WHAT TO KNOW

Origins and Cultural Background of Selected Festival

The Moriones Festival is a colorful folk-religious festival

during holy week in the island known as the “heart of the
Philippines,” the island of Marinduque.
Origin: This festival is a reenactment of the story of Saint
Longinus. He was the centurion who pierced the side of
Jesus Christ and regained his vision after drops of blood
and water hit his eyes.
Cultural Background: Participants play the role of Roman soldiers and wear the moriones costume
so that no one can identify them. The Morions wear their costumes for an entire week. Only when
they eat or sleep, they take it off. They perceive this as a form of sacrifice as they must stand and
walk around on thin strap slippers under the hot sun while wearing the heavy wooden masks.

Kadayawan Festival is held in Davao every third week of

August in celebration of thanksgiving for good harvest with parade floats of fresh
fruits and flowers, and street dancing with colorful tribal
costumes, and accessories.
Origins: Kadayawan Festival is the pagan belief of the
ethnic tribes in Davao. Back in the day, the ethnic tribes
could come together at the foot of Mt. Apo, the Philippines’
highest mountain, to celebrate abundant crops, performing
rituals that paid tribute to the nature gods Manama and Bulan.
Cultural background: Kadayawan is a native expression in Dabawnon tongue. It is derived from the
word “madayaw” which means good, valuable, and superior; Hence, Kadayawan Festival Tagalog
means pasasalamat at pagpapahalaga. It is the celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of
nature, the wealth off culture, and bounties of harvest and serenity living.

Ibalong Festival
The Ibalong Festival is held in Bicol Region, aims to
express friendliness, enthusiasm, and goodwill to all
people.
Origin and Cultural Background: Ibalong Festival is
a non-religious festival in Legazpi City, Albay, Philippines
based on the Ibalong Epic and is held on August. The
festival celebrates the epic story Ibalong who was
accompanied by three legendary heroes, namely
Baltog, Handyong, and Bantong. In this festival, people parade in the streets wearing masks and
costumes like the heroes and villains of the epic.
