Figures of Speech
Figures of speech are expressions that are used in other than a plain or
literal way. They give extra dimension to language by stimulating the imagination
and evoking visual, sensual imagery. They are also defined as words or phrases
used in a non-literal sense for rhetorical or vivid effect.
1. Simile – is a figure of speech in which two unlike objects are compared with
one another through the use of like or as. A proper simile creates a
comparison between two objects that are different enough form each other
such that their comparability appears unlikely (LiteraryDevices Editors,
Google, 2013).

4. Irony – is a figure of speech that signifies the opposite of what is being said
(Relente & Galapon, 1999). It is also called an ironic statement. The words
used in ironic statements express praise or approval, however, the real
purpose is to criticize, mock or ridicule. It is one of the most widely-known
literary devices, which is used to express a strong emotion or raise a point
(Kidsconnect.com, 2017).
