What Is Hyperaldosteronism?
- Hyperaldosteronism is a condition in which one or both adrenal
glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.
- Aldosterone is a steroid hormone made in the outer part (cortex) of
adrenal glands.
-This hormone helps control the levels of potassium and sodium in the
blood.

What causes
hyperaldosteronism?
- Hyperaldosteronism can be caused by a benign (noncancerous)
tumor on the adrenal gland.

- Another possible cause of hyperaldosteronism is hyperplasia

(overactivity) of the adrenal glands.

- In some cases, hyperaldosteronism is an inherited condition.

Types of hyperaldosteronism
- There are two types of hyperaldosteronism, known as primary and
secondary hyperaldosteronism. While they have similar symptoms,
their causes are different.

1-Primary hyperaldosteronism
- Primary hyperaldosteronism is caused by a problem with one or both
adrenal glands.
-It’s sometimes referred to as Conn’s syndrome.
-Some people are born with overactive adrenal glands.

-Others might have it due to:

1- A benign tumor on one of the adrenal glands
2- Adrenocortical cancer, which is a rare aldosterone-producing
cancerous tumor
3- Glucocorticoid-remediable aldosteronism, a type of aldosteronism
that runs in families
4- Other types of inheritable issues that affect the adrenal glands

2-Secondary hyperaldosteronism:
-Secondary hyperaldosteronism is caused by something outside the
adrenal glands.
-It’s usually related to reduced blood flow to your kidneys.

Several things can cause this, including:

 a blockage or narrowing of the renal artery

 chronic liver disease
 heart failure
 diuretic medications

Symptom of hyperaldosteronism
-The main symptom of hyperaldosteronism is hypertension (high
blood pressure ), which can range from moderate to severe.
- The hypertension is usually hard to control.
- High blood pressure can cause other symptoms, including the
following:‌

 Headaches
 D
‌ izziness
 B
‌ lurry vision
 H
‌ eart problems

- The other main symptom of hyperaldosteronism is hypokalemia (low

potassium). Not enough potassium can cause problems, especially with
muscles.
Symptoms from this condition include the following:

 Numbness
 Tingling
 T
‌ emporary paralysis
 W
‌ eak muscles
 C
‌ ramps

Diagnosis of Hyperaldosteronism
- Hyperaldosteronism is diagnosed by measuring the blood levels of
aldosterone and renin, an enzyme released by your kidney that works
with aldosterone to help balance blood pressure.

- People with hyperaldosteronism generally have low renin levels and

high aldosterone levels.

- Salt-loading test. This measures the levels of aldosterone and sodium

in your urine after following a high-sodium diet for three to five days.

- Saline infusion test. This blood test measures your aldosterone,

renin, and other levels after you receive an IV sodium and saline
solution

Treatments of Hyperaldosteronism
- T‌ reatments for hyperaldosteronism vary depending on the type and
cause.

- Surgery. Your doctor will usually recommend laparoscopic

surgery for tumors or growths that are only on one adrenal gland.
Having laparoscopic surgery means a shorter hospital stay and quicker
recovery. ‌

-‌ Medications. If there are growths on both adrenal glands, your doctor

will give you diuretic medications like spironolactone or eplerenone.
You may also receive aldosterone-blocking medications. These don’t fix
the problem but help manage the effects.
-Lifestyle changes. You might also have to make some lifestyle
changes, especially if you have high blood pressure; Eating a healthy
diet, exercising, quitting smoking.
