The Proclamation of Indonesian Independence was read at 10.00 a.m. on Friday, 17 August 1945. The
document was signed by Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta, who were appointed president and vice-
president respectively the following day. The draft was prepared only a few hours earlier on the night of
16 August 1945 by Sukarno, Hatta, and Soebardjo, at the house of Rear-Admiral Tadashi Maeda.

The wording of the proclamation had been discussed at length and had to balance both conflicting internal
Indonesian and Japanese interests. Sukarno drafted the final proclamation which balanced the interests of
both the members of the youth movement and the Japanese. The term ‘TRANSFER OF POWER’ was
used in Indonesian to satisfy Japanese interests to appear that it was an administrative transfer of power,
although the term used ‘pemindahan kekuasaan’ could be perceived to mean political power. The wording
‘BY CAREFUL MEANS’ related to preventing conflict with members of the youth movement. The
wording ‘IN THE SHORTEST POSSIBLE TIME’ was used to meet the needs of all Indonesians for
independence.

Initially the proclamation was to be announced at Djakarta central square, but the military had been sent
to monitor the area, so the venue was changed to Sukarno's house at Pegangsaan Timur 56. The

Exposure to international countries will allow college students the incredible experience of traveling. It
also makes students aware of the way others work on a day-to-day basis. Students will also benefit
socially from studying abroad due to the independence traveling internationally brings someone.
Traveling abroad will make sure students will be more independent and mature than when they left. This
is due to the student getting out of their comfort zone and trying something new.

The following text is for question number 18.

Smoking a cigarette may be a normal routine to some, but in reality, it is purely a harmful activity.
Ingesting smoke can be lethal, and can cause many diseases, such as cancer. But one common issue that
most smokers overlook is its impact on others. This is known as secondhand smoke, the smoke produced
from a cigarette or the smoke exhaled by a smoker. Secondhand smoke is a silent killer.

Smoking doesn't only affect people, but also the environment. I am fairly certain that every person in this
room has seen a cigarette butt lying somewhere, at some point in their lives. Whether it’s on the curb of a
neighborhood street, on the sandy beach, or in your favorite park, this litter can be found just about
anywhere. Most smokers don’t even believe that a cigarette butt is actually litter, but trust me, it is.

I personally think that breathing clean and pure air is a basic right for any human being. Allowing public
smoking is taking away that right, and making the air we breathe in daily possibly harmful to our well-
being.

 18. “Smoking doesn't only affect people, but also the environment.”

Change the sentence above into passive voice!

A. People and environment are affected by smoking.
B. People and environment were affected by smoking.
C. People and environment will be affected by smoking.
D. People and environment can be affected by smoking.
E. People and environment had been affected by smoking.

Questions 20-23 are based on the following passage.

The earth’s crust is split into a number of tectonic plates that float on the hot magma liquid. The plates
keep moving. This is called a tectonic plate, and the movement of the tectonic plate is the trigger for
earthquakes.

Strong earthquakes occur when two tectonic plates collide with each other. As a result, the high
tension arises at the edges of the two plates. The power continues to increase and it eventually reaches an
optimal point. When that energy is released, an earthquake occurs.

The earthquake has also threatened the west coast of the United States. The two plates rub against an
area called the San Andreas Fault. The length of the rubbing plate is about 1,000 kilometers. The resulting
friction also causes collisions. The two plates are currently sliding past each other. Since the fault is
formed by natural disasters that can occur at any time.

Tectonic plates on the surface of the earth always move dynamically so that earthquakes often occur at
the edges of each plate. The most famous earthquake area is the Pacific fire ring, which stretches from
Chile in South America across the eastern coast of North America, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia to
the Tonga Islands.
