Algebraic Expressions Chapter 5 Form 1
Algebraic Expressions Chapter 5 Form 1
Algebraic Expressions Chapter 5 Form 1
● Like terms : Has the same variable with the same power.
- -2m and 3/4m, pq/3 and 6.9pq
● Unlike terms : Does not have the same variable with the same power.
- 2v and 2w, 5xy and -yz
● Example:
- For the term 4x, 4 is the coefficient.
- For the term -3y, -3 is the coefficient.
3. Add and subtract two or more algebraic expressions
➔ When adding and subtracting two or more algebraic expressions, gather the
like terms first. Then, add or subtract the like terms.
b) A watermelon with a mass of 5kg and two durians with the same mass are placed
on an electronic balance. If the reading shown on the balance in m kg, write an
expressions for the mass of a durian.
5kg + ?kg = m kg
(n = mass of durian)
=5+n+n=m
= 5 + 2n = m
= 2n = m - 5

n=( 2

8x + 2y - 10
= 8(3) + 2(4) - 10
= 24 + 8 - 10
= 22
a x a = a² a x a x a = a³ a x a x a x …. = aⁿ (power of n)
Questions :
1. Simplify each of the following.
a) Multiplication
To find the product of algebraic expression with one term, gather all the same
variables and then multiply the number with number and the variable with variable.
3ab² x 4a³b
=3xaxbxbx4xaxaxaxb
=3x4xaxaxaxaxbxbxb
= 12a⁴b³
b) Division
The quotient of algebraic expressions with one term can be obtained by eliminating
the common factors.
20m⁴n² ÷ 5m²n³
20𝑚⁴𝑛²
=
5𝑚²𝑛³
20 𝑥 𝑚 𝑥 𝑚 𝑥 𝑚 𝑥 𝑚 𝑥 𝑛 𝑥 𝑛
= (20 ÷ 50) (eliminate the same variable)
