Haley Davis Thematic Analysis
INTRODUCTION opportunity to discover the qualities that have shaped me into who I
am. A collection of data from previous course work will be
analyzed to further build on the experiences of my life both
professionally and personally.
RESEARCH PROCESS AND METHODS
Before starting my analysis, I reviewed my previous coursework to collect data that
was most impactful to me. My next step was to review the assignment details and I
made notes of ideas and questions that came to mind. Some of my notes were:
What has been my true motivation?
Career and opportunity
Stability
Do I value my career/education/personal success more than family? Why?
I started with these broad ideas and questions and began to narrow them down into
smaller themes that I most closely resonated with.
My data sources are coming from all of the courses that I have taken at
Arizona State University. I am utilizing essays, reflection papers,
assessments, presentations (group and individual), and videos/TEDTalks to
outline my themes. Comparing my coursework to my life experiences will
help me form connections and better understand myself as well as
understand how I can improve myself on a personal and professional level.
DATA SOURCES
DATA SOURCES
Life Story Personal Narrative (LSPN) – This essay required me to construct an in-depth narrative story of my life to include experiences,
memories, and all that got me to where I am today. This essay helped to identify many themes that I am characteristic of in my
everyday life.
DISC Personality Test (DISC) – This assessment required me to select two responses from several statements. One response was based
on which was the most closely related to my personality, and one was least related to my personality. This generated a score within
four categories of dominance, influence, steadiness, and compliance.
Motivation and Career Anchors Test (MCA) – This assessment required me to choose the best answers to a large set of questions. The
answers were on a 1-10 scale of importance, 10 being very important and 1 being not important. My score was compiled into several
categories such as security, autonomy, technical, managerial, etc and from there, I was able to determine my two most important
anchors.
Kuder Career Interests Test (KCI) – This assessment required me to select the best answers to a series of questions. My answers
determined my ASI which indicated which categories I resemble most. These categories are as follows: realistic, artistic, enterprising,
investigative, social, and conventional.
Kuder Skills Confidence Test (KSC) – This assessment required me to determine the best answers to a series of questions. A score was
then presented with my S/E/C code representative of which categories I am most characteristic: realistic, artistic, enterprising,
investigative, social, and conventional.
Human Metrics Test (HM) – This assessment required that I choose statements best fitting my personality. At the end, my score was
generated based on my likeness to 16 different personality traits.
After a review of my selected data sources and a
deeper look into myself, I have determined 10 life
themes. These themes have developed throughout my
life and are still changing/developing now. These life
MY 10 THEMES
themes have been formed by my family, upbringing,
relationships, my education, career, and goals.
THEME 1: RELATIONSHIPS
Theme Statement: Engaging in healthy relationships that support my future and add value to my life is a vital theme
in my life.
Supporting Data:
Being an introvert, it has always been more difficult for me to establish relationships. I have often found myself
gravitating toward people who make themselves available to me, even if they are not healthy or a good fit for my
life. (HM)
Growing up, I did not have the best relationships with people in my family. I learned to value stability and
consistency in relationships rather than maintaining unhealthy relationships out of obligation. (DISC)
My relationship with my mom is most important as she is the closest family I have and the most consistent person in
my life.
My relationship with my dad is, still after many years, hard for me to navigate. That relationship remains one of the
lesser important to me because he has not been a stable person in my life. (LSPN)
Over the years, some of the best relationships in my life have been with people to who I am not related to.
Through several experiences, I have learned that many of the people who are supposed to be closest to me are
actually the most unreachable and/or least supportive.
THEME 1: RELATIONSHIPS CON’T
Contradictory Evidence
I often shy away from social settings and opportunities to make friends. I think this is because of many
very personal reasons, but also because I am simply content with how my life is now and I am not
looking for other people to add to my routine.
Reflection
Having grown up with very few trustworthy and stable figures in my life, I became untrusting of people
and prefer to stay to myself. In recent years, I have become better about being open to new
relationships and not being so closed off. In my professional life, this affects me in the way that I do not
seek true friendships with my coworkers (as most of them do), but my introverted personality does not
affect my job.
THEME 2: DISCIPLINE
Theme Statement: Maintaining a high level of discipline in every area of my life is vital for my sense of well-being and efficiency.
Supporting Data:
I have an obsessive personality (OCD) and I often fixate on things/tasks.
Having a high level of discipline makes me a stellar employee as I follow through in everything that I do. (KSC)
When I am in situations/environments that allow me to carry myself and operate with discipline, I feel most efficient and I feel that
my work is consistently reflective of my discipline through excellent attention to detail, organization, etc. (DISC)
I practice discipline in all areas of my life (work, school, and home) and this keeps me accountable and it helps maintain a good
mental/emotional state.
Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my grandma who was a stickler about keeping a tidy house and I believe much of my need
for discipline stems from her. (LSPN)
I believe having a strong sense of discipline will help me as a leader as I will be able to set standards for employees to strive
towards, which is something that many of my managers have failed to do.
THEME 2: DISCIPLINE CON’T
Contradictory Evidence
Sometimes a high level of discipline affects me negatively because I expect other people to do things
the same way I do and it can lead to conflict if that does not happen.
Reflection
Some aspects of my childhood formulated this obsessive personality that I have today. I thrive in
positions where I am able to maintain my sense of discipline and since entering the workforce, I have
noticed that this personality trait helps me be an above-average employee and secures me as an asset
to my organization.
THEME 3: STABILITY
Theme Statement: I seek stability in all aspects of my life to make me feel secure and accomplished.
Supporting Data:
Growing up in a single parent household, stability was ingrained in me at a young age because of my fear of the unknown. (DISC)
I associate stability with longevity (specifically in my career) and I further associate this with success. Having tenure in my position
makes me feel comfortable speaking and contributing to my organization which makes me feel like I am making a difference.
(MCA)
Having a sense of stability makes me feel more secure in planning out my future and creating long-term goals for myself.
Feeling stable brings me peace and comfort. (LPSN)
Creating routines for myself in almost all aspects of my life helps me feel a strong sense of stability in every task. I thrive on
operating by routines.
Stability gives me a sense of accomplishment because, for lack of better words, I feel like I have my life together. I have a home, a
car, a job, and my education. All of those things resemble stability and accomplishments to me.
THEME 3: STABILITY CON’T
Contradictory Evidence
Although I value a strong sense of stability, I am not sure what I want to do with my life. I know that my
current career, and even my current degree program, are not what I want to do for the rest of my life.
Not feeling that I am working towards my “dream life” gives me a small sense of instability.
Reflection
My upbringing made me value stability from a young age. I feel a sense of pride and success in
finding stability in everything that I do and I am able to plan out my future/next steps because I know
where I will be living, what I will be doing, etc.
THEME 4: EDUCATION
Theme Statement: Education is important because it provides me with multiple opportunities including a life that I envision for myself.
Supporting Data:
I am determined to earn a higher education because my mom was not a college graduate while I was growing up. I saw her
struggle financially and we both experienced many disadvantages because of it. (MCA)
A college education will help me to grow and achieve a higher-level position with an increased amount of responsibility and a
desirable salary with my employer.
I believe a college education will create new opportunities that I may not know about yet. These opportunities may be outside of
my current employer and ASU.
An education will make me an asset to any organization I choose to belong to. (DISC)
Earning a college degree makes me feel successful as I am furthering my knowledge in areas that I may not otherwise have the
opportunity to learn about. (KCI)
My education is a major personal accomplishment because I will be the first one in my family to earn a college degree.
THEME 4: EDUCATION CON’T
Contradictory Evidence
Even though education is important to me, and I feel accomplished to earn this degree, this is not the
field that I want to ultimately enter. After I complete this program, I will be pursuing an additional
program after I graduate.
Reflection
Growing up in a poor home, I am more than determined to earn a college degree. A college education
will allow me to grow and reach higher leveled positions with my employer and earn higher wages. I
will be a bigger asset to any employer, and new opportunities that I do not know about will become
available. Working through a college program has taught me about things that I otherwise would not
know about. I feel very accomplished to be the first one in my family to earn a college education.
THEME 5: CAREER
Theme Statement: Choosing a career is vital to my future path and satisfaction level within my job.
Supporting Data:
I want to be a part of an organization that creates good in the world.
Choosing the right career is important because I want to make sure I am happy with it for the rest of my life. (KCI)
A career should provide me with the lifestyle that I want for myself. (LSPN)
Making a difference in the world and leaving a positive impact is imperative to me.
I want a career that allows me to express my natural abilities and interests.
My ideal career will be flexible because I do not want to be stuck in a 9 to 5 desk job. (KSC)
THEME 5: CAREER CON’T
Contradictory Evidence
Criminal Justice is my main career interest, but I have many other career interests in law, healthcare,
and engineering.
Reflection
Creating good things that impact people in positive ways means the most to me. A career that allows
me to be expressive will make me happy. I want a career that will include advancement opportunities
and afford me the lifestyle that I want. This career will also be flexible enough for me to set my own
hours and schedules.
THEME 6: INCLUSION
Theme Statement: Belonging to an inclusive environment is imperative for me to feel safe and heard.
Supporting Data:
Growing up, and even still today, I was an outcast in my family and rarely felt comfortable in group settings with my family. (LSPN)
Being a (young) female in the construction industry is a challenge and finding my place and/or voice is even more of a challenge
that I am faced with daily.
Having had close friends who belonged to the LGBTQ+ community, I have always taken great importance to hosting an inclusive
environment where everyone is treated with equal respect and opportunity.
As I am naturally introverted, inclusive spaces make me feel welcome to share my ideas and/or questions and concerns. (DISC)
Having an inclusive mindset will propel me as a good leader and give me the tools to understand people, evoke new ideas, and
create lasting relationships with a wide variety of people. (MCA)
Not only does inclusion make me feel safe, it also makes me feel good to foster a safe place for other people and it gives me the
opportunity to learn from other sources that an inclusive environment wouldn’t be exposed to.
THEME 6: INCLUSION CON’T
Contradictory Evidence
Though I appreciate the opportunity to interact with people different from me, I do not find myself with
the opportunity much as I don’t enlist myself in settings or situations that would afford me those
opportunities.
Reflection
Inclusion is important to me because it makes me feel that I can openly express myself in different
settings. It is also important to me that I make myself inclusive of the people around me as I have
experienced and seen people that I love not be treated with that respect.
THEME 7: MENTAL HEALTH
Theme Statement: Engaging in situations and doing the things to protect my mental health is of top priority.
Supporting Data:
Mental health problems run in my family and I have seen how damaging/debilitating they can be for someone if untreated. (LSPN)
Maintaining a good mental space for myself allows me to excel in everything that I do – school, work, home life. (MCA)
I have learned how to protect my mental health from toxic situations and people which can be mostly accredited to my childhood.
When I take care of my mental health, I feel accomplished because I am able to give my best to everyone and everything.
Having grown up in a “sweep it under the rug” mentality, it has become important for me to voice my feelings so that I can work
through them appropriately and avoid causing myself unnecessary trauma. (HM)
It makes me feel proud to be aware of my mental health and take action to protect it as so many people in my family have not and
have lived miserable and damaging lives because of it.
THEME 7: MENTAL HEALTH CON’T
Contradictory Evidence
I have the tendency to bottle things up sometimes. Particularly in my work, I am bad about not
speaking up when things bother me for fear of causing trouble for someone else.
Reflection
My family has a history of mental illness and I have seen firsthand how restricting it can be on
someone’s life if not dealt with properly. My family has a long history of “self-treating” these problems
with addiction and it has been my main focus and biggest goal not to fall into this trap. Being aware
of my mental health and getting help when I need it is a huge accomplishment of mine.
THEME 8: TRAVEL
Theme Statement: Traveling to new places is not only important to me but an essential value to my life.
Supporting Data:
Growing up poor, I did not have the opportunity to travel until my late teenage years and I quickly fell in love with seeing new
places, cultures, people, etc.
Having the ability to travel has given me the opportunity to leave my hometown and start a new life for myself free of my past.
(LSPN)
The company I work for provides a lot of opportunities to those willing to travel and/or relocate. (MCA)
Traveling gives me a sense of peace and reminds me that I am only a small part of this world.
I have been able to meet new people through traveling that I otherwise would have never run into or built a friendship with. (DISC)
Having been afforded the opportunity to start a new life 2,000 miles away from my hometown, I have found much more peace
and I am able to experience life in a way that I did not know existed.
THEME 8: TRAVEL CON’T
Contradictory Evidence
While I’d love to get in the car and go somewhere new every weekend, here recently I have found
myself being a homebody and not even leaving my house during the weekends.
Reflection
When I was growing up, I hardly ever saw the outskirts of my hometown. Once I got older, I was able
to start venturing out and have since traveled extensively being afforded so many opportunities.
Traveling is important to my wellbeing and mental clarity, but having a willingness to travel will also
help propel my career in the future.
THEME 9: HUMILITY
Theme Statement: Remaining humble through all stages of my life is important to my character.
Supporting Data:
I grew up very humble and still live that way today even though I have the means to live a little bit differently.
Most of my dreams and goals are relatively small. For instance, where some people’s dream house may be big or luxurious, mine is
simply a house with a pool.
My mom always told me “you catch more bees with honey” and that is something I still try to live by today. (LSPN)
No matter my circumstances, I try to treat everyone with the same respect. At my previous employer, the janitor once told me that I
was one of the only few people who treated her with the same respect as I treated our director. (HM)
In my opinion, humility is more impressive than any title or monetary figure.
It makes me proud to remain humble because I have seen so many people let money and titles change them for the worse. (DISC)
THEME 9: HUMILITY CON’T
Contradictory Evidence
I do not feel that there is contradictory evidence in my humility. I have the mentality that I am still poor
and struggling and I don’t let my current “wage” or social status change who I am or how I treat
people.
Reflection
I was humbled by life at a very young age and I have carried that same mindset with me throughout
the rest of my life and at every stage. It makes me very proud to carry myself with such humility that
some people twice my age don’t have.
THEME 10: FREEDOM
Theme Statement: Freedom is important to me in every facet.
Supporting Data:
Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to leave my hometown, but I didn’t know how or think that I ever would. It’s important to
me to have the freedom to leave places, people, and things that no longer fit me. (MCA)
I appreciate freedom in my job and the ability to tailor my processes to fit my work style. (KCS)
Freedom gives me a sense of independence that I crave from growing up with an independent mother. (DISC)
I find a sense of comfort in being given the freedom to make my own decisions in all aspects of life.
I like having the freedom to travel and relocate at my leisure while I’m young so that I can plant solid roots for my future family.
Having worked for micromanagers many times before, I find a lot of value in a manager who gives me the freedom to work
independently, on my terms, and in my own way.
THEME 10: FREEDOM CON’T
Contradictory Evidence
Although I value freedom in many areas, I also tend to look to people for direction and reassurance
that what I’m doing is right.
Reflection
Many things in my life have made me appreciative of freedom, particularly my experience in the
workplace. A job that allows me the freedom to create my own process and not be governed by a
time clock is everything to me.
“My life has been a series of small wins and big failures, but through the power to
persevere and overcome, my life will become a collection of massive success and
quality lessons learned.”
Reflection: My mission statement means that I will, and am, using my hurdles to help
me become a better woman, a better employee, student, daughter, etc, and leave an
impact in this world reflective of the struggles I have gone through and how I
overcame them in the most positive ways.
