Internship tenure:
The Learner interned at the firm for 4 weeks, starting from April 1’2022 to April 30’
2022.
Role and Responsibilities assigned during the internship
Being a law student can be a great deal of fun, particularly when you hear about the various types of
lawyers that are available. However, theory will only tell you so much, and you can need to learn
practical experience after a certain point. As a result, doing a law-related internship was immensely
helpful to me because it provided me with in-depth knowledge of the area. The responsibilities of a
legal intern differ depending on the firm's needs and the student's level of experience, but they usually
include routine office work including copying and filing, legal studies, client assistance, and assisting
lawyers with paperwork and the courtroom. The learner was mainly given the research work to finding
case precedents to support the client’s claim and help them win by not just finding the appropriate and
fitting case law but understanding all dimensions of the case section to be applied in the question and
applying it as was necessary so as to do all that legally as it wasn’t always that we were on the same
side of the law but it helped the learner gain immense exposure in terms of what would the work be as
an associate.
Finding appropriate legal precedents which are applicable to the case at hand and where the
facts are either similar or exactly the same.
Reading and understanding the concept and reasoning behind the sections and articles of
various acts and codes under which the case is filed so as to not only reduce burden of my
supervisor but also to explain elaborately to the clients.
Making case briefs i.e., summary on all the facts, reasoning and the final verdict on all the
cases read and sending the summary via e-mail.
Organizing paperwork so as to help arrange my supervisor all the documents and all of the
information and evidence which they have to bring to the court.
Develop networking skills so as to have better communication not just with the clients but also
the other colleagues at the firm.
Learnings
On my first day, my supervisor gave me a copy of the bare act of the Information Technology
Act, 2000 that gave me the opportunity to learn not just the procedure of the workings at some
of the cases at the firm but also the structure under which the research for a lot of the legal
writing was to be done.
I had a lot of interactions with the director of IPR advocacy Dr. Sheetal Chopra and she
explained elaborately how she wanted me to research and make the case briefs which was
very helpful as after the talk, I could give her the research exactly like she wanted.
Although I want to pursue corporate law as a career, I always wanted to try an internship at a
IPR firm as I wanted to explore all my options before choosing a path and I gained invaluable
exposure.
Since the firm was not too big everyone could communicate quite easily and thus, I personally
could learn much more about the lifestyle and routine of lawyers not academically but from a
practical point of view as I would myself become one.
I was taught at the firm that one of a legal professional's most essential basic assets is
language. The intern must be able to communicate in a straightforward, succinct, and rational
manner.
In terms of legal academic learnings, I was told that an intern should also be familiar with
legal terminology. Interns also learn how to write petitions, responses, and written
submissions, among other things. They must learn how to compose well-structured, succinct,
and compelling writing. Interns are expected to do all of the tasks that attorneys perform on a
regular basis.
The major takeaway however was, the words of our managing partner:
“You do not associate with the Ericsson India Pvt. Ltd. to help others, you do it to help yourself. What
is important to learn values and grow as an individual. Do not think the oppressed need my help, think I
need them to help myself grow.”
Overall Experience
My overall takeaway from the internship was exceedingly enriching. The most crucial component of
the legal career is the internship. Since there is a presence of a managed and secure climate, this helped
me instil the spirit of team work, made me more patient, and helped me practise time management.
Many of these factors together helped me realise how my coursework assists me in preparing for my
future career.
The aim of an internship is to get a greater understanding of what it takes to be a lawyer, and the best
way to do that is to be around or in touch with lawyers. The biggest motivation for looking for an
internship is to learn more about the legal profession. Examine how they handle their time and how
their behaviour changes depending on the situation.
I believe that an internship also gives you secondary learning as this was an opportunity for me to
experience a true online internship, juggle studying for externals and the internship work and also
manage time effectively so as to meet the deadlines.
Thus, the internship was not just a work pursuit but also helped me grow as an individual.
