VIII. Key Concepts  The periodic table is a chart containing information about the atoms that make
up all matter.
 Johann W. Dobereiner classified three elements that have similar properties into
a group known as a triad. Lithium, sodium, and potassium form a triad. Calcium,
strontium, and barium form a triad. Chlorine, bromine, and iodine form a triad.
He suggested that the relative atomic mass of the second element in a triad is
the average of the relative atomic mass of the first and third elements in the
triad.

In 1863, John Newlands, an English chemist, proposed the Law of Octaves. He based
his classification of elements on the fact that similar properties could be noted
for every eight elements when they are arranged in order of increasing atomic masses.
(Law of Octaves)
Dmitri Mendeleev was a German chemist who studied the chemical properties of
elements and atomic weights.
Around 1869, two scientists determined a way to put the elements in order. Lothar
Meyer and Dmitri Mendeleev both came up with periodic tables that showed
how elements should be grouped. Elements were arranged in the order of
increasing atomic weight. A more comprehensive table is the forerunner of the
modern periodic table.
1914, Henry Moseley, an English physicist, observed that x-ray frequencies emitted by
elements could be correlated better with their atomic numbers. He computed the atomic
number of the elements. This observation led to the development of the modern periodic
law, which states that the properties of elements are periodic functions of their atomic
numbers

the development of the periodic table. The virtual museum has 4 rooms each
room has important pieces of information on how the different scientists
arrange the elements in the periodic table.

2. Prompt the students with questions before entering the next room

Room 1 ( Dobereigner )

1. How did Dobereigner, arrange the elements?

Elements with
similar
properties
2. What properties were the basis of the triad system? were grouped
in triads
3. Why did Dobereiner believe that lithium, sodium, and potassium belonged in a (three)
triad?

Room 2: (John Newland)

1. How did John Newland arrange the elements?

Elements
were arranged
in the order of
increasing
2. What was a problem with the “Law of Octaves"? atomic weight.

How Important is the Periodic table and how does it work?

 Rather than memorizing facts and figures of each element a quick look at the
interactive periodic table tells us a lot about the element.

Looking at the picture and the statement who can give me an insight
about the importance of chemistry as an organizing tool?

Why was the periodic table important?
