- Coca-Cola failed to uphold its ethical and social obligations to public and environmental health
and safety. Threatening union leaders, illegal bio-solid waste disposal, and the usage of
groundwater in India, which has compromised water quality, are just a few of the serious
allegations filed against the Coca-Cola Company. They have broken their ethical and social
obligation by creating and discarding their products in such a way that their actions have
harmed the environment and consumers' health. Furthermore, the corporation lacked urgency
and accountability by refusing to submit to an independent investigation, demonstrating that
they were unconcerned about the accusations and did nothing to clear their name.
2. Is the University being unreasonable in the high standards demanded in the Vendor Code of
conduct?
- Not at all, because it encompasses the ethical concepts and values that must be preserved for
peace and order, the Vendor code of conduct serves to protect public and environmental
welfare. These requirements are rigorous and stringent, but they are far from unreasonable, as
they will keep vendors in touch. If at all possible, the Vendor Code of Conduct should be
followed worldwide, not just at the University of Michigan, because vendors will gain immensely
by being aware of their responsibilities. It also supports acceptable labor standards for
employees to understand their basic rights and pave the way for a safe and sustainable working
environment. Furthermore, the University made certain that they followed due process when
they received several complaints against Coca-Cola, recommending a third-party independent
audit to assess the accusations and requesting an independent investigation to guarantee that
all concerns are true.
3. Do you think the University would have developed the Vendor Code of Conduct without the
aggressive campaign put forward by SOLE?
- I believe SOLE's aggressive effort was instrumental in the development of the Vendor Code of
Conduct. They would have responded differently towards the immoral actions if not for this eye-
opening campaign, by not enforcing standards that are rigorous in nature. With this, the
University became more aware of and educated about corporate social responsibilities as a
result of their campaign, and they were able to focus on delivering not only great education but
also quality policies and procedures that prioritize the health and safety of vendors and
students. Furthermore, the active campaigning became a platform to learn more about a variety
of issues, including health and safety, labor work, human rights, environmental protection, and
violence, such as harassment or abuse. SOLE's efforts to launch the campaign resulted in the
creation of the Vendor Code of Conduct.
4. How should Coca - Cola respond in order to keep the University of Michigan contract?
- Coca-Cola should take appropriate action by at least complying with the University of Michigan's
Vendor Code of Conduct; this is the bare minimum that multinational corporations could do.
Coca-Cola should also follow the advice given to them, which is to employ an impartial third-
party auditor to review the accusations. They were being extremely unprofessional by failing to
meet the standards by the deadline, and they should have done so in order to keep the..
University of Michigan contracts. Furthermore, they should improve their ways and practices
because it was clear that they did not adhere to a number of ethical principles. In order to
increase their company's performance, they must make quick decisions and take action. An
environmentally appropriate method for disposing of biosolid waste should be devised. They
should also tighten their quality control to avoid the inclusion of unneeded and potentially
dangerous substances in their products. In summary, they should handle each problem
separately, with the assistance of professionals, to ensure that similar problems do not emerge
in the future.
- The condition may be tied to our local environment, including the government and other
industries and corporations. Certain government initiatives disregard the health and safety of its
constituents and violate ethical, social, and environmental standards. They are only concerned
with the profits they can make from the funds raised from the people's taxes, which results in
mediocre quality and anti-poor projects. Furthermore, other local firms have violated ethical
principles as well. Also, labor standards are important since some workers, such as healthcare
professionals and farmers, are clearly underpaid. Another tangible example relevant to this
issue is that there have been several human rights atrocities in our country, primarily as a result
of the War on Drugs, which has resulted in extrajudicial deaths and numerous harassment and
abuse incidents throughout the current administration's tenure. Our government also does not
prioritize health and safety as a result of how poorly they handled the pandemic.
