DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Software

The DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage software is a licensed option that allows a Data
Domain system to act as a an OpenStorage storage server for Symantec's NetBackup and
Backup Exec products. The DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage software includes a
plug-in (referred to as the Data Domain OST plug-in) that runs on the supported
NetBackup and Backup Exec media servers defined in the Compatibility Lists below.

Compatibility Lists
For specific software and hardware configurations tested and supported by Data Domain,
see the compatibility lists at the Data Domain Support Portal:

New in Release 2.3.0.0

Backup Exec 2010 Enhancements

• Optimized Duplication support
Note: Optimized Duplication with Backup Exec requires DD OS 4.9.1 or higher.
• 48 concurrent jobs from one media server (increased from 16)

Encrypted Managed File Replication

Provides the ability to encrypt all optimized duplication traffic between two Data
Domain systems. This capability is applicable to both NetBackup and Backup Exec.
Features include:
• Standard SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol
• Strong encryption using 256-bit AES
• ADH-AES256-SHA cipher suite
• Optimized duplication traffic is encrypted on a per system basis
• Works independently or concurrently with the Encryption of data-at-rest software
option
Note: Requires both the source and the destination to run DD OS 5.0 or higher for this
functionality.

Advanced Load Balancing and Link Failover Enhancements

The enhancements for this capability are applicable to both NetBackup and Backup Exec.
• Automatic retry to recover and resume job following link failure; transparent restart
of in flight jobs on same link
• Automatic and transparent failover to another link in the group and resume job
following a link failure
Note: Requires DD OS 5.0 or higher for the transparent failover functionality.

Command Line Changes

All the commands in the "ost" family are removed in this release. These commands are
replaced by "ddboost" set of commands.
Refer to the DD OS 5.0 Command Reference Guide for details on how to use the DD OS 5.0
CLI commands.

4 Data Domain Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Release Notes Version 2.3.3.0-254407
Fixed in Release 2.3.3.0
The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec
OpenStorage Version 2.3.3.0.
Bug # Description
55419 Fixed the issue in which running NetBackup 6.5 on an AIX media server sharing a 10 GbE
NIC with tcp_nodelayack enabled with 2 other LPARS led to an incorrectly restored data
file due to problems with the socket read code.
56140 Fixed the issue in which backups fail with distributed segment processing and ifgroup
enabled in a Data Domain system running DD OS 4.9.3.3 and the DD Boost plug-in ver-
sion 2.3.2.x.

Fixed in Release 2.3.2.0

The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec
OpenStorage Version 2.3.2.0.
Bug # Description
48851 Fixed the issue that could cause a source Data Domain system to panic if NetBackup
deleted a destination image in the middle of opt-dup. (This is normally a rare event.)
50555 Fixed the issue that caused timing delays during polling and opt-dup operations, which
occurred due to mismatches between the DD Boost method of reconnection attempts and
the NetBackup method of polling timeouts.
50849 Fixed the issue in which images created in NetBackup by older plug-ins could not be
restored.
51493 Fixed the issue in which slow DNS lookups occurred, generating errors and preventing
jobs from starting, because disk mount failures were not retried.
52222 Fixed the issue in which backups with distributed segment processing enabled would inter-
mittently cause a crash in environments running HP-UX IA64.

Fixed in Release 2.3.1.2

The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec
OpenStorage Version 2.3.1.2.
Bug # Description
55419 Fixed the issue in which a file restore during multiple TCP connection interruptions causes
incorrectly restored data; this fix improves the plugin's error handling with more accurate
socket-level re-reading during restoration.

Data Domain Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Release Notes Version 2.3.3.0-254407 5
Fixed in Release 2.3.1.0
The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec
OpenStorage Version 2.3.1.0.
Bug # Description
45835 Improved the performance of file lookup during file deletes and catalog cleanups.
46636 Modified the installer for Networker so that the HP-UX and AIX DD Boost libraries are be
linked with -Bsymbolic.
47067 Improved the performance for Solaris SPARC media servers with UltraSPARC T2 and
higher processors.
49752 Fixed the issue where NetBackup failed on AIX 6.1 with NetBackup 7.0.

Fixed in Release 2.3.0.0

The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec
OpenStorage Version 2.3.0.0.
Bug # Description
35838 Fixed the bptm runtime error during TCP congestion on Windows 32 bit OS.
40361 Fixed the issue where Flash Backup on GDA failed.
41339 Configured the Windows Plug-in installer to install 32 or 64 bit version to match OS ver-
sion.
44324 Fixed the issue where there were long lookup time if there was a large number of files in a
directory.

Known Issues
NetBackup 6.5.x and 7.0
When connected to Data Domain systems at DDOS 4.8 or greater, NetBackup will
miscalculate the % full of a logical storage unit based upon the data supplied by the 2.2.x.
This may cause the logical storage unit to be marked down for exceeding the high-water
mark. This is a known Symantec NetBackup issue. The Symantec Etrack is 2062645.
The recommended workaround is to temporarily disable high-water checking by
increasing the high-water threshold to greater than 100%. Note that the Data Domain
system will raise an alert in case the system is actually approaching full.
Refer to the KB article entitled: NetBackup Reports Insufficient Space Backup Exec
Displays 1x De-duplication Ratio at https://my.datadomain.com.

Backup Exec 2010

• The device concurrent operations count must be set properly (see DD Boost for
Symantec OpenStorage Administration Guide) to avoid multiple failure scenarios.
• Cannot delete OpenStorage device if connection is lost to the OpenStorage server.

6 Data Domain Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Release Notes Version 2.3.3.0-254407
Add an OpenStorage device. Before restarting services bring down the OpenStorage
server or remove the LSU. After services have restarted, the device will remain
undiscovered. Any attempt to delete the device results in a "Invalid Physical Library
Argument" and the device cannot be removed from BE. This is a known Symantec
Backup Exec issue. The Symantec Etrack is 1913763.

AIX
Plug-in install or update failure
The NetBackup Remote Manager and Monitor Service (nbrmms) must be stopped. Even
in this case, the install script may fail with an error indicating 'a plug-in already exists' as
shown below. In this case, run /usr/sbin/slibclean to remove unused modules from
memory.
bash-3.2# ./install.sh
a plugin already exists, do you want to proceed with installation? (y
or n) y
Installing the Data Domain OpenStorage Client Libraries ...
cp libstspiDataDomain.so /usr/openv/lib/ost-plugins/
libstspiDataDomain.so
cp: /usr/openv/lib/ost-plugins/libstspiDataDomain.so: Cannot open or
remove a
file containing a running program.

ERROR in copying libstspiDataDomain.so to

/usr/openv/lib/ost-plugins/libstspiDataDomain.so, error = 1

Retry the install.sh after executing the following command:

bash-3.2# /usr/sbin/slibclean
Since the modules have now been unloaded from memory, the install.sh script should
run without any issues. We have seen this issue only if a plug-in was installed before and
is being replaced by another instance.

DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Configuration

Recommendations
• DNS Bypass - necessary to avoid too many requests to DNS server
• On each media server, add one entry for each Data Domain systems's FQDN
Edit /etc/hosts file: "<ip> <FQDN> <alias>"
• On each Data Domain systems, add one entry for each media server that may
access the DDR
Using: net add host <ip> <FQDN> <alias>
• Permission check - the Data Domain systems can validate the media host permission

Data Domain Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Release Notes Version 2.3.3.0-254407 7
On each Data Domain systems, add one entry for each media server for permission
check
Using: nfs add /backup/ost <FQDN> (rw,no_root_squash,no_all_squash,insecure)
• High Stream Count - the media server TCP/IP configuration for best performance
Solaris Media Server: ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_time_wait_interval 2000
Windows Media Server: the recommended changes to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Paramet
ers from the defaults are:
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 10 (For Windows 2003 and 2008)
TcpWindowSize = 262144 (For Windows 2003 only)
Linux Media Server:
echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_rfc1337
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_recycle
• Firewall work around -
Request Data Domain SE to set the mount port to a specific port number
• Increase jobs per media server -
Request Data Domain SE to set NFS_CLIENT_CONNS=0, so that NFS total
connection check will be used instead.
