Mr. Pomat, a Malupit shop owner, called a meeting to find out the views of the
community on local government plants to close the Malupit Community School at the end of
the present year.

Mr. Pomat acted as chairman of the meeting. He introduced Mr. K.Kazarin, the
planning Officer of the Raval Education Department. Mr. Kazarin pointed out that there were
now only fifty-three children at Malupit Community School. This was considered too high a
number for one class under one teacher; and too low a number for the forming of two
classes and the employment of two teacher. Mrs. Luvako, who had taught at the school for
the past twenty-two years, would be retiring from the teaching service in July. The Planning
Office wished to take this opportunity to close the school, because it is expensive to run,
and to move the children to two bigger school, because it is expensive to run, and to move

Mrs. Javis, the mother of an eight-year-old boy at Malupit, asked what would happen
about transport to Raval. Mr. Kazarin replied that the children would travel by bus. This
would be provided by Raval Transport Department, and it would take Malupit children to

Another parent, Mr.H.Willey, expressed the fear of many parent that closing the local
school would mean that the children of Malupit would not grow up with the same sense of
community as in the past. They would feel lost in the much larger school in Raval.

Mr. Kazarin replied that the Raval school were not very large, and that in any case,
the children would have to go to Raval later for education at high-school level.

The chairman voiced the view of the meeting when he said that there was good
reason to believe that there would soon be more young children living in Malupit.

It would be foolish, he said, to close the school, and then to find that there was good
reason to believe that there would soon be more young children to form two classes and
employ to teachers.

In 1921, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. It was given to him, not for his theories of
1
relativity, but for his discovery of the law_of the photoelectric effect. This scientific law explained
how and why some metals give off electrons after light falls on their surfaces. The discovery led
to the development of modern electronics, including radio and television.

Einstein was a famous man, but you would not have known that by looking at him. His
2 white hair was long and wild. He wore old clothes. He showed an inner joy when he was playing
his violin or talking about his work. Students and friends said he had a way of explaining difficult
ideas using images that were easy to understand. He died in 1955. He was seventy-six years old.

Albert Einstein taught in Switzerland and Germany. He left Germany when Adolph Hitler
3 came to power in 1933. He moved to the United States to continue his research. He worked at
the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Einstein became a citizen of the
United States in 1940.
Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany, in 1879. His father owned a factory that made
electrical devices. His mother enjoyed music and books. Albert was a quiet child who spent much
4 of his time alone. He was slow to talk and had difficulty learning to read. He also did not like
school. One story says Albert told his Uncle Jacob how much he hated school, especially
mathematics. His uncle told him to solve mathematical problems by pretending to be a
policeman. “You are looking for someone,” he said, “but you do not know who. Call him X. Find
him by using the mathematical tools of algebra and geometry.”

Albert learned to love mathematics. He was studying the complex mathematics of calculus
5 when all his friends were still studying simple mathematics. Instead of playing with friends he
thought about things such as: “What would happen if people could travel at the speed of light?”

Albert decided that he wanted to teach mathematics and physics. He attended the Federal
Polytechnic Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. He graduated with honors, but could not get a
6 teaching job. So he began working for the Swiss government as an inspector of patents for new
inventions. The job was not demanding. He had a lot of time to think about some of his scientific
theories.

Albert Einstein was a scientist who changed the way we understand the universe. In the
7 year 1905, he published some important papers in a German scientific magazine. They included
one of the most important scientific documents in history. It was filled with mathematics. It
explained what came to be called his “Special Theory of Relativity.” Ten years later he expanded
it to a “General Theory of Relativity.”Albert Einstein’s theories of relativity are about the basic
ideas we use to describe natural happenings. They are about time, space, mass, movement, and
gravity.

One evening last week my wife and I were sitting quietly at home. She was looking at the
television while I was reading a book. Suddenly we heard a loud bang. I supposed that the old lady in
the flat above ours was moving the furniture about. My wife was afraid that the noise would wake the
baby. She turned down the television and a moment later we heard someone calling for help.
I ran upstairs. The old lady’s door was shut but I could see smoke coming through the letter
box and under the door and could smell something burning. ‘The flat is on fire,’ I shouted down to my
wife. ‘Ring the fire brigade.’
I banged on the door but the old lady took a long time to answer. I was turning over in my
mind the idea of breaking the door down when she finally appeared.
‘I was having a bath,’ she said, ‘when the water heater in the kitchen blew up.’
‘Why didn’t you open the door?’ I asked her.
‘I was getting dressed when you knocked,’ she said, looking embarrassed.
I took her downstairs to our flat. Then I ran back, went inside the old lady’s flat and turned the
gas off to prevent another explosion. Smoke was pouring out of the kitchen and the heater was in
flames. Just then I heard a fire engine arriving outside and the heavy footsteps of the firemen on the
stairs. I looked round and noticed two of them standing in the doorway. ‘It’s in here,’ I said. ‘You
turned up promptly, I must say.
When I got back to our flat my wife was making the old lady a cup of tea. Soon afterwards, the
fire chief came in to ask some questions. It turned out that the fire was not very serious and the
firemen were already putting it out. When they left my wife went up with the old lady to help her clear
up the mess.
When she returned, my wife remarked: It’s all right now. Nothing was damaged except the
heater. But wasn’t it lucky that baby slept through all that noise?’ She took the teacups into the
kitchen and I heard her scream and the cup crash to the floor. When I got there, water was dripping
slowly the floor. The baby woke at last and started to cry. from the ceiling and forming a pool on

‘No,’the girl answered. ‘I do not see him.’
Strong Wind’s sister was surprised because the girl had told the truth. ‘Now do you
see him?’ asked Strong Wind’s sister.
‘Yes,’ answered the girl. ‘Now I do see him. He is magnificent.’
‘What is his bow made of?’ asked Strong Wind’s sister.
‘The rainbow,’ answered the girl.
‘And what is the bowstring made of?’ asked Strong Wind’s sister.
‘Of stars,’ answered the girl.

him because she had told the truth.
‘You really have seen him,’ said Strong Wind’s sister. Then the sister washed the girl,
and all the burns went away. Her hair grew long and black again. The sister dressed the girl
in fine clothes. Strong Wind came and the girl became his wife.
