MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
Instruments that produce sound from the
substance of the instrument itself (wood or
metal) are classified as idiophones. They are
further subdivided into those that are
struck, scraped, plucked, shaken, or rubbed.
In the Philippines there are metal and
wooden (principally bamboo) idiophones.
Among idiophones (instruments the hard
bodies of which vibrate to produce sound)
commonly used are the qaḍīb (“percussion
stick”), the zil and sunūj (“cymbals”), and
the kāṣāt , or small finger cymbals.

SARUNGBANGGI
sadyang tunay
Araw, gabi, ang panaginip ko'y ikaw.
Magbuhat ng ikaw ay aking inibig,
Ako ay natutong gumawa ng awit;
Pati ng puso kong dati'y matahimik,
Ngayo'y dumadalas ang tibok ng aking dibdib.

BICOL DELICACIES

• There is more to Filipino food

than adobo and  sisig. Each province in the
Philippines specializes in different cuisine,
and there will always be dozens of dishes
to try. The Bicol region is just one of many
places where you can try authentic Filipino
food. Bicolanos love to cook and eat so it’s
not surprising why they have such tasty
food. Read on for five food specialties in
Bicol. Prepare a tall glass of milk because
these dishes pack a spicy punch!
LAING
This dish really appeals to vegetarians and vegans
alike. it is made from taro leaves simmered in
coconut milk and served with hot chili peppers.
The dish can be cooked in a variety of ways and is
very common in carinderiasand cafeterias in the
region, even in manila, although the city version
may not be as spicy. To get a taste of
authentic laing, visit Bicol.

Bicol Express
Bicol express is probably the most popular
bicolano dish. The story goes that the dish gets
its name from a passenger train from manila to
Bicol. After you eat the dish, you’ll be running
to find anything to quench the fire on your
tongue. Like most Bicolano dishes, it is made of
coconut milk and chili peppers but with cooked
pork as the main ingredient.

Agta is the generic term used in bikol to
refer to its 40,000 natives with dark-colored
skins, short stature and kinky hair. There are
three other terms for them in camarines norte
where they have managed to preserve their
indigenous culture. “Kabihug" is what they call
themselves; "manide" is the term for their
language; and abian, meaning "friend" is how
they are referred to by non- agtas.

Some Beliefs and Religious Practices in the
Region
Some beliefs and customs related to farming
the life cycle, talismans, and divination survive
in the consciousness of the contemporary Bicol,
even the educated.
There are still pre-hispanic beliefs in the
hierarchy of supernatural that the region adopts
ranging from bad to good. the comon
expression "tabi po, maki-agi tabi" (excuse me
please, I would like to passed by) acknowledges
the invisible world or the third dimensions.
The Christian God and heavenly host have
replaced the supreme god gugurang and the
minor deities, each of whom had a special
function.
The darker side inhabited by witches and
monsters seem to live on the minds of some
Bicol Christians. Also some ancestor worship in
some areas; post harvest thanksgiving ritual,
sagugurang, is retained by bicol farmers by way
of offering food to the spirits of their ancestors.
Touching the body of an image of Jesus or
other saints was also part of their religious
beliefs, wherein they do believe that it can cure
their pains and problems.
Beliefs on God, the soul and life after death
are strongly held by the people. Related to
these, there are annual rituals like pabasa,
tanggal, fiestas and Flores de mayo.
