3 DESIGN REPORT
3.1 Introduction
This DESIGN REPORT presents the structural investigative analysis and evaluation of the members of the
existing design of the three-legged self-supporting tower structure located in -. Actual site condition with
topographic factors was not considered in the original and existing design. In order to fully assess the
structural integrity of the existing structure, a structural evaluation was requested to make a detailed
structural re-analysis, review and recommendation as to the soundness, feasibility and structural stability
of the structure.
3.2 Scope of Work
The scope of work that is performed in order to present this INVESTIGATION REPORT is based on the general
scope of work required by DITO TELECOMMUNITY, as follows:
Structural Analysis and Design
Based on the outcome of the preliminary assessment to check the safety of the existing three-
legged self-supporting tower for the proposed antenna load, structural computations of the
existing structure to include effect of loadings from accessories and proposed attachments shall
be prepared.
3.3 Structure Description
3.3.1 Configuration and Profile
The existing three-legged self-supporting tower structure is basically mounted on individual reinforced
concrete pedestals. The structure has a nominal height of approximately 40 meters with its legs mounted
on reinforced concrete pedestals and has a tapering width of 6.95 m at the base to 2 m at the top and has
10-m vertical straight portion at the top. The structure has the following existing main member profile
configuration:

Base Plate
Base between bolts.
The structure configuration consists of predominantly x-bracing system for the entire tower. The self-
supporting tower structure is considered to be under Type 3 construction, on which the design is associated
with the member joint strength. The provisions of the NSCP, Vol. 1, National Structural Code of the
Philippines Vol. 1, 7th Edition, 2015are basically used in checking the stability of the structure members,
assessed to sustain the dead load, live load, wind and seismic forces as herein described. The investigative
analysis of the self-supporting tower structure is generated using the Open Tower software. It is used to
generate the 3D model, create all input specifications and all output reports and displays graphical
environment. These structural modelling and analysis input specifications are stored in a text file with
extension .MGB which can be analyzed and designed. The results can be viewed graphically. The MGB file
is processed by the Open Tower analysis to produce results that are stored in several files with extensions
such as OUT. The .OUT text file contains the printable output as created by the specifications. The other
files contain the results (node displacements, member / element forces, mode shapes, section forces,
section moments and section displacements, etc.).
The provisions of Section 207 of the NSCP, Vol. 1, National Structural Code of the Philippines Vol. 1, 7th
Edition, 2015(adapted from the 15thEdition of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), 2016) are
basically used in checking the stability of the tower members, designed to sustain the wind velocity and
antenna attachments as herein described. A member marked “OK” signifies compliance with the AISC
combined stress criteria. Design stress results are shown as a tabulation of “MEMBER END FORCES/CHECK
CODE MEMBERS,” which are then used to check the design the members of the self-supporting tower
structure.
The self-supporting tower structure shall be analyzed having a basic wind speed of 350 kph with Exposure
C consideration. The coefficients used in the structural computation were taken from NSCP, Vol. I, Section
207, National Structural Code of the Philippines Vol. 1, 7th Edition, 2015.
In the structural investigation analysis, the members of the self-supporting tower are assumed to have
minimum specified yield strength as indicated in Section 2.3 of this report.
This report provides the detailed structural re-analysis of the existing tower for the current and additional
antenna loadings following DITO TELECOMMUNITY’s technical design requirements, governing
specifications, codes and standards. At the latter part of the report, conclusion and recommendation are
presented to guide DITO TELECOMMUNITY and its respective end users for whatever purpose this
document may serve.
Results of the analysis and design are summarized in the following pages of this report.
3.3.2 Structure Analysis
Generally, the structural modelling shall be analyzed based on the principle of
load resistance factor design (LRFD) concept. However, in this report, the load resistance factor design
(LRFD) conditions will be limited to strength and displacement requirements.
Methodology. A comprehensive load resistance factor design (LRFD) design approach will be used. Factored
load combinations will consider cases where continuously acting loads are both disadvantageous and
advantageous, with load factors adjusted as appropriate.
Where appropriate, the following computer program may be employed:
Open Tower - Two-dimensional / three-dimensional finite element analysis.
Design+ – General Engineering Assistance and Reference software for routine design work.
Customized spreadsheet programs developed by the designer in conformity with the requirements
of the applicable code.
The analysis of the structure will follow standard rational code procedures.
The existing self-supporting tower structure shall be analyzed as a three-dimensional space frame subjected
to both gravity loads and primarily for horizontal loads in accordance with the applicable code of practice.
The general method used to analyze this self-supporting tower structure is based on structural program
module in structural analysis known as Open Tower Program. The program implores a computerized three-
dimensional direct element stiffness matrix method.
With this program module, the self-supporting tower structure is analyzed as a three-dimensional space
subjected to wind and seismic loads, antenna loads (existing and proposed) and self-weight of the structure.
Various Open Tower outputs can be retrieved on a completed analyzed structure. However, outputs are
limited to the most critical load variations and structural code-checking such as the AISC code-checking,
member end forces, type of material used, joint coordinates, member incidences, member - critical
condition and graphical print output.
3.3.3 Structural System
The structure is made of structural steel space frame composed of PIPE LEG AND MAIN DIAGONAL, AND
ANGULAR HORIZONTAL, LATERAL AND SECONDARY BRACES. The vertical configuration of the structure is
a three-legged self-supporting tower, the whole structure being mounted on the reinforced concrete
pedestals.
3.3.4 Analysis and Assumptions Made
A comprehensive design approach will be used. Factored load combinations will consider cases where
continuously acting loads are both disadvantageous and advantageous, with load factors adjusted as
appropriate. However, for structural steel system, alternate stress design method will be employed where
unfactored load combinations will be considered at service stage.
The analysis and evaluation of structure and its components will follow standard rational code procedures.
In the structural investigative analysis and evaluation of the existing self-supporting tower members are
assumed to have minimum yield strength as stated in the material specifications – Section 2.3 of this report.
