Epics were originally long, narrative poems, sometimes relayed orally for
generations before being written down. Epics typically use the point of view of an
epic hero, a character in the epic who is about to go on a historic quest and/or
fight a historic battle. In some cases, the hero of an epic is a group of heroic
individuals. The epic hero is often portrayed as having extraordinary skill or
powers, and he or she is often trying to protect their way of life from a threat. The
language in an epic is often elevated to underscore the serious matters it conveys.

DIRECTIONS: Read the descriptions below, and decide whether the story would fit
the description of an epic or not by selecting a. or b. Then explain your reasoning.
1. The Duke of Knock-Knock goes in search of the funniest jokes in all of the world
when Sadness invades the king’s castle. After several months, the Duke returns
from his thousand mile journey with an infantry of court jester’s, armed with their
best comedic material.

2. Caitlin was never very good at paying attention in class, as her phone always
distracts her. The night before she has eight huge tests, Stephanie must manage to
go to eight different study groups and cram an entire semester’s worth of
information into one unforgettable night of learning.

DIRECTIONS: Read each description of a story, and then select the letter or letters
of the elements it shares with an epic.
1. “Everything in the city must be blue!” the Queen decreed, spreading jam onto her
toast. “Do not return to our village until you have enough cloth to make
everyone in the kingdom clothes of the most vibrant blue!” And just as the word
“vibrant blue” had escaped her lips, a blob of red jam fell onto her blue lapel.
“What is this most glorious color?” she screamed, as the red jam and the blue of her
garment mixed to form a deep purple. “I hate the color blue! Bring me… bring me
more of this color instead! Everyone must wear… this color!”

2. As the dragon breathed hot fire onto the Tower of Marshmallow, the knight had an
idea. While the tower may have been the city’s most notorious landmark, certainly
the tower’s days were now numbered. The dragon singed its spire, and it was
beginning to droop to one side as it melted into a goopy blob. The knight coaxed
the dragon closer to the tower, knowing that the sticky mess would make an easy
trap. The people would be safe.

3. The arrival of the pirates was imminent, but as the night wore on, the ship’s
occupants began to fall asleep, one by one. The ship’s captain, Henry, played a tune
on his ocarina, knowing that not one person on the boat could resist its sleep-
inducing charms. This would be the fourth night in a row that he alone had stood
watch. He would protect them. He would sleep when they returned to shore.
