Capitalizing Historical Events and Documents


Proper nouns are always capitalized. Proper nouns are words that
name a particular person, place, or thing. The names of important
historical events and documents are also proper nouns and should
be capitalized.

Action Verbs
An action verb tells what a person or thing does. An action verb
expresses an activity that a person or thing can do.

A strange object lands near the school.


It came from the sky.

 Lee eats cake.


("Eating" is something Lee can do.)
 The bear chased the salmon in the shallow rapids.
("Chasing" is something the bear can do.)
Compare those verbs with these:
 Lee likes cake.
("To like" is not an activity. It's a state.)
 The bear is hungry.
("To be" is not an activity. It's a state.)

Linking Verbs
A linking verb tells what someone or something is, or what
someone or something is like. Most linking verbs are forms of the
verb be.

Main Verbs and Helping
Verbs
Some verbs are more than one word. The main verb is the
most important verb. The helping verb comes before the main
verb.

A helping verb (also known as an auxiliary verb) is used with a main verb to
help express the main verb's tense, mood, or voice.

The main helping verbs are "to be," "to have," and "to do." They appear in
the following forms:
 To Be: am, is, are, was, were, being, been, will be
 To Have: has, have, had, having, will have
 To Do: does, do, did, will do
Write HV above each helping verb. Write MV above each main
verb.
