STAR-DELTA STARTER
 Introduction:
The star delta starter is circuitry technique primarily used to reduce the
flow of current at the start of a three-phase induction motor in order to
avoid sparking, overheating, coil burning, and other problems. It is
critical to understand how a star-delta starter reduces the starting
current of an induction motor. The concept is simple: the phase voltage
in the star connection is lower than in the delta connection.
So, basically, a star delta starter has both a star and a delta connection
arrangement, as well as a timer. As a result, when the motor is turned on,
it is connected to the Start connection. After a few seconds, which has
already been programmed into the timer, the motor will connect from the
star to the delta connection
So, during startup, the star connection helps to reduce the starting
current, and during operation, the delta connection helps to gather
enough torque and speed for the motor.
 Working principal of star delta
starter
a) Star state:
During the start-up of the star delta starter, the main contactor and
the star contactor remain closed, completing the power circuit. The
motor is connected in the star state during startup. In the star-
connected state, the voltage applied to the motor winding is
reduced to one-third of the line voltage.
When the motor reaches full speed, i.e. 90 percent of full R.P.M, the
timer connected in the circuit is activated. It first disconnects the
star contactor and then connects the delta contactor to the circuit,
implying that the delta contactor is closed.
b) Open state:
The circuit becomes open between switching from star to delta, and
the motor does not remain in either the star or delta state. This is
referred to as an open transition state.
C) delta state
When the timer was triggered, the motor switched from star to delta
mode. The phase voltage is equal to the line voltage in the delta
connection state. As a result, full line voltage is applied to the motor
winding, and the motor operates at full speed.

Why use star delta?

The phase voltage in the star connection is lower than in the delta
connection. Star configuration coil is 58 percent of delta configuration. A
lower voltage will lead to a lower current, Star configuration coil in 33
percent of delta.
So, basically, the star delta starter has both the star and delta connection
configurations, as well as a timer. As a result, the motor is connected to
the Start connection when it is turned on. The motor will connect from
the star to the delta connection after a few seconds, as predetermined by
the timer.
As a result, the star connection helps to reduce starting current during
startup, while the delta connection helps to gather enough torque and
speed for the motor during operation.

Star-delta Starter Consists following units

 Contactors
 Time relay (pull-in delayed)
 Three-pole thermal overcurrent release
 Fuse elements or automatic cut-outs for the main circuit
 Fuse element or automatic cut-out for the control circuit
 What happens if the motor is connected to the
Delta connection when it starts?

The secondary or rotor coil of an induction motor was always short-

circuited. So, if the motor is connected to the delta connection, it will
receive a very high voltage to the winding, and the motor will draw a very
high current, which may cause the coil to burn.
 What happens if the motor is always connected
to the Star Connection?

You may be wondering why you need to change the star to delta
connection; what happens if the motor is always run with the star
connection? We know that the speed and torque of an induction motor
are proportional to the square of the supply voltage. As a result,
increasing the supply voltage increases both speed and torque. As a
result, once the motor is started at normal speed, it switches to a delta
connection to gather data.

The advantages of Star Delta Starter

 Reduce the current flow at startup to avoid sparking, overheating,

and coil burning, among other things.
 It aids in gathering more speed and torque to the induction motor
during operation.
 Star Delta starters are best suited for large and powerful induction
motors.
 The star delta starter improves electrical safety and extends the life
of induction motors.

Mechanism
We run the circuit with a star connection, which is accomplished by
activating the main and star contactor terminals, causing them to
close to complete the circuit. When we pass electricity through the
circuit, it passes through each phase and coil, then out through the
motor terminals and into the star contactor but giving source
voltage. As the electrons' direction changes, they can flow into or
out of another phase. This will run for a few seconds before
transitioning to delta. We disconnect the star contactor and then
close the delta connection for the delta connection.
