“Vaccines: Calling the Shots”

NOVA 2014

How many parents in the United States immunize (or vaccinate) their children? What is the concern
about this?
More than 90%, Concerned about how many vaccinations kids need at once, when they need
them done, 10% delay/skip vaccinations, 1% don't vaccinate.
How many diseases are covered by the US childhood immunization schedule?
14 diseases covered by 28 vaccines
What type of organism causes whooping cough and what is the species name?
Bacteria called Bordatella pertussis
How many cases of whooping cough were there in the US in 2012? Is this an unusual number? Can a
person die from whooping cough?
50,000 cases nearly, 20 deaths. This is unusual. Yes, you can die from it
Why would a person be susceptible to whooping cough?
Too young to get the vaccination, or the vaccination wears off when older
What disease came to NYC in 2013? Where did it come from? Where were most of the cases and why?
Measles, Europe, It spread to unvaccinated people in building and community. Children were hit
the hardest because they were too young to be vaccinated.
What causes measles and how does it spread?
It's caused by droplet spreads, it's airborne for up to two hours, lingering on objects
Can a person die from measles?
Yes
Why is it important to immunize the very young? Are there medical risks to giving many vaccinations at
the same time?
Otherwise, they can die from preventable diseases. Germs/diseases have been evolving for
years, they can easily infect the unvaccinated and those without a matured immune system.
Studies show they are safe
How do vaccines affect a population?
Can protect entire populations
What is Herd immunity and why is it important?
The less the disease is present, the less chance of getting infected. It involves vaccination. It's
important because it can contain a disease from spreading too much.
How high does the herd immunity need to be to prevent the spread of measles? Why is this number so
high?
95% must be vaccinated, because measles is very contagious
What happened in France in 2008-2011? What was the herd immunity level there?
Measles outbreak. 89%
Why did the Australian boy’s parents think that his seizures were due to vaccination? What was the
cause of the boy’s epilepsy (Dravet syndrome)?
Because it happened 17 hours after he was vaccinated. They thought the vaccine caused a fever
which triggered the seizure, but the epilepsy was actually caused by a mutation in a particular
gene. The vaccination was simply a trigger.
Is epilepsy a typical side effect of a vaccination? What are typical side effects?
No, not typically. Slight swelling at the injection site, a fever are typical side effects
What is infantile paralysis? What was announced about this disease in 1955?
Becoming paralyzed as an infant. In 1955, it was discovered that the polio vaccine was the cause
of this; it was weakening the muscles.
How did the young man profiled get polio in the 1990s? Was this common?
He went for an oral polio vaccine and got a rash and fever. He couldn't move his lower
extremities. This was very rare.
What was done about the polio vaccine later?
In 2000, the oral vaccine was replaced by a safer, injectable version.
How many children were studied in the initial report linking autism to the MMR vaccine?
12
What did all subsequent studies about vaccines and vaccinations show?
The rates of autism were the same regardless of whether kids were vaccinated or not.
What types of cancers are linked to HPV?
Cervical cancers in females, throat cancers in males.
What is the recommended age for administration of the HPV vaccine? Why?
11 or 12 years old, before they're sexually active
What is the concern of some parents about the HPV vaccine?
The link between the HPV vaccine and sex
What is the approximate risk of a severe side effect from a vaccination? What are the benefits?
Extremely small risk of a severe side effect (1:1 million). Benefits: living a normal, healthy life
