Looking Back at your Lesson

In your previous lessons, you traced the history of measurements based on the ancient
periods. You found out that the ancient people used certain body parts to measure something.
Some of these are the forearm length, thumb, handspan etc. They even measure the time of the day
through their shadows.
Measurement is the process of associating numbers with physical quantities and
phenomena. You have learned the following measurements:
 Length is a measure of distance.
 Weight is the measurement of the pull of gravity on an object while mass is a measure of how
heavy an object is.
 Volume is the amount of space an object contains or occupies.
 Capacity is the amount of matter, usually liquid, which a container can hold.
 Time describes how long it takes to do something.
 Temperature is the measure of hotness or coldness of an object.

Introduction of the Topic

Measurement Conversions

1. LENGTH/ DISTANCE

English System

1 foot = 12 inches 1 yard = 3 feet 1 mile = 1760 yards = 5280 feet

In converting from one unit to another, always remember that the product of a number and 1 is the
number itself and the quotient of two same values is equal to 1. These concepts are helpful in
dealing with conversion factors.

Page 2
Math 7 Quarter 2 Week 2
Example 1.1 Convert 54 inches into feet.
Solution: Identify the conversion Since what you need is Simplify.
factor to be used the feet unit, it should
which you will write as be placed in the
a fraction equal to 1. numerator so the other
unit will be cancelled
as you multiply.
1 foot 54
12 inches = 1 foot 54 inches × = feet = 4.5 feet
12 inches 12

Example 1.2 Convert 4 miles to yards.

Solution: Identify the conversion Since what you need is Simplify.
factor to be used the yard unit, it should
which you will write as be placed in the
a fraction equal to 1. numerator so the other
unit will be cancelled as
you multiply.
1760 yards
1 mile = 1760 yards 4 miles × = 7040 yards
1 mile

Example 1.3 Rita is going to make bracelets to sell to her friends. She bought 10 feet of
yarn. She wants to cut it into pieces that are 6 inches long for each bracelet. How many
bracelets can Rita make?
Solution: Convert 10 feet to inches. So, Rita has 120 inches of yarn.
If she will cut it by 6 inches, she
12 inches can make 20 bracelets.
10 feet × =120 inches
1 foot
120 inches
= 20 bracelets
6 inches

Metric System

(km) (hm) (dam) (m) (dm) (cm) (mm)
1,000 m 100 m 10 m 1m 1/10 m 1/100 m 1/1000 m

You will notice that all units are based in meters. Meter is the base unit for length in Metric
System. To change from one metric unit of length to another, multiply or divide by a power of 10.
1
1 km = 1000 m 1 dam = 10 m 1 cm = m or 0.01 m
100
1 1
1 hm = 100 m 1 dm = m or 0.1 m 1 mm = m 0.001m
10 1000

English to Metric System

1 mile = 1.609 km
Changing metric units of length
1. To change from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply by a power of ten. Thus, move the
metric slider to the right until the desired unit is reached. Each metric unit gets 10 times
smaller. Here you can simply move the decimal point to the right depending on the number
of zeroes of the given power of 10.

× 10 km hm dam m dm cm mm

2. To change from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide by a power of ten. Thus, move the
metric slider to the left until the desired unit is reached. Each metric unit gets 10 times
bigger. Here you can simply move the decimal point to the left depending on the number of
zeroes of the given power of 10.
km hm dam m dm cm mm ÷ 10

Page 3
Math 7 Quarter 2 Week 2
Example 1.4 Convert 10 meters to millimeters.

Solution: Since you are converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit, move the
metric slider to the right. Moving 3 units to the right means multiplying by 1,000.
10 meters × 1,000 = 10,000 millimeters

Example 1.5 Convert 95,000 decimeters to kilometers.

Solution: Since you are converting from a smaller unit to a larger unit, move the
metric slider to the left. Moving 4 units to the left means dividing by 10,000.
95,000 decimeters ÷ 10,000 = 9.5 kilometers

Example 1.6 Convert 2.5 kilometers to meters.

Solution: Moving 3 units to the right means multiplying by 1000.

2.5 kilometers × 1,000 = 2,500 meters

Example 1.7 Convert 30 centimeters to meters.

Solution: Moving 2 units to the left means dividing by 100.

30 centimeters ÷ 100 = 0.3 meters

Example 1.8 Mina and Louise decided to join a fun run. After 40 minutes from the
designated starting point, Mina was able to run 3.5 kilometers while Louise was 20 meters
ahead of Mina. How far in meters did Louise run after 40 minutes?

Solution: To determine the distance Louise ran, you need to add 3.5 kilometers and
20 meters. First, convert 3.5 kilometers to meters. Then add the result to 20 meters.
3.5 kilometers × 1,000 = 3,500 meters
3,500 meters + 20 meters = 3520 meters
Therefore, Louise ran 3,520 meters after 40 minutes.

2. MASS/ WEIGHT
Mass is a measurement of the amount of matter something contains, while weight is the
measurement of the pull of gravity on an object. The weight and the mass are not the same thing,
however, on earth the mass of an object is proportional to its weight. In this case, you can assume
that weight and mass mean the same thing.

English System
16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb) 2000 pounds (lbs) = 1 ton (T)

Metric System
The table below shows the equivalent measures of weight (mass). Gram is the basic unit of
mass in the metric system.
Symbol kg hg dag g dg cg mg
Word kilogram hectogram dekagram gram decigram centigram milligram
1000 1 0.001
Meaning 100 grams 10 grams 0.1 gram 0.01 gram
grams gram gram
The procedures in converting metric units of mass/weight is the same with the procedures you have
done with the metric units of length.

English to Metric System

2.205 lbs = 1 kg 1 ton = 1000 kg

Example 2.1 Convert 48 ounces to pounds.

1 pound 48
Solution: 48 ounces × = pounds = 3 pounds
16 ounces 16

Page 4
Math 7 Quarter 2 Week 2
Example 2.2 Convert 1200 ounces to tons.

1 pound 1 ton 1200 1200

Solution: 1200 ounces × × = tons = = 0.0375 tons
16 ounces 2000 pounds 16×2000 32000

Example 2.3 Convert 2400 milligrams to grams.

Solution: Moving 3 units to the left means dividing by 1000.

2400 milligrams ÷ 1000 = 2.4 grams

Example 2.4 Convert 5.5 kilograms to dekagrams.

Solution: Moving 2 units to the right means multiplying by 100.

5.5 kilograms × 100 = 550 dekagrams

Example 2.5 Convert 63 kilograms to pounds

2.205 pounds
Solution: 63 kilograms × = (63×2.205)pounds = 138.9 pounds
1 kilogram

Example 2.6 Mr. Gozon wants to buy enough cat food for his cats for 100 days. His pets eat
5 ounces of cat food twice a day. How many pounds of cat food should he buy if he has 2
cats?

Solution: In the given situation, a cat consumes 10 ounces of cat food in a day. Since
Mr. Gozon has 2 cats, 20 ounces are consumed in a day, and 2,000 ounces
in 100 days. Convert 2,000 ounces to pounds.

1 pound
2 000 oz x =125 pounds
16 oz
Therefore, Mr. Gozon should buy 125 lbs of cat food for his 2 cats.

3. VOLUME/ CAPACITY
Volume is the amount of space an object contains or occupies. The volume of a container is
the capacity of the container. This is measured by the number of cubic units or the amount of fluid
it can contain and not the amount of space the container occupies. The base SI unit for volume is
the cubic meter (m3). Aside from cubic meter, another commonly used metric unit for volume of
solids is the cubic centimeter (cm 3 or cc) while the commonly used metric units for volume of fluids
are the liter (L) and the milliliter (mL).

Here are the volume formulae of some regularly-shaped objects:

Example 3.8 Jia wants to give bottles of milk tea from her shop to frontliners in her
community. She was able to prepare 5 gallons of milk tea to be put in 16oz-bottles. How
many frontliners can receive a bottle of milk tea, assuming she gives only 1 bottle for each?

Solution: First you need to convert 5 gallons to fluid ounces. Then divide the result by
16.
128 fl oz
5 gal × =(5)(128) fl oz = 640 fl oz
1 gal

640 ÷ 16 = 40
Therefore, 40 frontliners will receive a bottle of milk tea from Jia.
Example 3.9 A rectangular in-ground pool is 45 feet long, 16 feet wide and 4 feet deep. How
many cubic meters of water does the pool hold?

Solution: In this problem, you can get the volume of the pool (a rectangular prism)
using the given measures then convert from cubic feet to cubic meters using the
conversion factor 1 cubic meter (m 3) = 35.3 cubic feet (ft3).

Volume of the pool = lwh = (45 ft)(16 ft)(4 ft) = 2880 ft 3

1 m3 2880
2880 ft3 × = 35.3 m3 = 81.59 m3
35.3 ft3

Therefore, the pool holds 81.59 m3 of water.

4. TIME
Listed below are the time relationships that you will need to convert units of time.
60 seconds = 1 minute 52 weeks = 1 year
60 minutes = 1 hour 365 days = 1 year
24 hours = 1 day 366 days = 1 leap year
7 days = 1 week 10 years = 1 decade
12 months = 1 year 100 years = 1 century
1000 years = 1 millennium

1 day 60
Solution: 60 hours × = days = 2.5 days
24 hours 24

Example 4.2 Convert 1.5 year to months.

12 months
Solution: 1.5 year × = (1.5)(12) months = 18 months
1 year

Example 4.3 It takes 3 hours to wash all the windows on a building. There are 30 windows.
How many minutes does it take to wash each window?

3
Solution: If it takes 3 hours to wash the 30 windows, then it takes or 0.1 hour to
30
wash each window. Convert 0.1 hour to minutes.
60 minutes
0.1 hour × = (0.1)(60)minutes = 6 minutes
1 hour

Therefore, it takes 6 minutes to wash each window of the building.
