Chapter – 1
Crop Production and Management
Let’s Learn

All living organisms need food. Animals including human beings

cannot make their own food. Since we all need food, food has to be produced
on a large scale. We need to provide food to a large number of people in our
country. In a vast country like India, a rich variety of crops are grown in
different parts of the country. In order to provide food for a large population-
regular production, proper management and distribution of food is necessary.

Find out

Question – Millets are grains that used to be popular in India years ago. However, after the Green
Revolution, they gave way to wheat and rice. Millets are poised to make a comeback due to their high
nutritional content than wheat and rice. Find out: Which grains are termed millets and what other
advantages because of which they are set to replace wheat and rice?

Chapter-11
Force and Pressure
Let’s Learn

Pushes and pulls are forces. A force arises due to the interaction
between two objects. Some forces act on objects only when they are in contact
with the body. Some other forces can also act on objects which are not in
contact. Force acting on an object may cause change in state of motion, speed,
shape and direction of motion. The force acting on a unit area of a surface is
called pressure.

Some Natural Phenomena
Let’s Learn

Lightning and earthquake are two destructive natural phenomena

which can cause a lot of damage to human life and property. Lightning is an
electric spark on a huge scale which is caused by the accumulation of electric
charges in the clouds. The tectonic plates of earth’s lithosphere float over the
hot magma below. When these plates collide, the plates slide over each other
sending shock waves of energy in all directions. When these waves reach the
surface, they are felt as earthquakes. Earthquakes cannot be predicted.

Light
Let’s Learn

The world is largely known through the senses. The sense of sight is
one of the most important senses. Light is needed to see things around us. We
can see an object only when light reflected from an object enters our eyes.
Reflection is the phenomenon in which light, on striking a surface changes its
direction and is thrown back into the same medium.
