24 a) An organic compound (A) which has characteristic odour. On treatment with NaOH it 5
forms two compounds (B) and (C). Compound (B) has molecular formula C 7H8O which on
oxidation gives back (A). The compound (C) is a sodium salt of an acid. When (C) is
treated with soda lime it yields an aromatic hydrocarbon (D). Deduce the structures of (A)
(B), (C) and (D). Write the sequence of reactions involved.
b) p-Nitro benzoic acid has higher Ka value than Benzoic acid.
c) Draw the structure of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone of benzaldehyde

a)How will you carry out following conversions:

iii) Benzaldehyde to α- hydroxy phenyl acetic acid

b)How do you account for the following ?


i)The boiling point of aldehyde and ketone is lower than that of corresponding acids.

react in 2 hours? Calculate.

a) a)The rate of a particular reaction quadruples when temperature changes from 293K to
313K. Calculate the energy of activation of the reaction.Assuming that it does not
change with temperature. ( R=8.314JK-1mol-1)
b) What is meant by the rate constant ‘k’ of the reaction. Write the units of k for the first
order reaction.
c) Plot a graph rate vs concentration for zero order reaction .
