ANTONIO PIGAFETTA
WHO IS ANTONIO PIGAFETTA?
Antonio Pigafetta was born between 1480 and 1491 in

Vicenza, Republic of Venice. He died in 1531 (age

about 40–50). He was an Italian scholar and explorer,

and belonged to a rich family. He studied astronomy,

geography and cartography. He joined the expedition

to the Spice Islands led by Ferdinand Magellan under

the flag of King Charles I of Spain. He was also one of

the 18 men who made complete trip, returning to Spain

in 1522, under the command of Juan Sebastián

Elcano.

THE FIRST VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD (1519-1522)


An Account of Magellan's Expedition. One of the greatest

achievements in the history of navy exploration and

discovery. In this narration can be found descriptions of

peoples, countries, goods and even the languages that

were spoken, of which the seafarer was trying to assemble

some brief glossaries.

TO AMERICA AND AROUND THE WORLD


This book was published in 1-1-1990. It contains the daily

logs kept by Columbus—himself—and by Magellans’s

scribe, Antonio Pigafetta, on their fateful voyages to the

unknown Americas and subsequently around the world.

These voyages have unequivocally changed and

impacted on the western world like no other event

except for the advent of Jesus Christ.

THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS, 1493-1898, Volume 33, 1519-1522

Explorations by early navigators, descriptions of the

islands and their peoples, their history and records of

the catholic missions, as related in contemporaneous

books and manuscripts, showing the political,

economic, commercial and religious conditions of

those islands from their earliest relations with

European nations to the close of the nineteenth

century.

WHAT IS THE CONTRIBUTION OF ANTONIO PIGAFETTA IN PHILIPPINE


HISTORY?

-During the voyage Pigafetta served as Magellan's assistant and kept a journal accounting

everything that seemed fascinating and foreign to him. This journal would later be used as a

reference for many history related works. Pigafetta kept an extensive collection of data

gathered from the places that they have visited.

-He described historical events like the first Easter Day Mass celebrated in the Philippines and
the battle of Mactan, where Magellan was killed by Lapulapu's men. Pigafetta's eyewitness

account is the “most detailed and only surviving account” of this critical event in Philippine

history, says Escalante.

Pigafetta's work is important not only as a source of information about the voyage itself, but also
includes an early Western description of the people and languages of the Philippines.
