AAPG L Austin Proposal-2022 - Final
Our student chapter has currently 38 active members and many membership applications are still
waiting for approval. The officers for the University of Dhaka AAPG Student Chapter’s committee for
2021-22 are listed below:
During the Covid-19 pandemic we had to arrange our all programs via online platform “Zoom”. The most
recent activities of the chapter for the session 2021-22 are:
1. Arranged a 3 days long geological field work on Analysis of Groundwater Quality at the Cox’s Bazar
and St. Martins Island, Bangladesh.
2. Published the 3rd issue of our annual geoscience magazine “theEARTH” from our student chapter.
3. Arranged “Workshop Week & Competition: Skill Development in Fields of Geoscience” on the
subjects: ‘Python Data Science for Petrophysical Analysis and Visualization’, ‘Adobe Illustrator for
Stratigraphic Succession’ and ‘Fundamentals of GIS and ArcMap Software’.
4. Arranged an hour long online session on “How to Apply for L. Austin Undergraduate Grant Program-
2022” in order to make it easier for the applicants to apply for the grant program.
5. Arranged a 7-day “Membership Campaign” for the students interested in applying for AAPG’s student
membership.
6. Arranged Freshers’ Orientation Program for the fresher students admitted in Department of Geology,
University of Dhaka for getting acquainted with our student chapter and our missions.
Other major activities of the chapter since its inception are as follows:
1. Lecture program on “Breakup of Eastern Gondwana Land: Genesis of Petroleum System of
Bangladesh” in 2015.
2. Organized AAPG Visiting Geoscientist Program in 2016.
3. Arranged a Field Training on Resistivity Survey in 2017.
4. Arranged a presentation competition among students of the department in 2017.
5. Organized “DU Geo-exposure” 2017 & 2018 collaborating with other geoscience student chapters.
6. Arranged a seminar on “Guidelines to Study Abroad” in 2019.
7. Arranged a 2-day geological field trip in Sylhet Basin in 2019.
8. Publishing the 1st and 2nd issues of the geoscience magazine “theEARTH” in 2019 and 2020.
9. Arranged a lecture program of two sessions named “Connecting to Geo-Professional”.
As a student chapter, our prime notion always remains in engaging the enthusiasts in various activities.
But the only hindrance we face is the financial support. Often we arrange programs in association with
sponsorship, which is insufficient to carry out large-scale activities such as carrying out fieldworks,
buying instruments etc. Every year we rely on different grants and donations to accomplish those. The
AAPG foundations L. Austin week undergraduate grant has been a supportive grant for us until now.
Intended Use of Fund:
The Chittagong Tripura Fold Belt (CTFB), lying on south eastern part of the Bengal Basin in Bangladesh is
an uplifted hilly region that is westward continuation of the Indo-Burman Range. It comprises a thick
succession of Neogene sediments which has been uplifted and exposed due to oblique subduction of
Indian plate below Burma plate as accretionary prism. Due to active tectonism, Neogene succession of
CTFB has been uplifted and exposed at areas including Teknaf, Chittagong, where exposures are ideal for
studying the Neogene succession of Bengal Basin.
Recently, an exposure of Turbidite Bouma Sequence has been reported at the Olatong anticline, Teknaf
which is yet to be studied extensively for correlating its stratigraphy to that of Bengal Basin’s. The
Bouma Sequence at Olatong anticline could be result of deep marine environment at Neogene period.
As students pursuing Geology and residing in Bangladesh, arranging a geological field work to study the
Bouma Sequence exposure at Olatong anticline, Teknaf to interpret its depositional environment and
correlate it with the Neogene succession of CTFB could be a great opportunity for the students. With
such aim, current committee of our chapter has decided to arrange a 2 day long geological field work at
Olatong anticline, Teknaf with student members of our chapter accompanied by the chapter’s faculty
advisor and 2 honorable teachers.
Therefore, the L Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grant could provide us with a strong financial support to
arrange the field work successfully if our chapter is nominated for the grant program this year.
