Answer the following questions:

Q.1 Describe the Non-Cooperation Movement started by Gandhiji. Why was it started?
Ans. The Jallianwala Bagh incident aroused Indians all over the country. A nationwide people’s
movement of non-violent resistance, called the Non-Cooperation Movement, was started and
led by Gandhiji in 1920. According to this movement, people were asked not to cooperate with
the British Government. People started breaking the laws deliberately like- leaving schools and
colleges run by the British, lawyers boycotting law courts, people leaving their government jobs
and protesting against shops selling British goods, etc.

Q.2 What was the Simon Commission? Why was it greeted with protests in India?
Ans. In 1927, the British government appointed a commission to look into the problems of the people of
India. It was headed by Sir John Simon and consisted of six other members, all belonging to the British
Parliament. There was not a single Indian member. The Indians took this as a humiliation. So, the Simon
Commission was greeted with protests in India under the leadership of Lala Lajpat Rai to boycott this
Commission by carrying out demonstrations with black flags and the slogan of ‘Simon, Go Back’ in which
he was badly injured and passed away.

Q.3 What was the condition of India when Gandhiji came to India in 1915?
Ans. On returning to India, Gandhiji became an important part of the Indian National Congress. He saw the
poor condition of the Indians under British rule and started working for India’s freedom. He was
disappointed to see the ill-treatment given to the lower caste people who were called untouchables by the
people of higher caste. The divide in the Indian society due to religion, caste, and gender was preventing
India from achieving freedom. Therefore, he started working on the social as well as the political front.

Q.4 Who gave the slogan ‘Tum mujhe khoon do main tumhe azaadi doonga.’? What was his role in
determining the freedom of India?
Ans. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose gave the slogan ‘Tum mujhe khoon do main tumhe azaadi doonga.’.
Netaji organized the Indian National Army with the help of the Japanese. He escaped from India in 1941
and organized the struggle against the British from outside India.

Q.5 When and why did Gandhiji conduct the Dandi March?
Ans. Gandhiji inaugurated the Civil Disobedience Movement on March 12, 1930, by conducting the Dandi
Salt March. By doing so, he broke the Salt Law imposed by the British Government on the Indians. According
to this law, Indians were not allowed to make salt from seawater and the British had complete control over

its manufacture. The Indians had to buy salt from the British at high prices. Gandhiji openly defied the law
and started the Dandi March to protest against the British government.
