BSN 1-A Ethics

ACTIVITY ONE - Why is Ethics considered to be “the only necessary knowledge”?

Ethics set a guiding path for the people to have a meaningful life that is anchored in
such principles that will help them to live accordingly. Explicitly, ethics help people to
achieve correct way of living and art as an expression of existence (living). Therefore,
the journey in life to be set correctly should have knowledge in ethics. As a living entity,
we should live the way it is and the manifestation of its fulfillment is through ethics.

ACTIVITY TWO - Are Ethics and religion one and the same? Decide with reasons.

Ethics is fact and Religion is faith. Ethics is a science and relies in solid evidences (or
things that can be perceived by our naked eye and empirical observation) while Religion
is set of beliefs and a symbolism of faith.

ETHICS RELIGION
1. Objective 1. Subjective
2. It has general basis 2. It has no general basis
(Dependable on which sect it belongs)
3. Duty of man towards the Supreme 3. Duty of man toward a religious
Being institution

ACTIVITY THREE - How are moral norms different from civil laws (e.g. criminal law)?

Moral norms have a specific definition and view on things regardless of while Civil laws
are dependable on the society it belongs, their beliefs and cultural norms. To point out,
not all considered legal in a society is moral by reason that cultural acceptance varies.

 In view of morality fairness, moral norms strictly adhere to the principles of

morality while civil laws somehow invalidate some morals as it is dependable
on the cultural beliefs or norms of a specific society.

ACTIVITY FOUR - What is the aim of Ethics?

The aim of ethics is to promote morality. It includes the purpose of guidance and
awareness to standardize the way of living to be appropriate and righteous.
ACTIVITY FIVE - Why are rules important to a social
RULES GUIDE being? What would happen if there are no rules in our
society?
EQUALIZE
Rules set the society in order and proper. It allows and
STABILIZE constraint peoples actions to promote unity and equality
in order to achieve harmonious living.

1. To guide people to the path of what is right and alleviate immoral actions to
prevent deterioration and recklessness.
2. Rules set standards to promote equal rights and opportunities to everyone.
3. In general, it stabilizes the flow of living by keeping the society in line towards
development.

Logically, if there are no rules, society will be put into ambiguity. Immoral acts might put
the essence of humanity into trash. By letting anyone to do what they want, with no
limitations, harmonious living will not exist.

ACTIVITY SIX - Based on your own experience, what rules do you find restricting? List
down five rules that restrict your freedom? Why?

1. Suspension of face to face classes. Well, it is considerable to understand the

situation we are having but the truth cannot be hidden by the conduct of online
classes or distance learning. My freedom to have physically attain social and
learning interaction have been limited and I found online class as not effective.
2. Payment of Educational Fees. Some are privileged and some are not, others can
enroll in a well-known university by their financial capability and chose the course
they want. I found it unfair that others can no longer continue their dreams in life
and forced to pursue other careers. It just negates the constitutional right of
everyone to have education.
3. Prioritization of courses in a scholarship program. To think that you badly need a
scholarship to support your schooling and your course or track is out of the
priority list is unfair. Some are forced to let go on their dreams and shift, and
some continue to strive their dreams being victimized by the unfair ruling of who
are the rightful to be a scholar.
4. Distribution of Social Amelioration Program (SAP) or Ayuda. Everyone should be
part of this program from the fact the everyone is affected by this pandemic. And,
favoritism is a big deal in this matter and causes inequality to everyone.
5. No return policy in some stores (especially in online transactions). Well, it is
clearly a validation of consumers right to avail products and services in good
condition and what is expected.
ACTIVITY SEVEN - Are all voluntary actions moral? Why?

For this, I need to stand in the point that all voluntary actions are moral given that in
order for an action to be called “voluntary” the doer should be conscious in the state of
making a decision. And in the application to the context, the ability of our mind to
recognize consciously what is right and wrong. Remember, that voluntary actions reflect
to human acts where these acts make an individual responsible and accountable for his
action.

ACTIVITY EIGHT – What is the complete definition of Ethics? Why is it necessary for
you to study this subject in college?

Ethics being so called “moral philosophy” deals with the study of the characteristics of
human behavior as being rational and free to apply morals. As a student it is important
to instill in our minds and in our actions, the importance of ethics and how it can;

1. Allows us to live an authentic and meaningful life.

2. Makes us more successful.
3. Allows us to cultivate inner peace.
4. Provide for a stable society.
5. Help out in the afterlife.

ACTIVITY NINE - Why is it that only human beings can be ethical?

Human beings possess a special ability to think rationally and consciously that other
beings do not have. These abilities enable human to make a moral judgement.

ACTIVITY TEN - Was there ever a time that you compromised your moral convictions?
How did you feel about it?

Yes. When there are two opposing view clashing in your mind making you doubt and
uncertain that would probably make you tired and feel unsure. The explosion of
conscience will gradually rise and makes you feel guilty in making conclusions having
presupposition of how it will end.

ACTIVITY 11 - Do you feel free in making moral decisions? Explain. What is the
importance of freedom in deciding morally?

Yes. In making moral decisions still, there are variations of concepts, perceptions and
idealism we have within. Freedom enables an individual to regulate his behavior in
such way that there will be congruency between what he is thinking and what he
feels. In that way, individual could have stable state of mind free from having guilt.
ACTIVITY 12 – Give four examples of MORES in your society and explain the moral
significance of each. Fill up the table below with the information needed.

ACTIVITY 13 – Recall five instances in your young life as a rookie college hopeful when
you made decisions primarily invoking reason and experience. List these instances
below and answer the questions that follow.

MY DECISIONS

BASED ON REASON ANCHORED ON EXPERIENCE

Choosing my course in college Choosing a state university

Changing my track in education Deciding to stay in the province for studies

Modifying my goals and dreams in Refusing to become an officer in a club or

life classroom

Beliefs that I should believe in Choosing right friends

Proving myself that I need to study Knowing what to improve in studies

and should pursue college

Queries:

1. When do you usually make decisions using your rationality (reason)?

I usually make rational decisions in times that I am envisioning or dreaming up

something that is for my own sake. It is a big part in crossing crucial turns in
life talking about long-tern goals and a permanent disposition in life.

2. When do you usually decide invoking your experience?

When it comes deciding through the use of my experience, these are times
that I need to make decisions again in the place I have been before. Cyclical
situation that requires you again to choose an option of whether to do the
same way again or try the other path.

3. What do you use more often in making decisions, reason or experience? Why?
I am more of being rational by the reason that I like to conceptualize things
from what I have learned and internalizing the capability of myself to do such
acts the are new and challenging at the same time. Of how you are going to
hold on the principles of you in life and know the outcome afterwards.

4. Were there instances when you thought you could have used reason better in
making a decision rather than your own experiences and vice versa? What are
those instances?

Yes. In instance that I need to decide again in the same situation I have been
through. And if that situation gave me a bad impression that I do not even
want to try it again. Out of my curiosity, what if I used my reasoning to again
motivate myself and exclude things that I have been experienced to overcome
and put that decision to a positive way.
