appropriate gift for the hostess. In Viet Nam, a gift of whisky is appropriate for the host, and some fruit
or small gifts for the hostess, children or elders of the home. Besides, gifts should never be wrapped in

Since water is the basis of life, composing the greater part of the tissues of all living things, the
crucial problem of desert animals is to survive in a world where sources of flowing water are rare. And
since man’s inexorable necessity is to absorb large quantities of water at frequent intervals, he can
scarcely comprehend that many creatures of the desert pass their entire lives without a single drop.
Uncompromising as it is, the desert has not eliminated life but only those forms unable to withstand
its desiccating effects. No moist- skinned, water-loving animals can exist there. Few large animals are
found. The giants of the North American desert are the deer, the coyote, and the bobcat. Since desert
country is open, it holds more swift-footed running and leaping creatures than the tangled forest. Its
population is largely nocturnal, silent, filled with reticence, and ruled by stealth. Yet they are not
emaciated. Having adapted to their austere environment, they are as healthy as animals anywhere else
in the word. The secret of their adjustment lies in the combination of behavior and physiology. None
could survive if, like mad dogs and Englishmen, they went out in the midday sun; many would die in a
matter of minutes. So most of them pass the burning hours asleep in cool, humid burrows underneath
the ground, emerging to hunt only by night. The surface of the sun-baked desert averages around 150
degrees, but 18 inches down the temperature is only 60 degrees.
Question 30. The author mentions all the following as examples of the behavior of desert animals

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of
the questions from 35 to 42.
In American, although most men still do less housework than their wives , that gap has been
halveds since the 1960s. Today, 41 per cent of couples say they share childcare equally, compared with
25 percent in 1985. Mẹn’s greater involvement at home is good for their relationships with their
spouses, and also good for their children. Hands-on fathers make better parents than men who let their
wives do all the nurturing and childcare. They raise sons who are more expressive and daughters who
are more likely to do well in school – especially in math and Science.
In 1900, life expectancy in the United States was 47 years, and only four per cent of the population
was 65 or older. Today, life expectancy is 76 years, and by 2025, it is estimated about 20 per cent of the
us, population will be 65 or older. For the first time, a generation of adults must pay for the needs of
both their parents and their children. Most Americans are responding with remarkable grace. One in
four households gives the equivalent of a full day a week or more in unpaid care to an aging relative,
and more than half say they expect to do so in the next 10 years. Older people are less likely to be
impoverished or incapacitated by illness than in the past, and have more opportunity to develop a
relationship with their grandchildren.
Even some of the choices that worry people the most are turning out to be manageable. Divorce
rates are likely to remain high, and in many cases marital breakdown causes serious problems for both
adults and kids. Yet when parents minimize conflict, family bonds can be maintained. And many
families are doing this. More non-custodial parents are staying in touch with their children. Child-
support receipts are rising. A lower proportion of children from divorced families are exhibitive
problems than in earlier decades. And stepfamilies are learning to maximize children’s access to
supportive adults rather than cutting them off from one side of the family.

People have defined ‘skyscraper’ in a number of ways over the years: an ornament on the top of a
building, a high-flying bird, a very tall man and a sail at the top of a mast. At the end of the nineteenth
century, the word was used to refer to buildings of ten storeys or more. Later, a lift was used to take
people up to the higher floors, as in the most famous skyscraper, the Empire State Building. During the
middle ages, the people living in the cities of northern Europe began to build great cathedrals. Tall
spires were added to make these churches higher and bring them closer to heaven.
In the nineteenth century, as cities grew more crowded with people looking for work, the value of
land rocketed.New businesses were starting and in order to make room for offices on a small plot of
land, it was necessary to build higher. But the problem was that to put up a stone building of such
height, the walls on the ground floor would have to be more than two metres thick to hold the weight of
the building. So another material was required to make skyscrapers possible.
About this time, three buildings were put up that used iron or steel to support great weight with
safety. They were the Crystal Palace in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Brooklyn Bridge in
New York. From then on, architects started to experiment with buildings that had steel frames and they
have made huge progress. Today, the tallest skyscrapers are a hundred storeys or more, compared to the
first ten storeys skyscrapers, which seem tiny.
Question 31: What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why skyscrapers were needed.
B. The most famous skyscrapers in the world today.
C. The people who designed skyscrapers.
D.Problems during construction of skyscrapers.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Nowadays, using credit card numbers online is deemed to be risky. However, from time to time, we
all use passwords and government ID numbers on the Internet. We think we are safe, but that may not
be true! A new kind of attack is being used by dishonest people to steal IDs and credit card numbers
from innocent web surfers. This new kind of attack is called “phishing.”
Phishing sounds the same as the word “fishing,” and it implies that a thief is trying to lure people into
giving away valuable information. Like real fishermen, phishers use bait in the form of great online
deals or services. For example, phishers might use fake emails and false websites to con people into
revealing credit card numbers, account usernames, and passwords. They imitate well-known banks,
online sellers, and credit card companies. Successful phishers may convince as many as five percent of
the people they contact to respond and give away their personal financial information.
Is this really a big problem? Actually, tricking five percent of the online merchants is huge!
Currently, more than 350 million people have access to the Internet, and seventy-five percent of those
Internet users live in the wealthiest countries on Earth. It has been estimated that phishers send more
than three billion scam messages each year. Even by tricking only five percent of the people, phishers
can make a lot of money.
Since there is so much money to make through this kind of scam, it has caught the interest of more
than just petty crooks. Recently, police tracked down members of an organized phishing group in
Eastern Europe, who had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from people online. The group created
official- looking email messages requesting people to update their personal information at an
international bank’s website. However, the link to the bank in the message actually sent people to the
phishers’ fake website.
How can innocent people protect themselves? Above all, they have to learn to recognize email that
has been sent by a phisher. Always be wary of any email with urgent requests for personal financial
information. Phishers typically write upsetting or exciting, but fake statements in their emails so that
people will reply right away. Also, messages from phishers will not address recipients by name because
they really don’t know who the recipients are yet. On the other hand, valid messages from your bank or
other companies you normally deal with will typically include your name.

D. To contrast phishers and hackers

correct answer to each of the questions from 30 to 34.
By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can considerably increase
their children’s language development. It is surprising, but true. How parents talk to their children
makes a big difference in the children’s language development. If a parent encourages the child to
actively respond to what the parent is reading, the child’s language skills increase. A study was done
with two or three-year-old children and their parents. Half of the thirty children participants were in the
experimental study; the other half acted as the control group.
In the experimental group, the parents were given a two-hour training session in which they were
taught to ask open-ended questions rather than yes-no questions. For example, the parent should ask,
“What is the doggy doing?” rather than, “Is the doggy running away?” Experimental parents were also
instructed how to expand on their children’s answer, how to suggest alternative possibilities, and how to
praise correct answers.
At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ on levels of language development, but at
the end of one month, the children in the experimental group were 5.5 months ahead of the control
group on a test of verbal expression and vocabulary . Nine months later, the children in the experimental
group still showed an advance of 6 months over the children in the control group.

ARE TRADITIONAL WAYS OF LEARNING THE BEST?
Read about some alternative schools of thought…
One school in Hampshire, UK, offers 24-hour teaching. The children can decide when or if they
come to school. The school is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., for 364 days a year and provides online
teaching throughout the night. The idea is that pupils don't have to come to school and they can decide
when they want to study. Cheryl Heron, the head teacher, said “Some students learn better at night.
Some students learn better in the morning.” Cheryl believes that if children are bored, they will not
come to school. “Why must teaching only be conducted in a classroom? You can teach a child without
him ever coming to school.”
Steiner schools encourage creativity and free thinking so children can study art, music and
gardening as well as science and history. They don’t have to learn to read and write at an early age. At
some Steiner schools the teachers can’t use textbooks. They talk to the children, who learn by listening.
Every morning the children have to go to special music and movement classes called “eurhythmy”,
which help them learn to concentrate. Very young children learn foreign languages through music and
song. Another difference from traditional schools is that at Steiner schools you don't have to do any tests
or exams.
A child learning music with the Suzuki method has to start as young as possible. Even two-year-old
children can learn to play difficult pieces of classical music, often on the violin. They do this by
watching and listening. They learn by copying, just like they learn their mother tongue. The child has to
join in, but doesn't have to get it right. “They soon learn that they mustn't stop every time they make a
mistake. They just carry on,” said one Suzuki trainer. The children have to practise for hours every day
and they give performances once a week, so they learn quickly. “The parents must be involved too,”
said the trainer, “or it just doesn't work.”
