1 Wind Turbine Description

The VESTAS V80-2.0 MW is a pitch regulated upwind turbine with active yaw
and a rotor with three blades.
The VESTAS V80-2.0 MW has a rotor diameter of 80 m and operates using the
OptiSpeedTM concept. This feature enables the rotor to operate with variable
speed (RPM).
All V80-2.0 MW turbines are equipped with OptiTip®, the special VESTAS pitch
regulating system. With OptiTip®, the angles of the blades are constantly
regulated. Therefore, the blades are always pitched at the optimal angle for
current wind conditions. This optimises power production and noise levels.
The blades are made of glass fibre reinforced epoxy. Each blade consists of two
blade shells, bonded to a supporting beam. Special steel root inserts connect the
blades to the blade bearing. The blade bearing is a 4-point contact ball bearing,
which is bolted to the blade hub.
The main shaft transmits the power to the generator through the gearbox. The
gearbox is a combined planetary and helical gearbox. From the gearbox, power
is transmitted via a maintenance-free composite coupling to the generator. The
generator is a special asynchronous 4-pole generator with wound rotor.
At high wind speeds, the OptiSpeedTM and the pitch regulating system keep the
power at nominal, regardless of the air temperature and density. At low wind
speeds, the OptiTip® system and the OptiSpeedTM optimise the power output by
selecting the optimal RPM and pitch angle.
The wind turbine brakes by fully feathering the blades. A parking brake is
mounted on the gearbox high speed shaft.
All functions of the wind turbine are monitored and controlled by microprocessor-
based control units. This control system – including the transformer - is placed in
the nacelle. Changes in the pitch of the blades are activated by a hydraulic
system, which enables the blades to rotate 95°. This system also supplies the
pressure for the brake system.
Four electrical yaw gears rotate the yaw pinions, which mesh with a large toothed
yaw ring mounted on the top of the tower. The yaw bearing system is a plain-
bearing system with built-in friction.
The glass fibre reinforced nacelle cover protects all the components inside the
nacelle against rain, snow, dust, sun, etc. A central opening provides access to
the nacelle from the tower. Inside the nacelle, there is an 800-kg service crane,
which can be enlarged to hoist the main components (7,500 kilograms).
The steel tubular tower is delivered painted (for details see 1.4 Climatic
Conditions). As an option, VESTAS offers a service lift in the tubular tower.

1.1 VCS Description, OptiSpeedTM

OptiSpeedTM, also named Vestas Converter System (VCS), ensures a steady
and stable electric power from the turbine.
VCS consists of an effective asynchronous generator with wound rotor and slip
rings. A power converter with IGBT switches, contactors and protection.

VCS enables variable speed operation in a range of approx. 60% of nominal

RPM.
Together with the pitch control, VCS ensures energy optimisation, low noise
operation and reduction of loads on the gearbox and other vital components.
VCS controls the current in the rotor circuit in the generator. This gives precise
control of the reactive power, and gives a smooth connection of the generator to
the grid.

1.2 Type Approvals

The V80 – 2.0 MW wind turbine is type approved according to the following
standards:

Country: Design criteria for Conditions: Hub heights

approval:
IEC1) IEC 61400 IA 60, 67, 78 m
IIA 78, 100 m
Germany DIBt Zone II 78, 100 m
Zone III 60, 78 m

1) Statement of compliance

1.3 Terrain Conditions

If the terrain is outside the above listed rules or the terrain otherwise seems
complex, particular considerations may be necessary and Vestas must be
contacted.
 Within a radius of 100 meters from the turbine, maximum slope of 10°.
 Within a radius of 100 to 500 meters from the turbine, maximum slope of 15°.
 Outside a 500 meters radius from the turbine, maximum slope of 20°.

1.4 Climatic Conditions

A standard wind turbine is designed for operating at ambient temperatures
ranging from -20°C to +30°C. Thus, it stops operation at -20°C and +30°C.
The restart temperatures after stop on lower/upper ambient temperature limit are
-20°C to +29°C respectively. Special precautions must be taken outside these
temperatures (see 1.6 General Reservations).
The wind turbines can be placed in wind farms with a distance of at least 5 rotor
diameters (400 m) between the wind turbines. If the wind turbines are placed in
one row, perpendicular of the predominant wind direction, the distance between
the wind turbines must be at least 4 rotor diameters (320 m).
The relative humidity can be 100% (max. 10% in time). Corrosion protection
according to ISO 12944-2 for corrosion class C5-M (outside) and C3 to C4
(inside). Corrosion protection is designed for long lifetime. See special
differentiation on tower in 3.11 Tower (Steel).

1.5 Grid Connection

The wind turbine must be connected to high voltage grid at 6-33 kV (50 Hz and
60 Hz), where 36 kV (Um) is the highest equipment voltage. The cable connection
is made in the bottom of the tower.
The transformer in the turbine must be adjusted to the grid voltage. When
ordering, VESTAS needs your precise information about grid voltage, with
regards to choice of the transformer's nominal voltage and winding connection.
As an option VESTAS offers switchgear.
The voltage of the high voltage grid must be within +5/-5%. Steady variations
within +1/-3 Hz (50 Hz) or within +2/-3 Hz (60 Hz) are acceptable. Intermittent or
rapid grid frequency fluctuations may cause serious damage to the turbine.
Over the turbine lifetime, grid drop-outs are to occur at an average of no more
than 20 times a year.
The earthing system for the turbine must be made according to the Vestas
Earthing System concept.
For more general information on the Vestas Earthing System, see Vestas
document, item no.: 0000-3388.

1.6 General Reservations

Vestas OptiSpeedTM technology is not available in the United States of America
and Canada.
In case of heavy icing up, interruptions in operation may be expected.
In certain combinations of high wind, high temperature, low air density and/or low
voltage, power de-rating may happen to ensure that the thermal conditions of the
main components such as gearbox, generator, transformer etc. are kept within
limits.
It is generally recommended that the grid voltage is as close to nominal as
possible. In case of grid dropout and very low temperatures, a certain time for
heating must be expected, before the wind turbine can start to operate.
If the terrain within a 100m radius of the turbine has a slope of more than 10°,
particular considerations may be necessary.
If the wind turbine is placed more than 1000 m above sea level, a higher
temperature rise than usual might occur in generator, transformer and other
electrical components. In this case, a periodic reduction of rated power might
occur, even if the ambient temperature is within the specified limits.
Furthermore, at sites placed more than 1000 m above sea level, there will be an
in-creased risk of icing-up.
Lightning strikes are considered force majeure, i.e. damage caused by lightning
strikes is not warranted by Vestas.
Due to continuous development and updating of our products, VESTAS reserves
the right to change the specifications.

2.2 Power Curves VESTAS V80-2.0 MW

Power curves are calculated on basis of NACA 63.xxx and FFA-W3 blade
profiles.
Parameters for calculated curves:

Frequency: 50/60 Hz
Rotor diameter: 80 metre
Tip angle: Pitch regulated
Turbulence: 10%

The power curves are measured on the low voltage side of the transformer,
which means that losses in transformer and high voltage cables are not included.

In order to meet site specific demands for low noise, it is possible to program
turbine noise emission levels before installation, so that turbine operation are
customised to meet the specific requirements of the site. When lowering the
noise emission level, it influences the kWh production compared to standard.
