as OPEN Forum. Having been involved in it for the past year now, I have a new

Welcome to the 8th Annual OPEN Forum in Silicon Valley. Over the
years OPEN has brought thought leaders together to share with our
members about what is shaping our careers, lives and the world
around us. This year is no exception.
The theme this year is LAUNCH - a word that captures the current spirit in Silicon
Valley. Spring is here and the recession is over - look around you and optimism looms
everywhere. The time of banking crises, stock market crashes, and bursting real
estate bubbles is ending and we hold in our hands the seeds of renewal. People are
ready to launch their startups, their careers, and many fresh graduates are ready to
launch their professional lives.

Today OPEN Forum 2011 presents a multi-track program that will bring thought
leaders and opinion makers as keynote speakers and panelists covering both
entrepreneurial and professional development aspects. The half-day Youth track
focuses on Generation Y and features panels and workshops that can help decide
the upcoming generation on choosing a path that matches their ambitions and
exposes them to some of the ways to make these choices.

The Annual OPEN Forum is the biggest event that OPEN SV puts together and is a
product of over 100 volunteers including a core committee of 15 who devote their
time and resources to make this event a memorable and transforming experience
for all. I thank our volunteers who have worked tirelessly for several months - without

About OPEN
The Organization of Pakistani Entrepreneurs (OPEN) was launched in 1999 as a
voluntary, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of entrepreneurship
and leadership in the Pakistani-American business community. Over the years OPEN
has grown with chapters now in Boston, Houston, New York, Chicago, Silicon Valley,
and Washington DC. The OPEN Silicon Valley community is several thousand-strong,
and includes corporate professionals, entrepreneurs “venture capitalists, banking
professionals” social leaders, academics and students.

Join OPEN
Become a member of the OPEN Silicon Valley community! Here you will find an
entire network of entrepreneurs and professionals that will help you in achieving your
professional goals. This is done through regular mentoring sessions, networking
events, and skills and leadership development workshops throughout the year.

All OPEN members are encouraged to lead, create, and participate in programs that
are delivered each year to the community. Those who have demonstrated years of
service are often invited to become part of the Executive Committee and they set the

Year at a Glance (2010-2011)

Women Leadership Forum 2011: Optimize Your Effectiveness - An annual conference
dedicated to women’s empowerment in the workspace. The one day conference
designed exclusively for women, by women from the community had over 150
attendees.

Streetline Inc.; Arif Janjua Managing Director at the Boston Consulting Group

Mentorship Breakfast
OPEN Silicon Valley Monthly Breakfasts is an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurs
and industry professionals to meet with experts in their respective field. The event is
conducted in a relaxed, informal setting, where participants can build relationships
and gain valuable business and career feedback.

Participants are asked to deliver a 30 to 60 second elevator pitch, and the guest
mentor provides immediate feedback, enabling fast, effective, accessible mentoring
and relationship development. Participation in Monthly Breakfasts is available to to all

Aaref A. Hilaly
President & CEO, Clearwell
Zero to $400m: Building an Enterprise From Scratch:
In his 11-year career in Silicon Valley, Aaref has helped to create and sell two software
companies collectively worth close to half a billion dollars. Most recently, as President
and CEO of Clearwell, he grew the company from a handful of engineers at the early
stages of product development into a high-growth, profitable company with over
$50 million in annual revenue. Clearwell is the leading provider of electronic discovery
software, with over 400 customers and 75 partners in 14 different countries. On May
19, 2011, Symantec announced that it would acquire Clearwell for $410 million. The
transaction is expected to close in July.

Prior to Clearwell, Aaref was Founder and CEO of CenterRun, which he led from
inception in 2000 to its acquisition by Sun Microsystems for $66 million in August
2003. CenterRun was a leading provider of application provisioning software and
today forms the basis of Sun’s data center automation product suite.
Aaref earned an MBA from Harvard Business School with high distinction as a Baker
Scholar. He holds a BA Honor’s degree from Oxford University, and a Master’s degree
from McGill University, where he was awarded the Arthur Tagge Fellowship. While a
full-time student, he completed internships at Linklaters, Slaughter and May, and the
UN Center For Human Rights in Geneva.

Raymie Stata
Chief Technology Officer, Yahoo! Inc.
Technologies Catalyzing Digital Media:
Technical forces are converging to unlock the true potential of Digital Media. Tablets
provide an immersive canvass for interactive experiences that captivate users of
all ages. The proliferation of smart phones and connected televisions, allows us to
connect to users in every possible context. And all of these screens are connected
via a smart, big-data cloud that supports continuous, contextual, personalized

programming. So what are the big bets being placed to support the next wave of
digital media? How are innovative new native / HTML5 hybrid app development
approaches and video technologies enabling rich consumer experiences and
increasing personalization? Raymie Stata will talk about the frontiers of Digital Media
and demonstrate some new user experiences coming out of Yahoo!’s research labs.

Raymie Stata is Chief Technology Officer of Yahoo!. He is responsible for the company’s
technical strategy and long-term direction and plays a hands-on role translating that
strategy into execution. Over the years, Stata has held a number of roles at Yahoo!,
in which he helped initiate the Hadoop project, provided leadership for Search, and
was the founding architect for Yahoo!’s display advertising platform.

Before Yahoo!, Stata founded Stata Laboratories, maker of the Bloomba search-
based e-mail client, which Yahoo! acquired in 2004. He also worked at Digital’s
Systems Research Center, and at UC Santa Cruz. He is an inventor on over a dozen
patents, and author of numerous technical papers. Stata received his Ph.D. in
Computer Science from MIT in 1996.

Wendy J. Chamberlin
Former US Ambassador to Pakistan and
President Middle East Institute
Pushing the reset button on US Pakistan Relations - How Business could
lead the way:
Events in 2011 have marked a low level of bilateral distrust between our two nations.
The current political debate obscures the real source of Pakistan’s strength - its
middle class, its entrepreneurial technocrats and its youth. There are lessons from
the Arab Spring that could apply to Pakistan. Pakistan’s diaspora businessmen
are well positioned to play positive role. What policies and programs could the US
government adopt to enable development.

Wendy Chamberlin has served as President of the Middle East Institute since March
2007. She previously served as Ambassador to Pakistan (2001) and to the Lao
Peoples Democratic Republic (1995-98). She was the Deputy High Commissioner
for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (2004-2006). She served as Assistant
Administrator for the Asia Near East Bureau in USAID from 2002 until she retired
from the US diplomatic service in 2004. Ambassador Chamberlin is on the Board of
Directors of the American Academy of Diplomacy, The Hollings Center, and the Sultan
Qaboos Cultural Center. She is a graduate of Northwestern University. Chamberlin
has a MS in Education from Boston University and participated in the Executive
Program at Harvard University. She also holds an honorary PhD from Northwestern
University and meritorious awards from the US State Department.

Paths Less Traveled – Conquering New Frontiers:

Come and be inspired by Faran Tahir as he shares his journey and experiences as he
charted his way to success in a non-traditional career. He has a refreshing perspective
that can provide invaluable ideas for people at all stages of their lives and how they
can reinvent their careers.

Faran Tahir is a third generation Pakistani/American actor who has shown his talents
equally in film, television and theater. His most recent film credits include the vicious
villain, Raza, in the 2008 Marvel live action blockbuster, Iron Man, starring alongside
Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow and Terence Howard. In 2009, he
followed the success of Iron Man with another super hit, Star Trek, as the dashing
and heroic Federation Captain. The casting marks a historic moment in the Star Trek
saga and for him as well. He played the first Federation Captain of South Asian/
Middle Eastern ethnicity. Tahir’s vast television resume includes over 40 television
appearances. He has been seen as guest leads in notable shows like Lost, Chuck,
NYPD Blue, NCIS, NCIS- Los Angeles, Cold Case, The West Wing, Warehouse 13
etc. Faran also plays a lead role in Shoieb Yunus’ feature film Two Mothers (now in
post-production).

Faran graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a BA in Theatre

before acquiring a graduate degree from Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced
Theatre Training.

iPad and similar devices have made tablets mainstream and hold the promise of a
new age of entertainment.

This panel will focus on the entertainment aspects of tablets, rather than business
related applications.The compactness of tablets, together with wireless connectivity
and location-based functionality all combine to create a new set of opportunities
and challenges for entrepreneurs and industry incumbents alike. Consideration will
also be given to opportunities in the larger non-tablet, global mobile entertainment

Faraz Hoodbhoy is a 3rd generation entrepreneur with unparalleled experience in the Pakistan-
Silicon Valley corridor. With 15 years of global business experience gathered in over 40
countries, Faraz is, most recently, the founder of PixSense. PixSense is a successful
mobile social media business with deployments across the globe including Indonesia,
Malaysia, Norway, Vietnam, and the Philippines. With significant operating experience
gathered in Silicon Valley, Faraz has raised over $15m in venture capital as a Silicon Valley
entrepreneur. His career spans multiple functional roles from software and product design
and development, to business development and sales, to executive management.

An expert in mobile and imaging software, Faraz continues to contribute to professional

and trade publications and co-authored one of the first books on XML, “Applied XML – A
Toolkit for Programmers” (John Wiley & Sons).

Shahid Khan (Chairman and Chief Strategist at MediaMorph)

Shahid Khan is a recognized thought leader in the media industry. His track record
includes launching digital media and mobile initiatives for a wide spectrum of media and
entertainment companies – from broadband, mobile and cable television to eBooks and
digital music. Prior to joining Mediamorph, Shahid was a Senior Partner at IBB Consulting
Group. Among his clients were Sony Entertainment, Scholastic, Disney, Hearst, IAC,
Showtime, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and Comcast. Shahid has also held executive
positions at BearingPoint/KPMG Consulting and IBM Global Services. He holds an MBA
from New York University and is a Fellow at the Wharton School of Business. He is often
invited to speak at leading industry conferences and is widely quoted in the press on
industry issues.

Omar Javaid (Vice President, Motorola Mobility)

Omar Javaid is Vice President, Converged Experiences and Advanced Platforms. In this
role, he is charged with developing the multi-screen strategy and products for Motorola
Mobility.

Previous to his current post, Omar was the managing director of BBO Global, a leading
advisory and venture firm in the wireless and media space. At BBO, he advised senior
executives at leading media, telecommunications, and technology companies on
transformational products, technology trends, acquisitions, and restructuring activities.
Mr. Javaid was a successful executive and entrepreneur, bringing more than 15 years
of technology and entrepreneurial experience in the Telecommunications, Media, and
Internet industries with leading firms such as Qualcomm and Deloitte. Omar holds degrees
in chemistry and cellular & molecular biology from the University of Michigan.

Faisal is co-founder and CEO at Offermatic. He got the idea for Offermatic when he was
using his favorite personal finance website to review his finances. While his personal
finance tool sent him occasional deals on various financial products, he wanted deals &
offers on everyday purchases. Offers that were targeted to him and linked directly to his

Given his background as an online marketing entrepreneur, Faisal realized he could build
a service to help consumers save money while helping retail merchants to stop wasting
money on poorly targeted marketing campaigns.
Prior to starting Offermatic, Faisal founded a couple of other online marketing ventures
– beginning in 2005 with his first entrepreneurial venture called TellAPal. Before being
bit by the entrepreneurial bug, he worked as a product line marketing manager at Sun

Social media has changed the manner in which we communicate, share and
consume content. The change has been equally transformative when it comes
to social and civic impact in societies around the world. The Arab Spring of 2011
has demonstrated the power and influence of Facebook and Twitter in organizing,
mobilizing and sustaining movements. Natural disasters such as the 2010 floods in
Pakistan and the earthquake and tsunami in Japan show us the power of the new
medium in generating support from across the globe. Did Facebook and Twitter lead
to the movements in Egypt and Tunisia or simply enable them? How does the digital
divide render some segments of the populations unreachable through social media?
How must traditional media adjust in the wake of the rise of social media? Our panel
will examine these questions and address others from experiences in news, media,
social web and emerging markets.

Barack Obama appointed Dilawar to the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian
Americans. The Commission advises the President on education, entrepreneurship, civil
rights and sustainability policy. As the Commission’s Economic Growth Chair, Dilawar
drives engagement with the Asian American entrepreneur community across the country.
In 2008, Gov. Howard Dean appointed Dilawar National Co-Chair of the Democratic
National Committee’s South Asian Leadership Council. Dilawar is past president of OPEN
Silicon Valley and is steering committee member of the Korematsu Institute for Civil Rights
and Education.

Chef Brandon Arnovick (Founder of Mission Minis)

Chef Brandon Arnovick is the founder of Mission Minis, a gourmet mini cupcake bakery
that bakes fresh cupcakes daily in San Francisco. Inspired by his love for food, he caters
to every sweet tooth in the Mission District and beyond by opening the first mini cupcake
bakery to the food friendly neighborhood. Music producer by day, Food Network devotee
by night, Arnovick has always cooked for the bands, artists and friends who come through
his home and studio. He eventually landed his own appearance on Food Network when
he competed to have his cupcake featured at a launch for the LA Kings hockey season.
Mission Minis has set out to create one specialty - the mini cupcake - and does it really

Jennifer Anastasoff is President of EnCorps. She has significant experience engaging
the corporate sector in pro-bono projects as well as in education. In her capacity as
CEO of BuildingBlocks International (BBI), a San Francisco-based nonprofit that is
working with multinational corporations to develop what Business Week calls a corporate
“Peace Corps,” she created the corporate and programmatic infrastructure to support

David Weekly (Founding Director of HackerDojo)

A Boston native and son of a MIT engineer, David has been programming since he was
five and has coded for MIT, Harvard, Stanford, There.com, atWeb, and Legato. David
wrote the first layman’s description of MP3 in early 1997 and graduated in 2000 with a BS
in Computer Science from Stanford, where he was a President Scholar and a finalist in the
ACM International Programming Competition.
David started the company that became [PBworks] in 2003, along the way creating
SingleStat.us and IMSmarter.
David is a Founding Director of Hacker Dojo, a non-profit community center aimed at
providing programmers in the SF Bay Area a place to collaborate and innovate. This
largely came out of David’s efforts as the co-founder of SuperHappyDevHouse, a monthly
hackathon whose 40+ Saturday gatherings of upwards of 600 programmers have
produced many projects, companies, and friendships.

Mike Hodges (Managing Director of ATA Ventures)

Mike Hodges joined ATA Ventures in 2006 and became a Managing Director in 2008. Mike
has built a reputation as a successful CEO and interim CEO and is credited with several
successful turn–around efforts, including Tellium, a Telecom Networking company that
began as a technology spinout from Bellcore in 1997 (Tellium completed a public offering
of $1.5B in 2001). Mike provides expert support to the ATA Venture’s comprehensive
portfolio of companies, as well as seeking new investments for the firm’s current and future

Naeem Zafar started out as an engineer, with a degree in electrical engineering, an IEEE
membership card, and not much else. Within a few years, he was enjoying management
titles and had zigzagged throughout the organization to become president and CEO. What
mistakes did he make and what did he learn from them? Today, as a part of the business
school faculty at University of California Berkeley, he advises entrepreneurs and works with
young professionals on what to do to accelerate their dreams. He has authored five books

and CEO title 4 times and is currently running www.bitzerMobile.com, his latest venture.

Zahra Siddique (Founder of Ezahra)
Zahra Siddique, a sophomore at Calhigh in San Ramon. She is very active in entrepreneurial
activities since the age of 12. First she built Ezahra to start selling online children’s novelty
school supplies, goodie bags and gift baskets. Later she started first of its kind club at
her school called “Investeen” to promote entrepreneurial and investment activities among
other teenagers, which is now become part of an international organization called DECA,
where she has become the treasurer of her chapter.
Check out the story about her club activities in local news paper San Ramon Patch and in
a popular blog. Zahra is an active Toastmaster and runs her club meetings in Pleasanton
regularly. She also manages IEEE ComSoc-SCV activities page, and volunteers at OPEN,
Walk for Cancer,Spread Kindness, Interact and several other organizations where she
provides active support. Last year during her summer vacation, she helped a new local
restaurant to organize their Grand Opening ceremony where she single handedly invited
congressmen, state senator, Mayors and city & county officials and other dignitaries,
which was very successful and attended by almost 150 people from the Tri-City area. The
coverage was done in local papers.

Aisha Thiessen (Artist and Webcomic Creator)
Aisha Thiessen is the creator of the site Catching Dreams. After graduating from the
University of Colorado at Boulder in May 2010, with a BFA in Film Studies and BA in
English, she moved to Silicon Valley to pursue reimagining and relaunching a webcomic
she started in high school. Not only does this involve writing and illustrating the comic
itself, but developing the website, marketing the product, and managing the community.
She hopes the comic’s popularity will pull in revenue through ads and merchandise, and, if
it really is successful, eventually launch her career in the entertainment industry.

Jabez Le Bret (Entrepreneur and Speaker -Creating Gen Y Leaders)

Jabez’s career story started with his first corporate job…elf at Santa lane in downtown
Seattle at the flagship Nordstrom store. He took this job, moved his way up the ladder, and
became financial analyst of that very flagship store. Since then he has traveled the world
as a professional speaker, written books, and had a blast as a marketing consultant. You

has failed, lost money, and missed opportunity. That never stopped him from continuing

Wajahat Ali (Playwright, Attorney)

Wajahat Ali is a Muslim American of Pakistani descent. The Domestic Crusaders is his first
full-length play. which premiered in 2005 at the Thrust Stage of the Berkeley Repertory
Theater and San Jose University Theater. In 2009, The Domestic Crusaders premiered
Off-Broadway in New York at the famous Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and broke their box office
records during its historic 5 week run.
Ali’s essays and interviews on contemporary affairs, politics, the media, popular culture
and religion frequently appear in the Washington Post, The Guardian, Salon, Slate,
McSweeney’s,Wall Street Journal Blog, Huffington Post, and, CNN.com, among other
on-line sites. His blog, “Goatmilk: An Intellectual Playground” is ranked in the top 7% of all
political blogs by blogged.com.
Wajahat Ali is a researcher and writer for the Center for American Progress focusing on
Islamophobia in America. Ali was honored as an “An Influential Muslim American Artist”
by the State Department and invited to their 2008 and 2010 Annual Ramadan dinners.
He was named a “Muslim Leader of Tomorrow” for his journalism work and invited to
participate in the 2009 conference in Doha, Qatar. He is the recipient of Muslim Public
Affairs Council’s prestigious “Emerging Muslim American Artist” recognition of 2009.
Wajahat Ali is also an Attorney at Law, practicing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Wajahat
Ali is the proud recipient of the 2010 Otto Award for Political Theater.
Wajahat is currently writing a TV pilot with Dave Eggers for HBO about a Muslim American
cop in the Bay Area, California

Vikas Khanna (Managing Director, Zoovee Ventures)

Vikas Khanna is the Managing Director of Zoovee Ventures – a boutique angel investing
and consulting services firm based in Silicon Valley. Prior to founding Zoovee, Vikas was
part of the founding team of NextWeb – a VC-backed Wireless Internet Service Provider
where he was tasked with leading the technology strategy for the company. During his
tenure, NextWeb grew to dominate its market segment, achieve national recognition as
an Inc 500 (#104 in 2005) company, and delivered a successful exit with the acquisition
by Covad Communications in 2006. At Covad, Vikas served as the Vice President of
Technology where he provided guidance for the company’s overall technology growth.
In addition, he also serves on advisory boards for venture capital, Internet, Telecom, and
non-profit organizations in Silicon Valley.

films, documentaries, mobile media, social media, and other technologies. Presenters
at his FMA meetings have included Oscar winners and Oscar nominees. Local success
has led Brad and his team to launch a new FMA LA branch in Southern California this
summer. He’s a serial global entrepreneur and networker with partnerships in Poland,
the United States, and other regions. He loves to network and make connections that
