The discord server is organized into channels which are places for people to talk
about different topics
Welcome Section
Channels:
1. #rules
The first channel is “rules”, which explains the rules for the StudyStream server, read
these to gain an understanding of how the server works.
3. #mindfulness-session
Next is the “announcements” channel where the admins give updates about
changes within the server.
5. #get-roles
Next is the “get-roles” channel, through which you can join more channels
depending on your interests as well as receive reminders. There are currently
four different roles you can subscribe to:
d. Opt-in channels – Once you click the emote button you have access
to majors channels such as biology and others, which is a place for
students to discuss their fields of study.
6. #mindfulness-chat
1. #general-chat
The first channel in this section is the “general-chat”. This is a place where students
can interact with each other about any topic. One thing to note is that this channel
is English- only.
2. #introductions
Next is the “introductions” channel, this is a place for you to tell us about
yourself and what brought you to SttudyStream. Do not reply to messages or
have conversations in this chat. Introductions are limited to only one
submission.
4. #wellness-and-mental-health
The “study-buddy-chat” channel is a place for you and your study buddy to
talk in a public environment.
Channels:
1. #find-a-studybuddy
This channel is for you to find a study buddy to stay accountable for your work.
The following format should be used for the post:
You can find a study buddy with the same major or subject of interest as you
by pressing ctrl+F for Windows and cmd+F for Macs and searching for a
keyword, for example “Business”. See the pinned messages in this channel for
more information on this.
3. # my-checklist
This channel is a place for individuals to post their to-do lists publicly, as a
way to stay accountable for their work.
18
4. #completed
This channel is for individuals to post the tasks they have completed.
When using this channel you can use the “-m” command to check your own
personal studying statistics such as how long you have been studying and how
you compare to other users.
To time your studying progress on discord enter ”-p” and it will show you your
role within the server, this is based on the number of hours you spent studying in
the focus rooms and study pods. The more time you spend in the focus channels
and study pods the higher your role will be.
Channels:
1. #summer-school
In this channel individuals can chat about anything summer-school related, such
as their summer courses.
2. #personal-projects
This is a place for students to share any projects they are working on, both
academic and non-academic.
The next section is “university majors” which only shows if you opt-in to it by
pressing the corresponding emote in the “get-roles” channel. Once you do so,
you will see channels for various majors.
Channels:
1. #study-chat
This channel is to chat with others from the focus channels, use this space instead
of trying to communicate through video. For example, you can use this channel to
thank someone for their company during a study session.
The focus channels are similar to the zoom rooms where you can study with
other people with or without video. One key difference between the zoom
rooms is that the discord focus channels are capped at 10, 15, or 25 individuals
depending on the room. The capacity is shown to the left of the focus channel
name, as well as how many individuals are currently in the room. For example,
the below focus room has a capacity of 10 and there are currently 8 people
studying there.
Channels:
1. #studypod-rules
Read this channel before joining a study pod to get a better understanding of how
they work and to familiarize yourself with the rules.
2. #studypod-chat
This is a place where music is played 24/7 and you can choose from different
genres such as Lofi, Jazz, or Classical to play while you study.
The idea of this section is that when you are idle in a Focus Channel or Study Pod, a
moderator can move you to the AFK section, which is the inactive channel. If you
are moved here, you still have the ability to move back to your original voice
channel.
To send a message to a user click on their avatar and type a message in the
message field at the bottom of the pop-up.
Alternatively, you can message individuals from the home tab on discord and
search users by their username. To do this, you first need to add the individual as a
friend.
