A. Introduction
Sci-fi films or science fiction genres are fiction films with the theme of the imaginative
influence of science and technology on society and the world as a whole. The boundaries of
the sci-fi genre are never clearly stated, and can be subjective depending on the person who
judges. In short, the definition of sci-fi is a film genre that has a characteristic element of
imagination related to science or technological progress based on natural laws, laws of
biology, chemistry, physics and others. The hallmark of sci-fi films is usually set in a futuristic
or future time. Sometimes it can also be set about outer space and involve alien elements.
Sci-fi films also often focus on the discovery of new technologies such as robots, artificial
intelligence, monsters, time travel, mutants, space travel, and so on.
Generally, sci-fi movies don't stand alone. Usually the sci-fi genre is combined with the action,
thriller, drama, or even fantasy genres. Superhero films are also often categorized in the sci-
fi genre because of the use of fictional and imaginative technology in them. Science fiction
films reaffirm the central role of fantasy in popular films, even as they relate to reason,
science, and technology. J.P.Telotte. (2001). Several genres of science fiction include: (1)
Science fiction is a genre of fiction in which stories often tell about future science and
technology. (2) Science fiction texts are often set in the future, in outer space, in a different
world, or in a different universe or dimension. (3) Science fiction has a relationship with the
principles of science. These stories involve laws or partially true and partially fictitious links to

the fantasy genre. (4) The plot creates a different situation from today and the known past—
the characters will experience something new and unique. (5) Science fiction texts also
include a human element, explaining what effect new scientific discoveries, events, and
developments will have on mankind in the future. (6) Science fiction contains the usual novel
elements: specific setting, character development, plot (central conflict, complication,
climactic event, resolution), theme, and structure.
There are many examples of the best and most popular science fiction films, one of which is
Ready Player one, a 2018 American science fiction adventure film based on Ernest Cline's
novel of the same name. The film stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena
Waithe, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. Ernest Christy Cline is an American science
fiction novelist, slam poet, and screenwriter. He wrote the novels Ready Player One, Armada,
and Ready Player Two and co-wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of Ready Player
One, directed by Steven Spielberg. Cline was born and raised in Ashland, Ohio, the son of
Ernest Christy Cline and Faye Imogene (née Williams) Cline. As a young man in the 1970s and
1980s, Cline was "addicted to video games and movies," especially Star Wars, the John
Hughes films, and the tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons. He worked in
information technology in his twenties and wrote screenplays during his spare time.
A. Method
Being one of the selected research methods when going to research something,
descriptive research is a research method that seeks to describe the object or subject that is
studied in depth, broadly and in detail. This research method is used to solve and answer
problems by collecting data, classification, analysis, conclusions and reports
Presentation of data in descriptive research can be done using tables, graphs,
diagrams, pictograms, calculation of mode, median, mean, standard deviation and percentage
calculation. Usually descriptive research methods are often used in the health sector, this
research method is different from other methods which tend to focus more on discussing a
phenomenon that occurs
In this case we will try to use a descriptive approach. because it feels very suitable in
the READY PLAYER ONE film
B. Analysis
Steven Spielberg's sci-fi action adventure, Ready Player One, is set half in the real
world and half in virtual reality. Virtual Reality (Augmented Reality) Ready Player One paints
a somewhat pessimistic view of society's growing dependence on technology, but it also
illustrates the fantastic possibilities that VR and other futuristic technologies present. Ready
Player One depicts an immersive VR experience with no barriers, no physical boundaries
between the user and virtual objects and environments. Chen, S. A. (2018). With this
technology, people in the film world can create real experiences without the need to have a real
impact on the real world. But when seen in films, this technology makes everyone experience
a strong dependence and can no longer distinguish what is real or virtual. From the explanation
above, the following are the results of the analysis carried out on the Ready Player One story:
