Spiritual But Not Religious
Some of us who write, think, and discuss about religion have had it with folks who
profess to be spiritual but not religious. A spiritual person has a natural and direct
connection with the divine or a higher force. He/she does not believe in the ideas
that current religious traditions have passed down to her, and he/she does not
participate in the ceremonial life of any organization. The crux of the problem is
the tension between religion and spirituality. While the majority of individuals
identify as "spiritual but not religious," there is also a rising tendency toward
religion without "spirituality": a deeply held belief system shaped by religion but
with little spiritual investment or personal contact with God. These increasing
developments in the other direction are far more subtle. Whether they recognize
it or not, a spiritual-but-not-religious individual is nevertheless practicing a form
of religion. It is in our nature as human beings to claim anything as our god and
worship it, whether it is a sports team, a pastime, an idea, nature, a political cause
or position, self-healing or self-reliance, health practices, a component of the
society, or even oneself they keep their focus on the Letter of the Law and forget
the Love of the Law.
