SPIRITUAL BUT NOT RELIGIOUS

Some of us who write, think, and discuss about religion have had it with folks who
profess to be spiritual but not religious. A spiritual person has a natural and direct
connection with the divine or a higher force. He/she does not believe in the ideas
that current religious traditions have passed down to her, and he/she does not
participate in the ceremonial life of any organization. The crux of the problem is
the tension between religion and spirituality. While the majority of individuals
identify as "spiritual but not religious," there is also a rising tendency toward
religion without "spirituality": a deeply held belief system shaped by religion but
with little spiritual investment or personal contact with God. These increasing
developments in the other direction are far more subtle. Whether they recognize
it or not, a spiritual-but-not-religious individual is nevertheless practicing a form
of religion. It is in our nature as human beings to claim anything as our god and
worship it, whether it is a sports team, a pastime, an idea, nature, a political cause
or position, self-healing or self-reliance, health practices, a component of the
society, or even oneself they keep their focus on the Letter of the Law and forget
the Love of the Law.

RELIGIOUS BUT NOT SPIRITUAL

Religious-but-not-spiritual people are virtually indistinguishable from any other
"religious person" to the untrained eye; in fact, they appear to check all the boxes
from the outside. Every Sunday, you may see them during Mass. They've read all
of the appropriate devotionals. They ask for all of the appropriate prayers. They
even appear to be sacred. But, as you and I both know, it's not the outward
display of devotion that makes someone holy.and could have a superiority
complex. Rather than adopting a humble attitude, they are ready to point out
others' flaws and weaknesses. They are overly strict in their pursuit of justice and
quickly forget kindness. They are preoccupied with following rules to the letter
and concerned with respecting the law to the letter and attempting to measure
their own holiness. And passionate with details and are quite conservative.
However, their theology is inaccurate. Instead of developing a personal, tender,
loving, and merciful relationship with God, they find themselves leaving offerings
at the statue of a distant, cold, and rigid god for fear of being punished. The
religious-but-not-spiritual are ruled by a someone who is far too focused on
religious structures and rules. They are physically close to God, but not in soul.
