adjunct to the management of
respiratory disease. Nebulization
involves using compressed air
through a ‘nebulizer’ to convert
liquid medications into a mist that
can then be breathed in by the
patient. Different nebulizers
produce mists with differing
particle sizes. The particle size
produced is very important,
because the larger the particles,
the sooner they drop out of
suspension in the mist and
therefore the less far into the
respiratory tract they are able to

listen.
There are 3 types of nebulizers.
Each system produces medicated
aerosol in a slightly different way
to deliver these particles deeply
into the lungs. Other differences
between these types of nebulizers
is their efficiency and the amount
of medication they deliver to the
lungs. The types are:

OBJECTIVE G
LEARNING
ACTIVITY
a) Jet nebulizers use compressed
gas to make medicated mist. It
breaks down the solution into
small droplets, measuring 1 to 5
micrometers, which a patient can
easily inhale.

b) Ultrasonic nebulizers use

ultrasonic sound waves to create
a vibration that breaks down the
liquid into tiny particles. The
particles delivered by ultrasonic
nebulizers are larger, but more
uniform in size compared to
those delivered by jet nebulizers.

c) Vibrating Mesh or Membrane

Nebulizers: As the liquid passes
through multiple holes in the
mesh, the vibrating action
generates medicated aerosol.
Mesh nebulizers produce
consistent aerosol particles that
reach deep into the lungs.
Patients may prefer mesh
nebulizers because these devices
are fast, quiet, portable, and easy
to use.

5. Provide semi-fowler’s position

6. Monitor the heart rate before the

cause tachycardia & palpitation.
7. Clean the mask with wet swab

8. Clean the connecting tube with

9. Add prescribed amount of
medicine and normal saline in
the chamber.
10. Connect the tubing to the
compressor, set the prescribed
flow (6-8 L/min), check for the
mist formation.
11. Position the mask to the patient’s
face, ask the patient to take deep
breaths, hold the breath briefly
and then exhale for optimum
dispersion of medication, if the
child can comprehend.
12. Provide diversional therapy to
keep the child calm.
13. Monitor the condition of the
patient, check for finishing of the
medication which generally
takes about 10-15 mins.
14. After completion of the
medication, remove the mask
and give comfortable position to
the patient and wipe face with
dry swab.
15. If possible, encourage the child
to cough. Expectorant to be
disposed properly.
16. Monitor vitals of the child and
record it. Record the procedure
and description of secretion.

18. Mask is generally reused for
same patient. It is wiped in the
inner side with saline water and
outsides and tubing with spirit
cotton. It is then wrapped in a
clean gauze piece and stored in
dry covered place.

secs
Nebulization is the process of
medication administration via
inhalation. Nebulization therapy is
used to deliver medications along the
respiratory tract and is indicated to
various respiratory diseases like
Bronchospasm, excessive & thick
mucus secretions, pneumonia, etc. In
this procedure, medication is diluted
and the aerosol delivered to the lungs
by inhalation through mask.
30
secs  CONCLUSION:

Nebulization takes place as a result

of the disruption of the liquid by the
expanding vapour that is formed
upon evaporation of part of the
liquid in the tube. Through
nebulization particles of 1–5 microns
(μm) penetrate into the narrow
branches of the lower airways
making the medication deeply
penetrable and effective in a
comparative short span of time.
