Problem 2

To construct the deck of a bridge over a deep ravine, steel beams spaced at 2.5 m on
center, and simply supported on a span of 20 m are used to support the construction
loads amounting to 4200 Pa, which include the temporary formworks and other
construction live loads. At this initial stage, only the beams carry the loads. After the slab
hardened, sufficient shear connectors welded to the beam flange provide full composite
action of the steel with 0.15 m thick cast-in-place concrete slab.

Given:
Concrete, fc' = 24 MPa
Concrete Unit Weight = 24 kN/m
Steel, fy = 420 Mpa
Modular ratio, n = 8

For composite action, use an effective flange width of 1.75 m.

Steel Beam Properties:

Section = W 685 x 152
A = 19,355 mm tw = 13 mm
bf = 250 mm tf = 21 mm
d = 688 mm
Ix = 15 x 10 mm Iy = 0.58 x 10 mm

1. Determine the maximum bending stress (MPa) in the beam due to dead load which
include beam weight, slab, and wearing surface of 600 Pa, and the construction
loads.

2. Determine the maximum tensile stress in the beam due to standard truck load (H
load) alone, consisting of 15.2 kN front wheel load and 61.8 kN rear wheel load.
Axle distance is 4.27 m. Consider 24% impact on load.

3. Determine the maximum compressive stress (MPa) in the concrete slab.

An open thin-walled cylinder is filled with fluid, resulting to an internal pressure, p, and is
subjected to an axial force, F. The resulting tensile stresses are shown in the
corresponding Mohr's circle. The cylinder has a diameter of 500 mm and a thickness of 3
mm.

1. What is the axial force (N)?

2. If it is a closed cylinder with a gas causing internal pressure, what is the value of the
axial force (N)?

3. What is the value of the angle ϴ?

Problem 5
Sunday, 3 April 2022 3:58 pm

A T-beam resulted from monolithic construction of the beam and slab is

reinforced with 3-28 mm diameter top bars and 5-25 mm diameter bottom
bars. The effective flange width is 1200 mm, and the uniform slab thickness
is 110 mm. Width of beam is 300 mm, total depth of the T-section is 550 mm.
The centroid of the steel reinforcement is 70 mm from extreme concrete
fiber. Concrete strength, fc' = 21 MPa, steel strength fy = 420 MPa. Use NSCP
2015.

1. Calculate the nominal strength of the beam for positive moment

neglecting the contribution of the top reinforcement, in kN-m.

2. Calculate the design strength of the beam for negative moment, in kN-m.

3. Calculate the nominal shear strength (kN) that must be provided by the
stirrups if it is subjected to a factored shear of 250 kN.
