ELECTROCARDIOGRAM

 The electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a noninvasive test that is used to

reflect underlying heart conditions by measuring the electrical activity of the
heart.
 EKG leads are attached to the body while the patient lies flat on a bed or
table. Leads are attached to each extremity (four total) and to six pre-defined
positions on the front of the chest
 A small amount of gel is applied to the skin, which allows the electrical
impulses of the heart to be more easily transmitted to the EKG leads.
 In some instances, men may require the shaving of a small amount of chest
hair to obtain optimal contact between the leads and the skin.

CARDIAC MONITOR
 Continuous cardiac monitoring is an important tool in the clinical assessment
of patients with a variety of conditions. It allows the detection of changes in
heart rate, rhythm and conduction, and is essential in the detection of life
threatening arrhythmias.

The monitor function includes:

 A display of heart rate and rhythm

 Sound alarms above or below pre-set limits
 The provision of rhythm strips to document evidence of arrythmia

DIFIBRILLATION
 Is a process in which an electronic device sends an electric shock to the heart
to stop an extremely rapid, irregular heartbeat, and restore the normal heart
rhythm.
 Position paddles
“Clear” the patient
Shock and then resume CPR for 5 cycles then re-analyze after each shock
Prepare drug therapy

 SAFETY AND CLEARING THE PATIENT

the defibrillator operator must always announce that a shock is about to be
delivered and make a visual check to make sure no one is in contact with the
patient.
the operator is responsible for clearing the patient and rescuers before each
shock is delivered.
the purpose of this warning is to ensure that no one has any contact with the
patient and that no oxygen is flowing across the patient's chest or openly
flowing across the electrode pads.
