Composite Cement is covered under IS: 16415-2015 and presents a good opportunity to produce
high strength concrete which is highly durable. Composite cement is a mixture of high quality
clinker (IS:16353-2015), fly ash (IS:3812 (Part 1) - 2013), granulated slag (IS:12089-1987) and
gypsum. Typical range of these components is clinker (35% to 65%), fly ash (15% to 35%),
granulated slag (20% to 50%) and gypsum (3% to 5%).
Scope of study: The study was conducted to understand the effect of Composite Cement into
concrete performance in the form of strength, workability and chloride penetration along with
PPC. Concrete mixes with 300 Kg/m3, 400 Kg/m3 & 500 Kg/m3 with W/C 0.3, 0.4 & 0.5 were
tested to understand the impact on the critical concrete properties. To get desired workability,
appropriate chemical admixture was used with fixed dosage for each set of concrete mixes.
Workability measurement (initial slump and slump at 60 minutes) and strength measurement at
the age of 1, 3,7,28 and 90 days was done. RCPT test was done to ascertain the chloride
penetration resistance of concrete mixes.
Workability: The study was conducted with 9 nos. different concrete mixes with varying
cement content and water cement ratio. Concrete mixes with lower cement content and relatively
higher W/C, PPC offers better workability whereas for richer mixes and lower W/C, Composite
Cement offers better workability. The overall concrete rheology with Composite Cement was
much better and mix was very cohesive than PPC concrete. The reason behind getting lower
slump value with Composite Cement may be due to the crystalline slag particles and its effect of
holding entrapped water into the green concrete matrix. We observed that the concrete mixes
made with Composite Cement were releasing some water after giving little vibration even after
60 minutes and exhibited more workability than concrete mixes made with PPC.
Compressive Strength: The one day strength pattern shows excellent early strength with
Composite Cement Concrete vis-à-vis PPC Concrete of the same plant and same batch. All mix
combinations have shown the same pattern though the gap is wider in case of lowest water
cement ratio i.e. 0.3 with 300Kg/m3 and 500kg/m3 combinations.
Seven days compressive strength results of all the concrete mixes for PPC and Composite
Cement shows at par values, specifically for mixes with lower cement content and higher water
to cement ratio. At the same time for concrete mixes with higher cement content and lower W/C,
PPC gives slightly better strength in comparison to Composite Cement.
Later-age strength development pattern exhibits better strength with Composite Cement for
lower cement content and relatively higher W/C. For moderate cement content and W/C, both
the cement gives similar strength. Whereas for richer concrete mixes and lower W/C, PPC gives
slightly better strength.
We have observed that concrete mixes with higher cement content and lower W/C gives much
workable mix in case of Composite Cement vis-à-vis PPC (at 60 minutes) with the same amount
of admixture dosage. So there is a scope for reduction of water content and hence may achieve
better strength with Composite Cement.

Composite cements are cements in which a proportion of the Portland cement clinker is replaced
by industrial by-products, such as granulated blastfurnace slag (gbs) and power station fly ash
(also known as pulverized-fuel ash or pfa), certain types of volcanic material (natural
pozzolanas) or limestone.
Blended cements with more than one blending material are called composite cements.

My dad once called me and asked, Which cement should we buy for casting our slabs?
I thought about it and analysed it. I studied about advantages and disadvantages of both.
Finally preferred Pozzolana Portland Cement (PPC) over OPC for our new house .
It took some extra time for the member to set (First slab). So, for our second slab, we started
casting it before 8 AM. We casted those slabs in summer.

PPC based concrete is not a problem. It is even better to use PPC based concrete “BUT” the only
issue is delay of stripping time of the formwork for the slab.
The PPC based concrete has upto 35% flyash used as additive , which has slows initial gain in
strength. hence, we have to keep the formwork for longer time, generally 40% more time.
Moreover, the PPC based concrete has advantages like lesser shrinkage and plastic cracks ,
higher ultimate strength of the concrete, cheaper concrete(as PPC cement is cheaper than OPC ).

Which cement is better OPC or PPC for construction of roads and houses?
In ordinary Portland cement, During the hydration of cement , the reactants of calcium silicates
(C2S and C3S)and water fused to form the main product such as CSH(calcium Silicate
hydrate)gel and byproduct Ca(oH)2(Hydrated lime).
The obtained byproduct is the culprit. It will cause detoiration of concrete involving sulphate
attack, etc. and the only advantage of this byproduct is resist corrosion of rein -bars. Due to it's
alkalinity.
In Portland pozzolona cement(PPC), the byproduct ( Ca(oH)2) react with fly ash(pozzolonic

If you ask about good or better cement , I can say all cement in market is good.
Some company is marketing locally only (sucha as Jajpur cement, Sagar cement, Zuari Ce),
some are marketing all over India (such as ACC, UltraTech , Lafarge).
All cement are good, sometime you are to choose the type of product as per your structure.
For example, when you are casting a slab, you can go for PSC (Portland Slag Cement), or go
with PPC(Portland Pozzolonic Cement) when you are casting Footing. You can caste Column
with OPC(Ordanary Portland Cement)

What is the difference between PPC cement and Slag cement? Which is better for house
construction?
In former case, most probably flyash is used along with cement and in later case GGBS is used
with cement.
Both products are productive in nature for construction purpose. Flyash mainly deals with
workability of your concrete as well as durability and GGBS deals with strength and durability
of structure.
Only difference is cost, PSC is slightly more costlier than PPC but both the products are very
much efficient for house construction.

What is the difference between ordinary Portland cement and Portland composite cement?
Portland cement is a complex of umhydrated calcium and aluminium silicates produced by the
roasting together of limestone and clay. The limestone was originally obtained from Portland in
Dorset when patented in the 19th century to replace quicklime.
When mixed with fly ash or ground slag, by products of coal-fire power stations or smelting the
composite materia is formed giving stronger hydration, similar to Roman pozzalonic cement
which used volcanic ash instead.

What is the difference between opc cement and portland slag cement?
ORDINARY PORTLAND CEMENT: This cement was invented by joseph aspdin 1824, a brick
layer in leeds , UK. Obtained by grinding together of calcareous(lime stone /chalk) and
argillaceous (shale/ clay) in a klin at a temperature of 1300 to 1500 degree centigrade. It’s
compsition are Ca0 ,Si02, Al203, Fe203, Mg0 and alkalies.
PORTLAND SLAG CEMENT: Manufactured by mixing portland clinker with blast furnace slag
about 65% of mass of mixture. It has low heat of hydration, more durability and is better
resistant to soil and water containing excessive amounts of sulphates , alkalies ,metals as well as
acid

Hello, there are some qualities of these each cement. I am going to introduce about them.
PSC
Portland Slag Cement, commonly known as PSC, is blended cement. Slag is, essentially, a non-
metallic product comprising of more than 90% glass with silicates and alumino-silicates of lime.
At JSW Cement, we use superior quality slag produced at our steel manufacturing plant,
conforming to IS: 12089 standards for producing PSC. It is created with a combination of upto
45- 50% slag, 45% – 50% clinker, and 3-5% gypsum. PSC has been voted as the most suitable
cement for mass construction because of its low
