum production, efficient labour is required on daily basis.
Therefore, close supervision is necessary. Feeding, watering, cleaning and sanitation, observation of
diseases and disorders, collection of products for market and arranging an efficient system of sales must be
well coordinated by a qualified manager.

MANAGEMENT OF THE PROJECT

A. PERSONNEL RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Director- Tafadzwa Chikwena (ID 27-215117Y27)

– During the transition period, there shall first be a Project Director in order to:
a) Direct the full implementation of the project;

b) Approve/Disapprove large financial transactions involving the project;

c) Possess the documents in the entry and exit of financial matters of the Project; and

d) Arranges quarterly meetings with the personnel who manage the project. Manager makes sure of the
proper implementation of the project;

e) Temporarily direct the production and distribution/sale in the absence of a production officer and
marketing officer; Arranges the monthly meeting of the workers

Responsible for the clerical aspects of the project;


Assist the Manager in the day-to-day activities. Hold the documents of the meetings, properties, and
financial transactions of the project.

Attendants: Perform day to day duties like feeding, watering, cleaning and collecting produce.

Store keeper: Inventory and stock management.


Accounts Clerk: Keeping Project records and accounts.
Salesman: Carry out business transactions on and off the farm.
Security Guard: Ensure security and safety on the farm.

6.0 MARKET ASPECTS


With production on a large scale, there are several options to market the products.
• Selling to other farmers either for breeding or fattening.
• Selling at a younger stage for tender meat to Chicken Inn, Chicken Slice and Restaurants in the Masvingo
town.
• Selling at the ripe stage to the Schools (primary and secondary), Business Community and even the local
communities in and around Masvingo
• Selling cull layers after useful productive life.

Also on demand is manure, which has been recommended the best for crop farming and fish feeding.

7.0 FINANCES IN NUMBERS

Returns
Each chicken will be sold @ $6 meaning to say with a success rate of 97% net profit margins
will top $1400 in just 7-8 weeks.

OTHER EXPENSES
Construction and repairs of fowl runs/zvirugu = $450
Zinc Sheets $15 x 30 sheets = $450
Cement Bags $12 x 10 bags = $120
Total $2620

We also will be doing concillary activities like road runner chicks, turkeys, ducks, hanga from a basic cost
of $400

Our final figures will be $3570 for the direct costs from there we add the labour costs and insurance that
will give us a gross figure of $5000
