When a celebrity, a politics or other person in the media spotlight loses their temper in public, they
run the risk of hitting the headings in the most embarrassing way. For such uncontrolling outbursts
of anger are often triggered by what seem to be trivial matters and, if they are caught on camera, can
make the person appear slightly ridiculousness. But it's not only the rich and famous who is prone
to fits of rage. According to recent surveys, ordinary people are increasingly tending to lose their
cool in public. Although anger is a potentially destructive emotion that uses up a lot of energy and
creates a high level of emotional and physical stress - and it stops us thinking rational.
Consequently angry people often end up saying, and doing, things they later have to regret. So, how
can anger be avoided? Firstly, diet and lifestyle may be to blame. Tolerance and irritability certainly
come to the surface when someone hasn't slept properly or has skipped a meal, and any intake of
caffeine can make things worst. Take regular exercise can help to ease and diffuse feelings of
aggression , however, reducing the chances of an angry response. But if something or someone does
make you angry, it's advisable not to react immediately. Once you've calmed down, things won't
look half as badly as you first thought.

Part 4: Read an article in which four young people talk about the experience of taking their driving test.
(15 pts)
A. Joe Smedley
Ever since I was little, I’ve been fascinated by mechanical things, especially the internal combustion
engine! I used to make models of cars, and I knew a lot about different makes long before I was old enough
to drive one. I’d been driving a motorbike for six months before I started taking lessons for my driving test,
and I’m sure that experience helped me. On the other hand, learning to drive proved to be quite hard. I
thought because I knew how a car works it would make a difference. That was a big mistake! I remember
how embarrassed I was when I couldn’t even get the car into second gear. By the time I took my test, I felt
fairly confident, so I wasn’t surprised when I passed first time. The funny thing about it is that I haven’t
had the chance to drive a car ever since I got my license because my parents don’t have one! In a year or
two, I hope I’ll have enough money to buy myself a nice little car.
B. Hanna Watson
I am really glad that I have a driving license because it’s so useful, but I wasn’t really sure I wanted to take
the test at first. I was shaking and my knees trembling before the first lesson, though I soon got over my
nervousness because the instructor was so friendly. When I first went to the driving school, I arranged for
thirty lessons. Although the instructor assured me I was ready to take the test after twenty-five lessons, I
decided to wait until I had had all thirty lessons. I felt very tense about driving, and the test was a disaster.
First, I forgot my glasses when I went for the written test, and then, on the practical test, I almost had an
accident! It wasn’t my fault, but it still gave me a terrible fight. Anyway, for the last few months I’ve been
practicing in my father’s car, although he only lets me go on quite country roads. I’m turning nineteen next
month, and I know what my parents are getting me for my birthday!
C. Clarissa Holmes
I wanted to get my driving license as soon as I could. My childhood ambition was to be the first woman
Formula One world champion! Actually, the reality of taking my test was completely different. I didn’t
6
pass the test until my fourth attempt, but that was because of the practical test. I kept on making silly
mistakes, you see. In fact, the other part of the test wasn’t nearly as hard; all you had to do was learn the
regulations about driving. I was getting pretty upset after failing three times, so my aunt, who has a farm,
let me go into a field and drive around, just to get used to the feeling. I think that helped a lot. I’ve been
saving up like mad, and in couple of weeks I’m confident I’ll have enough to buy a decent second-hand
car.
D. Eddy Fredricks
I didn’t really think about my driving test right up until I was eighteen. I had the idea that driving was
basically dangerous, and I think that came from my grandmother. She had been in a car crash years ago,
and she used to tell me how awful it was, which put me off a lot. But when a couple of my friends passed
their tests, I suddenly realized I really wanted to get my driving license. Being optimistic, I just booked ten
lessons at first, but in the end I needed over three times that many! That was a bit embarrassing because
when my parents said that the driving lessons would be a present for my birthday, I don’t think they
expected they would cost that much! Having a driving lesson is going to be very useful! When the school
term finishes in August, I’ve got a part-time job delivering books for a big bookshop, and I have to use
their delivery van, so I couldn’t do it if I hadn’t passed my test.

Part 5: Read the following passage and answer the questions from 51 to 60. (10 pts)
A. Sensible work practices are an important factor in the prevention of muscular fatigue; discomfort or pain
in the arms, neck, hands or back; or eye strain which can be associated with constant or regular work at a
keyboard and visual display unit (VDU).
B. It is vital that the employer pays attention to the physical setting such as workplace design, the office
environment, and placement of monitors as well as the organization of the work and individual work
habits. Operators must be able to recognize work-related health problems and be given the opportunity to
participate in the management of these. Operators should take note of and follow the preventive measures
outlined below.
C. The typist must be comfortably accommodated in a chair that is adjustable for height with a back rest
that is also easily adjustable both for angle and height. The back rest and sitting ledge (with a curved edge)
should preferably be cloth-covered to avoid excessive perspiration.
D. When the keyboard operator is working from a paper file or manuscript, it should be at the same
distance from the eyes as the screen. The most convenient position can be found by using some sort of
holder. Individual arrangement will vary according to whether the operator spends more time looking at the
VDU or the paper – whichever the eyes are focused on for the majority of time should be put directly in
front of the operator.
E. While keying, it is advisable to have frequent but short pauses of around thirty to sixty seconds to
proofread. When doing this, relax your hands. After you have been keying for sixty minutes, you should
have a ten-minute change of activity. During this spell it is important that you do not remain seated but
stand up or walk around. This period could be profitably used to do filing or collect and deliver documents.
F. Generally, the best position for a VDU is at right angles to the window. If this is not possible then glare
from the window can be controlled by blinds, curtains or movable screens. Keep the face of the VDU
vertical to avoid glare from overhead lighting.
G. Unsatisfactory work practices or working conditions may result in aches or pain. Symptoms should be
reported to your supervisor early on so that the cause of the trouble can be corrected and the operator
should seek medical attention.
