Dr. Shereen El Feki began her speech by showing two dolls, Barbie and Fulla, to illustrate the cultural differences between Western and Islamic cultures. She used this example to introduce the concept of a "clash of civilizations" that can occur when differing cultures come into contact. Islamic cross-cultural hybridization involves blending Islamic culture with aspects of other cultures, such as Western culture, to create something new. Dr. El Feki argued that entities like the doll Fulla, TV channel 4Shbab, and comic book The 99 can help promote this hybridization and thus more effective intercultural communication by exposing cultures to each other in a blended form.

Assignment for Chapter 2

1. How did Dr. Shereen El Feki start her speech? What is her reason for presenting
Barbie and Fulla dressed up differently from one another?

Dr. Shereen El Feki started her speech first by greeting everyone and an
icebreaker by showing the audience two types of dolls.

By presenting the two dolls namely Barbie and Fulla, she wanted to explain the
difference in terms of culture between the two countries and how they would clash if
they came into contact.

2. What do you think is the meaning of “clash of civilization” as mentioned by Dr. El

Feki in the video clip?

Clash of civilization, as per the video clip, talks about the difference in interests
and values, it may also include religion, beliefs, and culture that can cause conflict
when two individuals having these differences meet and come into contact.

3. What is “Islamic cross-cultural hybridization”? Do you think Fulla, 4Shbab and

The 99 who represent the Arab pop culture are effective avenues in promoting the
enmeshing of strands of other cultures with their own? Support your answer with
specific details.

Islamic cross-cultural hybridization is a process in which Islamic people adapt

the culture of other countries, which is in the video clip a western culture, then mixing
or blending it with their own culture to create a new one.

For me, Fulla, 4Shbab and The 99 are effective avenues in promoting the
enmeshing of strands of other cultures with their own, first, for Fulla, even though it is
a doll and the idea is from a western culture, it is still dressed according to the culture
of Islam, as for the TV channel called 4Shbab, it adapts the music of USA which
promotes faith rather than the usual Arab music videos that contain matured contents,
and lastly, for the comic book The 99, it also adapts western civilization that contains
superheroes, and as mentioned in the video clip, Spiderman and Wonder woman
which are characters from USA will join forces with the said comic book.

4. What do you think is the implication of the “Islamic cross-cultural hybridization”

on effective intercultural communication?

Its implication on effective intercultural communication is that it promotes

understanding regarding cultural differences, and that adapting the culture of others
and blending it with our own culture will avoid clash of civilization. Through cross-
cultural hybridization, miscommunication among people with different cultures will
be avoided as well because there is a comparison and contrast about these cultures,
beliefs, attitudes, and the like.
