A Lesson Plan in
Introduction to Philosophy of the Human Person

Content Standard: The learner understands human beings as oriented towards their
impending death.

Performance Standard: The learner writes a philosophical reflection on the meaning of


his/her own life.

Most Essential Learning Competencies: Reflect on the meaning of his/her own life

I. Specific Objectives

At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:


a. Identify the nature of human existence by revisiting key concepts on “death” across
curriculum areas.
b. Discuss man’s search for the meaning of life in relation to the concept of death by
various philosophers. And,
c. Reflect philosophically on the meaning of one’s life in a creative manner through a
differentiated activity.

Module 4: Human Person and Death, ADM, DEPED
Materials: Laptop, T.V.

III. Procedure

A. Activity/Motivation/Review(15 mins)
Directions: The students are asked to identify the nature of human existence
philosophically by revisiting key concepts on “death” across curriculum areas. Videos
of their subject teachers are shown for students to analyze.
*The teacher uses symposium teaching technique & video analysis

B. Analysis (5 mins)

After watching each video, students are asked to answer the following questions.

1. State the concept of death as shown on the video


2. Explain the meaning of life that you have realized after listening to your Subject
teacher’s concept of death
3. What misconception about death have you realized to be wrong?
C. Abstraction (10 mins)

The topic will be presented in class using PowerPoint presentation. The teacher will
use * lecture demonstration technique & Deductive method.

The following are to be discussed/demonstrated:


a. Oriental Philosophy
Siddhartha Gautama (563-483B.C.)
-The Three Marks of Existence (Anicca, Anatta and Dukkha)
Heraclitus
“The only thing that is constant is change”
Lao Tzu – Wu Wei

Activity 1 PUSHCART EXPERIENCE: The students are asked to rank


the things they need most to the least. The things will be bought in a
virtual grocery store and be placed in a virtual pushcart. The students
will be asked to justify their answers.

b. Existentialism
Martin Heidegger- Man as Dasein (Being-towards-Death)
“Being aware of his impending death, it may free him from the
swirl of distractions, the crowd existence, and begin to live an authentic
human life.” – Heidegger

Jean Paul Sartre- “Man’s Essence is Freedom” (Man creates his own
Meaning)
Soren Kierkegaard-Authentic life

Activity 2 AUTHENTICITY PROJECT: List down the 3 things you truly


want in life, the challenges you see in pursuing your goals and the
possible solutions to these challenges.

D. Application/Synthesis (25 mins) Individual Activity


REFLECTION: After realizing that death is certain and impending, we should always
be ready for death. It is just like a thief in the night, so we must prepare for it. Write
an essay about your realizations and your insights about death.

Differentiated Group Activity:
With the differentiated group, the students will apply their learnings on the
Concept of death and the Quest for Authentic Human Existence in a creative
manner. To achieve this;

a. Visual artists will do poster-slogan


b. Musicians will make and perform a jingle
c. Dancers will do an interpretative dance of a song fitting to the theme
d. Actors will do a short skit
e. Online students will do a Collage showing concepts of death and
authentic human existence

Output will be evaluated using the rubric below:
