2 Receiver Configuration

2.1 Introduction
The Trimble Configuration Toolbox software provides the tools to
configure various Trimble GPS receivers. These tools let you change
the settings that control the operation of the receiver. These settings
are stored in an application file.
Configuration Toolbox lets you create and edit the files, transfer them
to and from your receiver, and activate a file stored in the receiver so
that the file settings take effect on the receiver. You can also
download, from the receiver, a file that reflects the current state and
operation of the receiver.
With Configuration Toolbox, you can perform the following
operations:
• Store application files on both your receiver and computer
• Maintain multiple files to represent multiple modes of operation
• Save the application file to audit the operating settings of a
receiver

2.3 Creating an Application File

To configure a receiver, create a new application file to define the
receiver settings. To create a new application file, complete the
following steps:
1. Select File / New.
2. Select the type of receiver:

This selection defines the type of application file that is created. It also
ensures that the available pages match the selected receiver.
B Tip – If the type of receiver is not in the list, use the Any Receiver option.
This option creates a file that contains most settings for any Trimble
receiver. When a file of this type is sent to a receiver, the receiver ignores
settings that do not apply.

You can also modify an existing file that is stored either on the
receiver or on your computer. For more information, see Opening,
Saving, and Closing an Application File on page 12, and Getting and
Transmitting an Application File on page 19.

Figure 2.1 Configuration File dialog

This dialog shows a list of the types of page that are:

• contained in the file. These page types appear in the Contents
list.
• available to add to the file. These page types appear in the
Available list.
Each page controls one aspect of the operation of a receiver.
Note – If you open or save the application file on your computer, the
title bar includes the full filename of the application file.

Configuration Toolbox User Guide 9

2 Receiver Configuration

2.4.1 Contents list

The application file stores the receiver settings. These settings are
grouped into pages. The Contents list shows the pages that the
application file contains. When you select a page from this list, the
contents of that page appear in the page area.
Note – The File page is always included. Some page types can appear
multiple times. For more information, refer to the online Help.

Adding a page
To add a new page to an application file, complete the following steps:
1. Complete one of the following actions:
– Highlight the page then click the Add button
– Double-click the page in the Available list
2. Change the settings in the page area.

Removing a page
To remove a page from an application file, complete one of the
following actions:
• Highlight the page then click the Remove button
• Double-click the page in the Contents list
If you remove a page from an application file, Configuration Toolbox
retains the settings of the page for as long as the Configuration File
dialog is open.
The General, Reference, SV Enable, and Antenna pages can be added
only once to a .cfg file. If you remove one of these pages,
Configuration Toolbox remembers the settings of the page until you
close the .cfg file.

10 Configuration Toolbox User Guide

Receiver Configuration 2

If you put the page back into the .cfg file, you do not have to re-enter
the parameters. For example, if you put the Reference page back into
the .cfg file, the Configuration Toolbox software will remember the
original base station coordinates.
The Serial, Output, and Device pages can have multiple entries in a
.cfg file. If these pages are removed and re-added, the Configuration
Toolbox software does not remember the previous settings and goes
back to the default settings.

2.4.2 Page area

Use the page area to view and edit the configuration of a selected
page. Any modifications are stored only when the application file is
saved on the computer or the file is transmitted to a receiver.
For more information about the details of each page, the page settings,
and how the settings affect the receiver, refer to the online Help.

2.4.3 Operations
You can perform the following operations from the Configuration File
dialog.

Transmit
To transmit the application file to an attached receiver, click the
Transmit button or select Communications / Transmit File. For more
information, see Getting and Transmitting an Application File on page
19.

Save
To save the application file on your computer, click the Save button or
select File / Save. For more information, see Opening, Saving, and
Closing an Application File on page 12.

Configuration Toolbox User Guide 11

2 Receiver Configuration

Close
To close the Configuration File dialog, click the Close button or
select File / Close. If the file was modified since it was last saved, you
can save the file before closing. For more information, see Close on
page 13.

2.5 Opening, Saving, and Closing an

Application File
You can save application files to your computer or to the GPS receiver.
This section discusses how to move the application file that you have
created in the Configuration File dialog to and from permanent
storage on your computer.

B Tip – You do not need to store an application file on your computer when
you configure a receiver. However, it does provide a permanent copy of
the settings that were sent to a receiver. You can also use a stored
application file to configure multiple receivers and as a template to create
additional configuration files.

2.5.1 Open
To open an application file that is stored on your computer, select
File / Open.
Configuration Toolbox lets you work with one application file at a
time. For this reason, File / New and File / Open are only available if
no application file is open for editing in the Configuration File dialog.

2.5.2 Save
To save an application file, do one of the following actions:
• Click the Save button
• Select File / Save

12 Configuration Toolbox User Guide

Receiver Configuration 2

Saving a file writes a copy of the application file to the file whose
name appears in the caption of the Configuration File dialog. An
application file that has not been saved previously will open the Save
As dialog.
Note – Application files are stored with a .cfg extension.

2.5.3 Save As
Use the Save As dialog to modify the filename or the disk or the folder
where the file is stored. It is always available when you select
File / Save As, and is automatically used when a file is saved for the
first time.
The filename used to store the application file in the computer and the
name under which the file is stored in the receiver can differ. The Store
in receiver as name on the File page determines the name used on the
receiver.

2.5.4 Close
Click the Close button to close the Configuration File dialog and the
application file. If the file was modified since it was last saved, you
can save the file before closing.

Configuration Toolbox User Guide 13

2 Receiver Configuration

2.6 Creating a Report

With Configuration Toolbox, you can create an ASCII text report of
the contents of an application file.

Use this report to review the contents or to print the report for storage
or transmission, such as faxing.
To create a report, select File / Report. This option is only available
when you have an application file open.
The report shows the current state of the application file. The report is
displayed in Microsoft Notepad. You can use the menu options in
Notepad to print or save the file. When you have finished with the
report, close Notepad and return to Configuration Toolbox.

14 Configuration Toolbox User Guide

Receiver Configuration 2

Note – The report is a snapshot representation of the application file.

Saving the report does not save the application file. You cannot create
an application file from a report. Also, the report is only a true
representation of the application file at the time the report was
created.

2.7 Communicating with a Receiver

To communicate between the computer and the receiver, complete the
following steps:
1. Connect an I/O port on the receiver to a cable. The type of cable
depends on the type of receiver. For more information, contact
your Trimble dealer.
2. Connect the cable to a COM port on your computer.
3. Start Configuration Toolbox.

2.7.1 Port
Select Communications / Port. Select the COM port on your computer
to which the GPS receiver is connected.

The current communications settings appear in the status bar of the

main window.

Configuration Toolbox User Guide 15

2 Receiver Configuration

The other settings of baud rates, parity, and flow control are chosen by
the receiver and are matched automatically by Configuration Toolbox.
These values reflect the settings last used to communicate with the
receiver, and changing the values has no effect on communications.
For more information, see Receiver settings on page 16.

2.7.2 Receiver settings

The receiver selects the speed (that is, baud rate) and other parameters
used to communicate with Configuration Toolbox. You can control
these settings from the Serial page. For more information, refer to the
online Help.

2.7.3 Communication
While Configuration Toolbox is communicating or attempting to
communicate with the receiver, the message Communicating with Receiver
appears. During this time no other operations are possible.
Note – Communicating with a receiver can disrupt the current tasks of
a receiver for a short period of time.

2.7.4 Communication errors

If communication with the receiver is unsuccessful, Configuration
Toolbox reports the error.
Note – For a full explanation of, and solutions to, all error messages,
refer to the Help topic Communication Errors.

Error messages
The most common error message is No response from receiver.

16 Configuration Toolbox User Guide

Receiver Configuration 2

This error is caused by one of the following conditions:

• The receiver is not physically connected to the computer; that
is, the receiver is not connected to the computer port selected in
Communications / Port.
• The receiver is not powered up.
Check these conditions and retry the operation.
Other error messages can show that communication was established
with the receiver, but that the requested operation could not be
completed successfully.
This occurs when the following events occur:
• Data was corrupted during transfer.
• The receiver rejected the file or operation. For example, the
receiver will reject an application file if there is no available
space to store the file, or if the file is unsuitable for the receiver.
Note – If the receiver has run out of space, use the Delete Remote File
option to delete a single file that is no longer in use. For more
information, see Deleting an Application File, page 23. You can delete
all of the files stored in the receiver using the Reset Receiver options
described in Resetting the Receiver, page 25.
A file will also be rejected as unsuitable if the file:
• is the wrong type. Use the For field on the File page to check
which receiver the file applies to.
• has been corrupted during transmission.
Communication errors can also be caused by the receiver outputting
other data on the same port it is using to communicate with
Configuration Toolbox. In this case, Configuration Toolbox will not
be able to successfully and consistently communicate.
Solutions to this problem are as follows:
• Use a different receiver port to communicate with
Configuration Toolbox.

Configuration Toolbox User Guide 17

2 Receiver Configuration

• Retry the operation.

• Turn off the output on that port. For more information, refer to
the online Help and to the manual for the receiver.
• Reset the receiver using the Erase Battery-Backed RAM option.
For more information, see Resetting the Receiver, page 25.

2.7.5 Status bar

The current communication settings are reported on the status bar at
the bottom of the main window. The settings include the port being
used as defined in Communications / Port, and the parameters last
used to communicate with the receiver. The parameters are baud rate,
parity, data bits, stop bits, and flow control.

2.7.6 Receiver details

To display information about the receiver, select
Communications / Receiver Details. To close the dialog when you
finish reviewing the information, click OK.

2.8 Getting and Transmitting an Application

File
The Get File procedure retrieves an application file from the receiver.
After creating or modifying an application file, the next procedure is
typically to transmit the file to a receiver. The settings can then be
applied to, and/or stored in, the receiver. The following sections
describe the Get File procedure and Transmit File procedure.

2.8.1 Getting an application file

When you get an application file from the receiver, the file is opened
in the Configuration File dialog. For this reason the Get File menu
option is only available if no application file is open in the
Configuration File dialog.

B Tip – This section assumes an understanding of Communicating with a

Receiver on page 15.

To get a file, select Communications / Get File. Configuration

Toolbox communicates with the receiver and displays a list of the
application files that are stored in the receiver.

Configuration Toolbox User Guide 19

2 Receiver Configuration

Select the application file that you want to retrieve, and click the Get
File button. The software retrieves the file from the receiver. The file
opens in the Configuration File dialog. Alternatively, the software
reports an error as discussed in Communication errors on page 16.

2.8.2 Current and Default application files

Some receivers offer two special application files: DEFAULTS and
CURRENT. You can download, edit, and save these special files on the
computer.
• The DEFAULTS file contains the original receiver configuration
and cannot be altered. This file is used to configure the receiver
after it is reset. Configuration Toolbox does not allow files with
this name to be sent to the receiver.
• The CURRENT file reflects the current receiver configuration.
These files are often used as the starting point for making a small
change to the configuration of a receiver. Click the Get File button to
retrieve the current application file, change the setting in the
Configuration File dialog, then transmit the file back to the receiver.
Before transmitting the file back to the receiver, clear the Store In
Receiver check box or change the filename.

2.8.3 Transmitting an application file

To transmit an application file to the receiver, the file must be open in
the Configuration File dialog.
Note – For more information about how to open a file in the
Configuration dialog, see Creating an Application File on page 8 and
Opening, Saving, and Closing an Application File on page 12.

B Tip – This section assumes an understanding of Communicating with a

Receiver on page 15.

actions:
• Click the Transmit button on the Configuration File dialog
• Select Communications / Transmit File
Configuration Toolbox sends the application file to the receiver and
reports that the operation was successful or that an error occurred. For
more information about errors, see Communication errors on page 16.
If the application file is to be stored in the receiver, Configuration
Toolbox checks the Stored in Receiver name against the files already
stored in the receiver before transmitting the file. If a file of the same
name is found, the following dialog appears:

Click the Yes button to overwrite the existing file with the file that you
are transmitting. Click the No button to abort the operation. The
Configuration File dialog appears. You can change the file name and
then click the Transmit button again.
Note – The special file DEFAULTS cannot be overwritten. Do not
name an application file CURRENT if you want to revert to these
settings while in the field. For more information, see Current and
Default application files on page 20.
If the operation was successful, the file is stored on the receiver, or is
applied to the receiver, or both, depending on the File page settings.
For more information, refer to the online Help.
If the Stored in receiver check box on the File page is selected, you
can use the Get File operation and the file should appear in the
receiver directory listing, along with its size, creation date, and time.

2.11 Resetting the Receiver

C Warning – Make sure that you save any receiver data files to your
computer before you use the Erase File System option. All files in the
receiver except the DEFAULTS application file are permanently deleted
with this option.

Resetting the receiver loads the DEFAULTS application file and returns
the receiver to its original configuration.
To reset the receiver, complete the following steps:
1. Select Communications / Reset Receiver. The Reset Receiver
dialog appears:

2. Select one of the check boxes:

– Erase Battery-Backed RAM check box will erase any data
stored in the nonvolatile memory of the receiver, but not
data stored to files, such as data and application files.
– Erase File System check box will erase all the files in a
receiver, including application files, as well as any logged
data files where applicable. The only exception is the
DEFAULTS application file in the receiver which cannot be
erased.
3. Click the Reset button.

3 Application File Pages

3.1 Introduction
An application file consists of one or more application file pages.
Each application file page configures different options on a GPS
receiver. These options describe serial port settings, serial outputs, or
general configuration items. General configuration items include
settings for items as diverse as the elevation mask of the receiver and
information about the coordinate system.
Some pages are not supported on a given receiver. Some pages may
have slightly different options. These different options depend on the
receiver they are chosen for.
When creating a new application file, best practice is to select the
receiver type rather than Any Receiver option. When you select a
specific receiver type, only the relevant options are available.

3.2 Page Descriptions

The following table describes all the pages that are available. For more
information about a page, refer to the online Help. To access the Help,
press [F1].

Page name Description

Alarm Activates or deactivates various alarm conditions in a receiver. The
result of an alarm condition being met (that is, triggering an active
alarm) is dependent on the receiver.
Antenna Lets you enter the antenna height as true vertical height or as
measured height with an associated antenna group, type, and
measurement method. For any measurement method selected, the
true vertical height is computed from the measured height. The
height must be entered in meters.
Antenna model Configures the antenna models for the base antenna and for the
rover antenna.
CMR input Configures reception of CMR corrections for multibase operation.

Page name Description

Coordinate system Shows the coordinate system that is contained in the current
application file. The coordinate system may have been selected from
the coordinate system database, included in an application file
retrieved from a receiver, or imported from a DC file.
Device Configures devices that can be attached to the receiver. To include a
device in the application file, select the device from the drop-down
list.
Display mode The Trimble MS Series (that is, the MS750™, MS850, and MS860™)
GPS receivers support the option to configure different receiver
modes that enable and disable receiver screens and menus. For
more information, refer to the online Help and the MS Series
Operation Manual.
Display mode settings are only visible on MS Series receivers that
have a display, such as the MS750 receiver.
File Configures the filename, mode, and creation details. Since this data
is always associated with the file, the File page is always included in
your application file.
General Contains controls commonly used when configuring a receiver, such
as elevation and PDOP masks.

Logging Configures how a receiver records GPS position and measurement

data.

Output Contains settings for each data output message which the receiver
transmits. The settings are used in conjunction with the Serial page to
completely configure a target port for output.
An application file can contain up to 20 different output messages.
Variants of the same type are treated as separate output message
types. For example, GSOF PosTime and GSOF PosLLH are treated
as two distinct output messages.
Each message must be independently configured and included.
Position mode Configures the RTK position solution type depending on the base line
length.

Reference Contains settings for defining a reference position that can be used
by the receiver when outputting RTCM or CMR corrections.

RTCM input Configures reception of RTCM corrections.

Page name Description

RTK network control Configures RTK network control.
A real-time kinematic (RTK) network control system comprises a
number of base stations that share information. The number of base
stations in the network can be two or more and is, typically, at least
four or more.
Serial Configures the serial ports on a receiver.
Shutdown Enables or disables the shutdown option.
Shutdown is used to shut down a receiver or to put a receiver into
sleep mode after a time activation session.
Static Tells the receiver to start in Kinematic or Static mode. Only some
receivers support kinematic modes of operation.

SV Enable Specifies under what health conditions each of the 32 GPS satellites
will be used. SV stands for Space Vehicle. GPS satellite health is an
indication of the quality of each satellite’s signal. The satellite health
indication is set by the ground controllers, and transmitted directly to
the receiver by the satellites.
Time activation Configures a receiver to start up at a prescribed time.

WAAS Enables or disables the WAAS option.

Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is a network of base
stations and satellites that provide differential GPS (DGPS)
corrections. WAAS is only available in North America.
