LESSON D A NORMAL DAY

1. STUDY THESE EXAMPLES AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS:

San Diego - Tijuana El Paso – Juarez Calexico - Mexicali

• What are “twin cities”? • What other examples of twin cities can you mention?

2. READ THE TEXT AND DECIDE IF THE SENTENCES ARE TRUE (T) OR FALSE (F).

Wake up, cross the border, go to school!

A metal fence separates Calexico in the USA and Mexicali in Mexico, but that is not an
obstacle for the children who go to Calexico Mission School. Crossing the border is a
normal daily routine for them. Ailani Mares, a Calexico Mission student from Mexicali says: “I love to live
on the border,” “Oh, my mom and dad, they’re in Mexico, and I’m in the United States!”

“The border separates Mexican and American people, but here that is not true”, says Yolanda Johnston, a
school instructor. More than 4.5 million people cross the Californian border annually. “People aren’t doing
something wrong. Most of the people crossing are good, honest people” says David Salazar, director of
the Calexico ports of entry.

Calexico Mission pupils need student visas to make the crossing. They wake up so early and spend a lot
of time in traffic with their parents or in a van that takes them to the port of entry. Then, they walk almost
500 meters to school, in a hot desert that is more than 45 degrees Celsius in the summer.
Marian Mendoza, an 11-year-old girl says that she wakes up at 5:15 a.m. On the contrary, her American
classmate, Yasmin Corral, 11 years old too, lives in Calexico and says that she sleeps until 7:20 a.m. The
school logo includes both the U.S. and Mexican flags.

For many families, it is a sacrifice to have their children at Mission School. “We earn pesos and pay dollars
and the exchange rate makes the situation really hard sometimes” says Oscar Olivarria. He has his two
kids in this school. “But obviously, this is a priority and that is the reason why we make the sacrifice.” “We
pray for the dollar to go down” says Ailani Mares. Her father is a doctor, and they don’t have financial
problems, but it is really hard for her classmates sometimes.

Salvador Chacon is in his first year at Calexico Mission School. His three sisters are now in college, and
he knows his parents are sacrificing a lot for him. “My parents have no education”, he says. “But that
motivates me”. Brenda Gallardo has three children in Mission School. She is horrified when the peso goes
down. “It means $5,000 extra pesos, but I have to keep them in school”.
“Education is the only way that we have to fight poverty, to fight
corruption, to fight all the limitations that Mexico has,” Gallardo says. “I
can send my kids to the Mexican public school. But I definitely want better
things for them”.

LESSON E WRITING A BLOG

1. READ MARCOS’S BLOG. IS YOUR FAVORITE DAY SIMILAR TO MARCOS’S?

My favorite day
Marcos from Pachuca Hidalgo in Mexico
My favorite day is Saturday. I get up very late and have my favorite meal for breakfast in bed. I don’t get
dressed. I like wearing my pajamas. In the afternoon, mom always cooks something for lunch, but on
Saturday we usually order pizza. I never do homework on the weekend. When my father gets home he
always gives my sister and I pocket money, so we go to our favorite candy store and buy a snack. Before
I go to bed I always take a long bath. I relax and then I see videos on Youtube or read a book. I love
Saturdays because I don’t go to school so I go to bed at 11:30 pm. I usually feel relaxed at the end of the
day. And you? What’s your favorite day?
