AIRLIFT

Synopsis
'Airlift' is a war thriller that begins in August 1990 in Kuwait, with Indian businessman Ranjit Katiyal
securing a business agreement with Kuwait's Emir. Katiyal is a cutthroat entrepreneur who will go to
any length to make a profit. He is well-connected and successful in Kuwait and Iraq, and he refers to
himself as a Kuwaiti. He is often dismissive of Indians. He lives in a well-appointed estate in Kuwait
with his wife Amrita and their young daughter Simu.

Later that evening, he learns that Iraq has launched an invasion on Kuwait. He explains that Iraq and
Kuwait have had hostile relations because Iraq owes Kuwait a big dollar debt, and Saddam has asked
Kuwait's leadership to decrease oil supplies in order for prices to rise. Saddam ordered the strike after
Kuwait rejected and remained obstinate. Katiyal feels the raid is only one of many minor border clashes
at this time. He requests that Amrita take the child to London for a few days till the situation calms
down.
When Ranjit discovers that the Indian embassy in Kuwait has been evacuated, he calls the Indian
External Affairs Ministry in New Delhi and speaks with the Joint Secretary, Sanjiv Kohli, to request that
the evacuation be arranged. Later, Iraqi soldiers pillage the camp, and some of the evacuees harass

them. Ranjit pays Major Khalaf a visit and tells him about it, to which the Major just apologizes and
informs that President Saddam has already given Indians permission to leave Kuwait, but they have
no way of doing so. Ranjit travels to Baghdad in the hopes of securing safe passage out of Kuwait,
but he is unsuccessful. The only remaining option, Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz, turns out to be
helpful. He discloses that an Indian merchant ship is due to arrive in Iraq with various supplies, and
permits the Indian refugees to leave on the ship. However, Ranjit later receives news of the UN
embargo and that ships are barred from entering or leaving Iraq, effectively crushing their hopes of
getting out.
The film Airlift tells the narrative of how the Indians, with the help of Ranjit Katyal, managed to survive
the Iraqi assault and cross the border into Jordan despite all odds. The largest and most successful
evacuation ever attempted by any country in the history of the globe took 170,000 Indians home from
Amman.
The Indian government flew over 488 Air India commercial flights into a war zone over the course of
59 days to evacuate and securely return people home. Airlift is an inspiring and engaging edge-of-
your-seat thriller that tells the narrative of the world's largest ever civilian evacuation.

Key Management Lessons:

Lead your team from the front
Everyone was thinking of saving their life when soldiers had attacked their country, at that time like
real leader/Manager Akshay, came up and gave hope to everyone that they can leave the country
sooner or later. Akshay and his three friends act as a leader and lead lakhs of people and try all the
ways to save everyone (had met the ship owner, visited Iran and also met higher officials etc.)
When an organization is not in a good phase, managers have to take the initiative so only employees
will not lose their hope from the company. The leader has to show the way to the team, have to come
up with creative ideas, and find different sources to get the solution to the problem.

Be prepared for the worst situation

It is a human tendency that if everything good is happening then we forget the rest and think about the
good things only, but you should be prepared for the worst situation because “Time can change
anytime”. In the movie Akshay Kumar was a wealthy businessman, enjoying his life but was not ready
for the tough time.
Even though the business or the organization is doing well, still the managers should be ready for the
tough time, competitors can do anything and the situation can change overnight. Managers should
always keep their eyes open to see the different activities or strategies of competitors.

Always have the Never Quit attitude

Akshay Kumar diligently sticks to his mission, No Matter What. Despite failures, he doesn’t
succumb to disappointment, surely not for long. He is low for a while but he pulls himself up
by his socks and gets back to his task. He finds novel ways to make his mission work and
he maintains the grit until he passionately accomplishes what he has set out for. Such
relentless perseverance is a much-needed leader attribute.

Leaders are born in adversities

4
The movie showcases how leaders are born during adversities. When faced with adversity,
the main character, Ranjit Katiyal (Akshay Kumar) who was a money-hungry, egotistical
businessman, transformed and matured into a leader. This demonstrates how people with
the correct aims and matched interests can maximize their leadership potential.

Leaders should have empathy

The film demonstrates that it is natural to acknowledge one's own pain while also being
sympathetic to the pain of others. The protagonist, Ranjit Katiyal, who appeared insensitive
at first, develops empathy for others and attempts to work together while addressing their
worries. Even in routine office tasks, it is critical for a leader to comprehend the concerns of
their subordinates. It is critical to comprehend their professional challenges and assist them
in overcoming them in order for them to flourish in the professional world.
