HYDRAULIC AND PNEUMATIC TOOLS

Aim: - To study various Hydraulic and Pneumatic tools. Introduction:-:

Hydraulic System:-

A hydraulic system is an arrangement or device in which a liquid act as the medium for transmitting power of force and power by pressure. A liquid at high pressure is a convenient medium for working slow moving machinery involving larger forces. The working fluid in a hydraulic system is incompressible. Thus a hydraulic system can move large loads.

There are various Hydraulic Tools :1) Hydraulic Jack. 2) Hydraulic Cutter. 3) Hydraulic Expander.

Hydraulic Jack :-

Hydraulic jack is a device in which Only a small force is required by the operator to raise heavy loads. The large piston can be stopped at any point because the oil can not be compressed.

It is used for shop work rather than in emergency. It is used to lift elevators in low and medium rise buildings. To ensure stability when it is extended. It uses a fluid which is incompressible, i.e. force into a cylinder by a pump plunger. Oil is used since it is self lubricating.

When plunger pulls back it flow oil out of the reservoir through a suction check valve. When the plunger moves forward, it pushes the oil through a discharge check valve.

Hydraulic Cutter :-

Hydraulic Cutter is a hydraulic tool which is designed to cut metals through a hydraulically powered shear. It is often called Crab Cutter, owing the shape and configuration of blades. It has capacity to cut a solid circular steel bar. Most commonly it is used to cut through a vehicles and structure in a operation. Cutter blades are replaceable and blade development progress as vehicle technology progress in order to cope with the new ear protection technology.

Hydraulic Expander :
Hydraulic expander is a hydraulically operated tool with two arms which comes together in a narrow tip. It uses hydraulic pressure to spread arms. The tip of tool can be inserted in a narrow gap between two vehicle panels. When the tool is operated, The arms are open pushing apart the metal in a panel. It is used to pop vehicle from their fingers.

-: Advantages of hydraulic system:

High output force. Accurate hydraulic pressure. No corrosion. Continuous variable transmission.

-: Disadvantages of hydraulic system:

Fluid might leak out. Fluid will degrade due to heat. Fluid flow speed is limited. Pipes are complicated. Working fluid is often flammable.

-: Pneumatic System:A pneumatic system is an arrangement or device in which air act as the medium for transmitting power of force and power by pressure. Air at high pressure is a convenient medium for working fast moving machinery involving medium forces.

Pneumatic systems are designed to move loads by controlling pressurized air in distribution lines and piston with mechanical electronic valve. Air under pressure possesses energy which can be released to do useful work. Example of pneumatic system:- Dentists drill, pneumatic road drill etc.

Components of a Pneumatic System:

Compressor is the power source of a pneumatic system. It usually driven by a motor or an internal combustion engine. The compressed air is first stored in a strong metal tank called Reservoir. Before entering in the cylinder and valves, the compressed air has to pass through the air treatment devices, including air filter to remove dust and moisture, pressure regulator to adjust pressure, and lubricator to spray lubricating oil.

-: Advantages of pneumatic system:

Air is easily available. Fast response. Air is non-flammable. Continuous variable transmission.

-: Disadvantages of pneumatic system:

Output force is limited. Corrosion may occur. Pipe length is limited.
