PELE

Edson Arantes do Nascimento also known as Pelé, is one of the greatest

footballers to have ever lived. Born on 23 October 1940 in a small town
of Brazil known as Sao Paulo where he grew up in poverty. The first
nickname he was ever given to Pele was Dico by his parents Dondihno
and Celeste Arantes. He was given the name Pele by some children as a
joke which meant nothing. This name stuck with him and soon became
one of the most recognizable names in the history of football. His father,
also a renowned footballer, was the one to teach Pele football when Pele
was just 11. In 1956 when Pele was just 15, an agent named Waldemar
de Brito saw Pele play with some of his friends and took him to Santos
to try out for the professional club FC Santos. In 1956 Pele got his first
contract for one of the most renowned clubs in Brazil, FC Santos where
he was earning 10 dollars a month and he made a huge impact with his
football skills. In 1957 when pele was just 16 years old, he got selected
to play in the Brazilian football team. Pele’s football style was famously
known as Ginga. It is a primitive style of playing football. The
Portuguese arrived in Brazil with African slaves. But the Africans' will
was strong and they managed to escape to the jungle. To save
themselves, they started to learn Capoeira, the martial art of war. They
turned this martial art of war Capoeira into a football style called the
Ginga. Ginga was a very rough playing style criticized by the Europeans
who played a more sophisticated style of football. The coach of the
Brazil football team and many players were against playing Ginga style
football because of the rough style of playing. Pele was the one who
showed the world how good the Ginga style of football is, and he was
one of the main reasons why the world recognized Ginga as a style of
football. Although new generation players like Neymar Jr, Ronaldinho,
Lucas Moura still play Ginga style, but no one could match the way Pele
used to play Ginga style. Pele won his first world cup at the age of 17
where he played a significant role for the national team, and he was the
youngest world cup winner. After winning the world cup, Pele got many
offers from many prestigious European football clubs, but he could not
leave Brazil due to the law. After that Pele won 3 FIFA world cups in
1962, 1970 and 1958 which is the most world cup won by any player.
Pele has many records under his name like Brazil’s top goal scorer, most
career goals scored ever which is 1283 goals in 2363 games, Pele has
most hat tricks ever which are 92 hat tricks which accounts for 21.5
percent of all goals he has scored in his career. He is the youngest player
to score a hat trick at the age of 17. After that Pele became one of the
most recognizable names in football and Brazil. He won numerous
awards with his football club Santos like Copa Libertadores,
Intercontinental Cup. Supercopa de Campeones Internacionales (1968),
and many, many more. He was also one of the best players in the world
cups he participated in, receiving the Silver Boot, Silver Ball, and
Golden Ball. As well as the all time leading scorer with 77 goals in the
national team. i. With a record high of 40 official titles and a few more
runners up titles, Pele without a doubt was considered as the greatest
footballer of all time. He was even declared a national treasure in 1961
by President Janio Quadros of Brazil. At the end of his career, he was
known as “The Black Pearl” or “The King Pele” due to his contributions
to football and his stats. He was given the player of the century award in
1999. In the same year, Pele was elected as the Athlete of the century by
the International Olympic Committee and Reuters News Agency. Pele is
also acknowledgeable for his vocal support of policies to improve
conditions for the poor. He even dedicated his 1000th goal to the poor
children of Brazil. Even after retirement, Pele was still around serving as
a worldwide ambassador and has taken many roles for participating in
FIFA events such as promotions for the world cup. Pele has also written
an autobiography that beautifully describes his life struggles and how he
overcomes them. A movie has also been made about him which was
released in 2021. Pele retired from all football on 1 October 1977 at the
age of 36.
