Topic 3
The first text with the title: Parents vs teens. I hope you enjoy reading the texts and doing the
tasks.
Parents VS Kids
B. Speaking
Work with your partner. Discuss these questions:
1. What should teenagers do so that their parents won't worry about them? = Teenagers
should be open about everything to their parents, asking about their parents opinion
about everything that he/she will follow and doing in the future, teenagers must
maintain their communication with their parents
2. What should parents do to avoid conflicts with teenagers? = - Help your teens to calm
down by showing your understanding, letting them express their disappointment, or
giving them space to if they need it
-look after yourself – talking to someone you trust can help you feel better about the
situation
-take your time to express your feelings, thoughts, and wishes as best as you can
-keep it simple and short- this can encourage your teens to listen
-try to negotiate a decision that you can both live with, or at least try to be clear about
what you can’t agree
3. Should parents tell teenagers what kinds of friends to have or what kind of clothes to wear?
Explain. = As your child enters the teenage years, friends will become more important.
Positive, accepting and supportive friendships are an important part of the journey to
adulthood for your child. For teenagers, good friends can be like a personal support
group. Friends and friendships give teenagers:
Positive friendship are an important part of the journey to adulthood. They help
teenagers learn important social and emotional skills, like being sensitive to other
people’s thoughts, feelings and wellbeing.
Praising teenagers when you see them being fair, trusting and supportive encourages them
to keep working on those positive social traits.
But Not all friendships are positive or good for children. Among teenagers, negative
relationships are sometimes called ‘toxic friendships’ and the people in them are called
‘frenemies’. Your child might need help to avoid or deal with toxic friendships. So I
think parents should tell teenagers what kinds of friends to have
Think about why this is so important to you, is this a form of control? Are your children
dressing in an unacceptable manner? What do you think is appropriate? What are your
preferences vs your teen’s preferences? These questions are important and can help you
as you talk with your children about what they wear and the importance of dressing in
different ways.
