4.3 Protective Coating

4.3.1 Pipes shall be coated with high density polyethylene (HDPE) by extrusion process per AWWA
C215 in the manufacturer shop.

4.3.2 The wrapping tape in field shall be cold applied in ambient and get the excellent
performance for electrical insulation and corrosion resistance, as for the quality provisions
shall refer to specification in Appendix A.

4.3.3 The tape shall be furnished in standard width as recommended in Appendix A.

4.4 Coating and Wrapping of Underground Piping having more than 70o C temperature:-

Underground piping having more than 70o C temperature shall not be coated with HDPE.
The same shall be provided with inorganic zinc silicate primer 1 coat@65-75 µ DFT/coat
followed by HB coal tar epoxy coating. All these piping shall be covered with gravel (150
thick) all around before soil filling.

5 APPLICATION OF SHOP COATING & WRAPPING

All straight pipes shall be shop coated with the extrusion HDPE which shall be supplied by
pipe or coating manufacturer.

6 APPLICATION OF FIELD COATING & WRAPPING

6.1 General

6.1.1 The cold applied tape and primer shall be applied to the weld joints, fittings, branches, and
any required protective portions.

6.1.2 Riser from underground pipe shall be wrapped with a minimum of 500 MM above finished
grade (top of paving).

6.1.3 The portion of U/G piping not buried in soil such as raised above paving excluding para. 6.1.2,
installed in pit or trench etc., shall be coated with the same painting system as aboveground
piping as per project specification Doc.6684-EQS-G00-EB-0010 for Painting.

6.2 Wrapping Tape Application

6.2.1 The surface to be primed shall be free from all weld spatter, mill scale, rust, lacquer, oil,
grease, dirt, and other foreign matter per SSPC-SP3 for carbon steel, SSPC-SP1 for
stainless steel and galvanized steel, and prepared surface shall be dry.

6.2.2 A uniform and continuous coat of primer shall be applied in accordance with the
manufacturer's recommendations for the specific tape and primer system. The primer
coverage and drying time shall be sufficient to ensure an effective bond between the
substrate and the coating.

6.2.3 Priming application shall be limited to that amount that can be wrapped during the same
workday; otherwise the steel must be reprimed.

6.2.4 Wrapped the innerwrap and outerwrap tapes perpendicular around the pipes at the
beginning of wrapping in order to fix the tape firmly, and then spiral wrapping with overlap
of approximate 13 MM for 50 MM and 25 MM for larger than 50 MM wide tape. While
applying, proper tension shall be applied to the tape by wrapping machine.

6.2.5 Wrapping tape for tees, branches and flanged fittings shall be cross-wound around the
corner portion, pull the tape tightly so as never to cause corrugation and wrinkle to form
seals or cavities.

6.2.6 Apply one and one-quarter turns of tape at the beginning and completed points of tape
wrapping.

6.2.7 The wrapping tape shall cover the existed PE layer on straight pipe with a distance of 150
MM minimum.

6.2.8 A minimum of two layers of wrapping tape shall be applied. In no case the total thickness
of the tape shall be less than 2 times thickness as recommended by manufacturer.

6.3 Mastic Application

Valves, flanges and other fittings buried in soil shall have mastic puttying over the cleaned entire
irregular surface to get a flat smooth appearance, it shall be taken to insure complete coverage of
valves and flanges and that a tight seal is made with adjacent pipe wrap.

7 INSPECTION AND TESTING

7.1 Thickness Inspection

Measure the thickness of the tape at not less than 10 locations per roll by a micrometer.

7.2 Holiday Test on Shop Testing

After coating and wrapping, the surface shall be tested per AWWA C215 by manufacturer.
Any pinholes or missed spots shall be repaired and re-tested.

7.3 Holiday Test on Field Testing

When the wrapping tape wrapped entirely in the field, all the line wrapped shall pass the
range of 9,000 Volts D. C. holiday test per NACE SP0274 standard. If an electric spark
occurs, it shall be marked and repaired immediately. All repaired parts shall be subjected to
the electric holiday test as above.

7.4 The wrapped piping shall pass the holiday testing and no electrical spark occurs, if
happened, the holiday shall be marked with a chalk or crayon to identify the area for repair.

7.5 The repair shall be made by removing loose or disbonded material from the area around the
holiday. The exposed area shall be repaired using the original primer and tape. The repaired
area shall be retested with holiday detector after repair finish.

7.6 The applicator shall submit detailed procedures and quality plans for review & approval.

8 TRANSPORTATION AND BACKFILL

8.1 Adequate provision shall be taken to protect the coating from physical damage during
subsequent pipe handling, lowering, and backfilling operation.

8.2 Wrapped pipe shall be handled (loading and unloading) at all times so as not to damage the
coating (before, during or after transit) and shall not be run down skidways to or from cars
and trucks. Pipe shall not be allowed to ram into other pipe or to drop on rocky ground.

Bare cables, chains, hooks, metal bars or narrow skids shall not be used in handling
wrapped pipe. Pipe shall be lifted from carrier with wide padded slings and stockpiled on
wide padded skids.

8.3 Backfilling material adjacent to the coated and wrapped pipe shall be free of scrap, sticks,
rocks, or other hard debris which would tend to damage the coating. The detail of sand
bedding shall conform to underground piping standard.

9 APPENDIX A - MATERIAL OF COLD APPLIED TAPE
