A funny thing happened…

 Kalim, 26
In 2017, I travelled around Europe for a month. Everything was new to me – it was my first
 trip outside Turkey. I was also desperate to impress my girlfriend. She loves ballet, and
when we were in St Petersburg I decided to surprise her. I bought tickets from a ticket office
at the theatre. I was pleased because they’d cost a lot less than I expected. That evening

we went to the theatre wearing our smartest clothes. When the performance started, it was
immediately obvious that I’d made a mistake. There isn’t any singing in ballet! We were
 watching an opera. And they were singing in Russian. We couldn’t understand any of the
words, but in the end that wasn’t important. The music was incredible and we could follow
 the story quite well.
Sergei, 48

Last year I took my wife and two children to Rome. I’d studied there for a year when I was in
my twenties and I was looking forward to showing the city to my family. We visited the
 famous Trevi Fountain – it’s one of the most beautiful statues in Rome and always busy
with tourists taking selfies. On this particular day, it was very crowded and my wife was
 feeling hot and tired. Eventually, we all sat on the wall around the fountain. My wife was
trying to take a selfie of all four of us. I tried to make her laugh by waving my arms around,
 but – disaster – I fell into the water. We have a very funny picture of my children’s faces as I
disappear. Of course, lots of other people recorded this moment in their selfies and videos.
For a day or two I was (almost) an online celebrity. I enjoyed my moment of fame, but my

children were very embarrassed.
Margaret, 69

I’d visited India on holiday twice before but I’d never been to the north of the country. One
day, I visited The Golden Temple at Amritsar. This beautiful building is not visited very often
by Europeans but it is very popular with Indian visitors and is always crowded. I was looking
at the beautiful paintings and statues when a man started shouting. I didn’t understand
what he was saying, but that’s no excuse. In truth, I simply wasn’t paying attention. I didn’t
notice that everyone else was leaving. When I turned around a few minutes later, everyone
had gone. When I got to the exit door I realized I’d been shut in. The tempIe was closed for
the evening and the man had been asking everyone to leave. Straight away I shouted and
banged on the door. I made a lot of noise! I thought I’d be in the temple all night. Of course,
I wasn’t alone. There were still several people inside the building and they soon let me out.
No one thought it was a problem except me. I was so embarrassed.

Did you have (you / have) a good New Year’s Eve? Sophie and I went to
 Edinburgh. We hadn’t been  there before. When we arrived  everything was

white because it had snowed  earlier in the day. It took  three hours to find

somewhere to stay, because we hadn’t booked  a hotel.

We spent  New Year’s Eve with some of Sophie’s friends.

She hadn’t seen  them for a long time so they had a lot to talk about!

Happy New Year!
