CITY-BASED FISHERFOLK RIDE TO RECOVERY THRU DA-BFAR IX FISH SNACK CART AND

URBAN AQUAPONIC PROJECTS

DA-BFAR IX affirmed its commitment in uplifting the lives of Zamboangueñ o

fisherfolk by donating four (4) units of Urban Aquaponics project under Bayanihan II
Fishery Livelihood Intervention Program, and three (3) units of fish snack carts project,
under Bayanihan I, through the Agricultural Field District Offices of Tumaga, Culianan, and
Manicahan. The representatives have undergone a short pre-orientation and hands-on
preparation on the aquaponics system. Among the selected beneficiaries are the “Kids Who
Farm” and the “Mampang Women’s Federation” who personally received the provisions at
the BFAR compound last August 11, 2021.

The recipients were bequeathed a set of aquaponics paraphernalia that comprises a

hydro plot and frame with fish tank, 1 pack of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seed, 1 pack of
Kangkong (Ipomoea aquatic) seed, 66 pcs of perforated plastic cups 7 0z., 10 kilos of coco
peat, 5 kilos coco coir, 10 kilos carbonized rice hull, and 1 pc of seedling tray, 100 pcs Red
Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings and 100 pcs Get Excel Tilapia (Oreochromis
niloticus) fingerlings. Moreover, 1 unit of solar submersible pump 12V 20W, 1 unit of solar
panel 200W monocrystalline, 1 pc of solar power connector (MC4), 1 pc led light 12V 5W,
10-meter electrical wire 5mm (Black and red) 1 unit of solar charge Controller 12-24V
100A, and Gel Type Battery 12V 65AH.

The aforementioned interventions were spearheaded by Regional Director, Isidro M.

Velayo, Jr., MDM, OIC-Chief FAD, Ms. Liliosa R. Paredes, and together with City Fishery
Officer-Zamboanga City, Dr. Bonifacio M. Duterte Jr., OIC-Chief Fisheries Production
Division, Marlon B. Dagandan. The Agriculture District Officers and Fishery Technicians
graced and witnessed the turn-over ceremony.

Given the imposition of Covid-related quarantine lockdowns, pushing greater

pressure on the region’s food security, DA-BFAR are finding more innovative ways to
bolster income opportunities for fisherfolk stakeholders residing in urban areas. The
pandemic is particularly overwhelming to the day-to-day livelihoods of artisanal fishers in
Zamboanga City where a surge of the virus and its new variant is spiralling anew.

The Urban Aquaponics Project is a pioneering technology that combines concepts of

aquaculture and hydroponic to allow fish and vegetables to grow together in an integrated
system that is small enough in size that can fit on cramped household spaces in congested
urban areas. Aquaponics is one of the DA-BFAR’s newest projects to ensure sustained food
production in densely populated urban communities as the nation adopts into the “new
normal” in the midst of CoVID-19 pandemic.

The Fish Snack Cart Project, on the other hand, is a mobile store business model
aimed to enable urban-based fisherfolk to sell their value-added fishery commodities in the
local market thereby providing them additional earnings to combat the difficulties of the
ongoing health crisis in the city.
