Concepts and people of a certain place which is considered
Practicing New special, aesthetic and artistic. In this lesson, you
Skills #1 are going to deal with the Middle East literature.
The greatest literature the Jewish people
produced is embodied in the Bible that is
divided into two sections-the Old and New
testament. It is a compilation of many literary
forms over many centuries but unified by the
truth of their divine inspirations. Their literature
is generally emotional, often passionate. Love of
God is an outstanding quality of Israel’s
literature. It differs from the literature of other
nations in that it believes in one God.

Listen to an audio story about Samson and

Delilah. After listening let’s answer some
questions about the story you listened.

Guide Questions:
1. Who is on the story?
2. Where did the story happen?
3. In the audio story you heard, who do you
think is the bad guy?

Short stories, novels, fictions and even poetry

have elements that are indispensable to reading
and writing. They are important components
that you need to understand in order to
comprehend or write a story better.
1. Setting
The setting of a short story is the time and place
in which it happens. Authors often use
descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings,
seasons or weather to provide a strong sense of
setting.
2. Character
A character is a person, or sometimes even an
animal, who takes part in the action of a short
story or other literary work.
There are two types of character: The
PROTAGONIST AND the ANTAGONIST
The protagonist is the good guy and the
antagonist is the bad guy in the story.
3. Conflict
The conflict is the problem or struggle in a short
story. There are two types of conflict:
EXTERNAL conflict and INTERNAL conflict.
1. External conflict means the problems or
struggles outside the main character
Examples: man versus man, man versus
nature, man versus government and others
 Man versus man is a conflict between the
characters in the story.
 Man versus nature is a conflict between man
and his environment.
 Man versus government includes any
opposition against the authority.
2. Internal conflict means the troubles within the
body and mind of the main character.
Man versus himself is an example of internal
conflict. This means that the main character has
a struggle within.
Example:
 In your studies, there are times you want to
quit because it is difficult but your other self tells
you to be patient and to keep on.
