Problems On SRSS Method

The document describes using the response spectrum method to analyze a 2-story building modeled as a 2 degree-of-freedom shear building. It provides the mass, stiffness, natural frequencies, mode shapes, and response spectrum values. It then calculates the top floor displacement and base shear for each mode and takes the square root of the sum of the squares to get 0.205 m for top floor displacement and 41.08 kN for base shear. A second example is provided to calculate seismic forces using dynamic analysis for a 3-story building, providing free vibration properties and calculating modal mass, mode participation factors, acceleration coefficients, and distributing lateral forces up the height of the building.

Problems on SRSS Method

Example 4
A two-story building is modelled as 2-DOF system and rigid floors as shown in the Figure 4.9.
Determine the top floor maximum displacement and base shear due to El-Centro, 1940
earthquake ground motion using the response spectrum method. Take the inter-story
stiffness, k =197.392 × 10 N/m and the floor mass, m = 2500 kg and damping ratio as 2%.

Solution:
Mass of each floor, m = 2500 kg and stiffness, k =
197.392 kN/m thus, Stiffness matrix

Using the equation

{ - } =0 i = 1,2,3,…….n
det =0

Where

= eigen values of the ith mode

= eigen vector or mode shape of the ith mod
= natural frequency in the ith mode.

Using above equation, eigen values and eigen vectors can be obtained as = 6.283 rad/sec
and =12.566 rad/sec
Modal participation factors are given by

Similarly,

1st Mode Response

From Response Spectra Sd1 = 0.151 and Sa1 = 5.971

Top Floor Displacement
1.333x1x.151 = 0.2013
Base Shear
2x197.392x 103x.5x1.333x0.151= 39.73 kN

2nd Mode Response

From Response Spectra Sd2 = 0.06843 and Sa2 = 10.722
Top Floor Displacement
= -0.333x1x0.06843 = --0.0228
Base Shear
= 2x197.392x 103x1 x-0.333x0.06843
= -8.9960 kN
SRSS
Base Shear = √39.73 8.996 = 41.08 kN
Drift = 0.204 0.0214 = 0.205m

Example 5
Determine the design seismic forces for the building as shown in the figure below using dynamic
analysis and show the distribution of lateral forces with building height. Consider the free vibration
properties of the building as given in the table. Damping is 5%. The building is in Zone 5 used for school
building. It is built using special moment resisting frame. Use SRSS method.
